Spectrum of Coronary Artery Aneurysms: From the Radiologic Pathology Archives.

Advances in medical diagnosis reveal that coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs) may develop in several clinical scenarios and manifest variable symptoms, imaging appearances, and outcomes. Aneurysms are pathologically classified into three groups: atherosclerotic, inflammatory, and noninflammatory. The last category is associated with congenital, inherited, and connective tissue disorders. Overlap exists among the groups, because secondary atherosclerotic change may be present in an aneurysm of any cause. Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of CAAs in adults, and inflammation is considered the

"And then, nothing": Alzheimer's archives and the good (enough) death.

This paper focuses on the author's mother, a subject whose ageing process was speeded and whose morality was challenged by the myriad and unpredictable effects of Alzheimer's disease. Using an archive of recorded conversations, the paper examines some of the existential questions with which the mother grappled until she lost the ability to speak. It considers these late ethical expressions in the context of her earlier political activism, marks her brief obsession with the possibility of assisted dying, and concludes by assessing the relative "goodness" of her very recent death in some of the

Testicular Seminoma and Its Mimics: From the Radiologic Pathology Archives.

Testicular seminoma is the most common malignant tumor of the testis. It classically manifests as a painless mass. Radiologic evaluation with high-frequency ultrasonography (US) is critical for diagnosis. Seminomas are usually homogeneously hypoechoic masses at US. In challenging cases, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging may help confirm that a mass is intratesticular and provide data for local staging. Computed tomography (CT) provides valuable information for staging, including the presence and size of retroperitoneal lymph nodes. Testicular seminoma is treated with radical inguinal orchiectomy

Lichenoid dysplasia revisited - evidence from a review of Indian archives.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To report on the prevalence of 'lichenoid dysplasia' (LD) in oral mucosal biopsies previously reported as oral lichen planus (OLP), oral lichenoid lesion (OLL) and oral epithelial dysplasia (OED). Based on this case series, to postulate whether features of dysplasia are present in biopsies with a diagnosis of OLP or OLL and vice versa that warrant a separate diagnostic entity of 'lichenoid dysplasia'. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective, multicentre study was carried out by retrieving archival slides of cases diagnosed with OLP, OLL and OED. Diagnostic criteria for th

From the radiologic pathology archives: cardiac lymphoma: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Lymphoma of the heart and pericardium is usually present as one aspect of disseminated disease and rarely occurs as a primary malignancy. It accounts for 1.3% of primary cardiac tumors and 0.5% of extranodal lymphomas. Cardiac lymphomas are most commonly diffuse large cell lymphomas and frequently manifest as an ill-defined, infiltrative mass. Atrial location is typical; the right atrium is most often affected. Pericardial thickening or effusion is often a common early feature of disease. Infiltration of atrial or ventricular walls with extension along epicardial surfaces is also a notable fea

From the radiologic pathology archives: precocious puberty: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Precocious puberty represents a unique diagnostic problem in which imaging plays an important role. Development of secondary sex characteristics may result from inappropriate activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis with release of gonadotropin, or from gonadotropin-independent secretion of sex steroids by the adrenal glands or gonads. A variety of lesions can manifest with precocious puberty, including various central nervous system (CNS) lesions, adrenal lesions, and sex cord-stromal tumors of the testis or ovary. CNS lesions causing precocious puberty are much more common in boys than

The use of convent archival records in medical research: the School Sisters of Notre Dame archives and the nun study.

The School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) archives program in a cooperative system for the arrangement and preservation of the records of the SSND provinces in North America, including records of individual sisters. Archival records include autobiographies, school and college transcripts, employment histories, and family socioeconomic data. The Nun Study, a longitudinal study of Alzheimer's disease and aging in 678 SSND sisters, compares data extracted from these records with data on late-life cognitive and physical function and postmortem brain neuropathology to explore early life factor that m…

Aniline Biosynthesis and the Archival of EC 4.1.1.24.

Aniline is an essential synthetic building block, with its manufacture reliant on fossil carbon feedstocks. While bioproduction could connect aniline manufacture to renewable carbon inputs, efficient metabolic pathway design remains a hurdle for aniline biosynthesis. Two alternate pathways were examined, involving the promiscuous activity of either non-oxidative phenolic acid decarboxylases or tyrosine phenol-lyases (TPLs) on an amine substrate. The decarboxylases exhibited <1% aniline yields under oxygen-scarce conditions, whereas no candidate TPLs produced aniline. Further optimization of th

A Living Archive of High-risk Lymphoma.

In this issue of Blood Cancer Discovery, Yang and colleagues present a comprehensive repository of patient-derived xenograft models of aggressive large B-cell lymphoma. The publicly available resource links disease specimens from individuals treated with diverse modern therapies (including chimeric antigen receptor T cells) to their high-risk clinical treatment histories and the molecular and transcriptional characteristics of their tumors, enabling the study of tumor cell-intrinsic mechanisms of therapeutic resistance and susceptibility to novel therapies. See related article by Yang et al.,

Queer tattooing: archives of spatial belonging, bodily autonomy, resistance and community.

