The use of sera containing antibodies to tissue-specific antigens of highly specialized organs (skeletal muscles, heart, skin, excretory glands) enabled us to detect, by immunofluorescence, cells capable of synthesizing analogous antigens (i.e. hetero-organic thymus antigens) in human and animal thymus. Detection of hetero-organic antigens in the thymus is the basis for the hypothesis that natural immunological tolerance to tissue self antigens is formed within the thymus in the course of T-lymphocyte maturation, with thymus antigens taking part in the process.

In 22 cases of myxedema 22 HLA-A and B antigens were typed. In six out of eight patients with a history of subacute thyroiditis Bw35 antigen was demonstrated, while in none of 14 patients free from this disease in anamnesis could this antigen be found. This difference is statistically significant, and suggests classifying of myxedema patients into two groups according to pathogenesis of the disease.

We have studied the antigen frequencies in a group of adult patients with acute and chronic iridocyclitis and chronic, cyclitis. In patients with iridocyclitis a statistically significant increased incidence of HLA-B27 was noted, even in those patients without joint or systemic disease. Patients with chronic iridocyclitis also were noted to have an increased incidence of B27; however, those patients with chronic cyclitis did not. On the basis of HLA-B27 studies there appears to be a fundamental difference between adult and juvenile iridocyclitis.

Most studies on immunologic responses to Onchocerca volvulus have employed extracts or antigens from related filarial parasites. 106 patients diagnosed as having brucellosis were typed for HLA class I and class II antigens. The number of healthy controls was 272 and 102 for classes I and II, respectively. 17 HLA-A, 31 HLA-B, 7 HLA-C and 8 HLA-DR specificities were studied. The most important finding was a highly significant decrease of the HLA-Cw2 antigen frequency in the patient group compared with the controls. The corrected p value was p less than 0.0001 (Fisher's test). This finding is compatible with the idea that HLA-Cw2 antigen could be a protective factor. The immunologic specificity of bullous pemphigoid (BP) antigens expressed in human skin was studied by reacting the sera of 34 patients with BP with several specimens of normal skin. Most sera with basement membrane zone (BMZ) antibodies reacted to antigens expressed in all specimens of skin examined. HLA antigens are associated with a number of inflammatory eye diseases, most notably HLA B2 with anterior uveitis (AU). This association varies between different populations and ethnic groups. The HLA antigens were identified in sixty-five patients with sarcoidosis, comprising forty-five with uveitis, twelve with erythema nodosum and eight with arthritis. In the group with arthritis, B8 was present in seven of eight (P = 0-0016) and the haplotype 1,8 in five of eight (P = 0-0053). A1 was present in 44% with uveitis (P = 0-04). There was no other significant disturbance of antigen frequencies in uveitis or in erythema nodosum, but it was noteworthy that B27 was present in only two patients with uveitis.