This article examines queer tattooing as both a historical and a contemporary practice of resistance, belonging and community formation. Bringing together three archives - oral history interviews and portraits of queer elders, historical medical records documenting tattooed queer women engaged in sex work at the turn of the twentieth century and a dialogue with queer tattoo artist Sara Swanson - we consider what queer tattooing reveals across generations, bodies and spaces. Our interdisciplinary approach combines archival research, oral history, artistic practice and activist perspectives to t…

From the radiologic pathology archives: gastrointestinal lymphoma: radiologic and pathologic findings.

Gastrointestinal (GI) lymphoma encompasses a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that have a common lymphoid origin but variable pathologic and imaging features. Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (ENMZL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) are the most common. ENMZL usually occurs in the stomach, where it is associated with chronic infection by Helicobacter pylori, and is typically a superficial spreading lesion that causes mucosal nodularity or ulceration and mild wall thickening. DLBCL may arise de novo or from transformation of ENMZL or other low-grade lymphomas. This form of lymp

From the radiologic pathology archives imaging of osteonecrosis: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Osteonecrosis is common and represents loss of blood supply to a region of bone. Common sites affected include the femoral head, humeral head, knee, femoral/tibial metadiaphysis, scaphoid, lunate, and talus. Symptomatic femoral head osteonecrosis accounts for 10,000-20,000 new cases annually in the United States. In contradistinction, metadiaphyseal osteonecrosis is often occult and asymptomatic. There are numerous causes of osteonecrosis most commonly related to trauma, corticosteroids, and idiopathic. Imaging of osteonecrosis is frequently diagnostic with a serpentine rim of sclerosis on rad

Langenbeck's Archives and the early development of vascular surgery in Germany.

Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery and its predecessor Archiv für Klinische Chirurgie have addressed vascular surgical problems from the early beginning. In 1860, Bernhard von Langenbeck published a review on venous injuries during tumor surgery, and in 1907, Erich Lexer heralded the era of vascular reconstructive therapy in Germany when he treated an axillary aneurysm by use of a segment of the longer saphenous vein. The Archiv für Klinische Chirurgie has significantly promoted the development of vascular surgery in Germany especially at the end of the nineteenth and first decades of the twenti…

Rise and spread of lead-silver metallurgy deciphered from peatland archives.

How mining has shaped long-term economic and political landscapes across Europe and the Mediterranean remains poorly understood, largely because archaeological evidence is spatially fragmented and ore sources are difficult to trace from atmospheric lead (Pb) records. Here, we compile Pb isotope data from environmental archives and introduce the Environmental Match Intensity Index (EMII), a metric applied to peat records to track Pb-silver (Ag) ore-supply patterns and relative changes in the integrated mining-related atmospheric Pb signal over six millennia. EMII reveals an early mining signal …

Validation and Optimization of Multi-Organ Segmentation on Clinical Imaging Archives.

Segmentation of abdominal computed tomography (CT) provides spatial context, morphological properties, and a framework for tissue-specific radiomics to guide quantitative Radiological assessment. A 2015 MICCAI challenge spurred substantial innovation in multi-organ abdominal CT segmentation with both traditional and deep learning methods. Recent innovations in deep methods have driven performance toward levels for which clinical translation is appealing. However, continued cross-validation on open datasets presents the risk of indirect knowledge contamination and could result in circular reaso

Mesenchymal Extratesticular Tumors and Tumorlike Conditions: From the Radiologic Pathology Archives.

Both benign and malignant tumors and tumorlike conditions can arise from the nonepididymal extratesticular tissues. Benign tumors are far more common than malignant tumors, with lipoma being the most common lesion found at this site. Several imaging features can help narrow the differential diagnosis of these lesions, including the presence of fat and imaging features suggestive of fibrous tissue. Lesions that contain fat represent lipoma, liposarcoma, or angiomyofibroblastoma (AMF)-like tumor. If enhancing soft tissue is present in conjunction with fat, the differential diagnosis narrows furt

From the archives of the AFIP: musculoskeletal fibromatoses: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Musculoskeletal fibromatoses represent a wide spectrum of fibroblastic and myofibroblastic neoplasms with similar pathologic appearances and variable clinical behavior. These lesions can be categorized by location (superficial or deep) or by the age group predominantly affected. Superficial fibromatoses in adults (palmar and plantar) and children (calcifying aponeurotic fibroma, lipofibromatosis, and inclusion body fibromatosis) are often small slow-growing lesions; their diagnosis is suggested by location. Deep fibromatoses in adults (desmoid type and abdominal wall) and children (fibromatosi
