Ascorbic acid deficiency and hepatic UDP-glucuronyltransferase.

The effect of dietary ascorbic acid on hepatic microsomal UDP-glucuronyltransferase (UDPGT) activity towards p-aminophenol, bilirubin, and acetaminophen was investigated. Ascorbate deficiency produced a 33% reduction in the specific activity of UDPGT towards p-aminophenol, whereas there was no difference between microsomes from ascorbate-deficient and supplemented guinea pigs in the activity towards bilirubin and acetaminophen. This suggests that the effect of the vitamin is on a specific isozyme. This reduction was correlated with the reduced quantity of hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450, w

Ascorbic acid deficiency in bariatric surgical population.

BACKGROUND: To determine the prevalence of ascorbic acid deficiency in the surgical population, whether the body mass index (BMI) has an effect on ascorbic acid concentrations; and whether an association exists between ascorbic acid deficiency and adverse surgical outcomes. METHODS: Preoperative plasma ascorbic acid concentrations were prospectively assessed in 20-60-year-old patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery. Ascorbic acid deficiency was defined as any concentration < or =0.3 mg/dL and depletion as any concentration >0.3-0.59 mg/dL. RESULTS: Of the 266 patients evaluated, 167 h…

Ascorbic acid deficiency in cultured human fibroblasts.

Fibroblasts grown in medium containing less than 1 microg of ascorbic acid per milliliter showed evidence of ascorbic acid deficiency when compared with cells grown in medium containing 50 microg of ascorbic acid per milliliter. This was manifested morphologically by dilated endoplasmic reticulum, a decrease in number, size, and intensity of staining of the mitochondria, by defective intercellular fibril formation, and by easy disaggregation of the cells from the intercellular matrix after treatment with pronase. When 50 microg per milliliter of ascorbic acid was incorporated into the medium, …

Ascorbic acid deficiency in patients with lichen planus.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have highlighted the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of lichen planus (LP). In the present study, the interest of the authors is focused on the investigation of ascorbic acid status in patients with LP and identification of parameters that might influence the level of this vitamin. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We analyzed the level of urinary ascorbic acid (reflectometric method) in 77 patients with LP (cutaneous LP (CLP)-49 cases; oral LP (OLP)-28 cases) and 50 control subjects. The evaluation of all participants included clinical examination and laboratory an

Ascorbic acid deficiency and the flavin-containing monooxygenase.

Activity of the flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO) was reduced significantly in ascorbic acid deficient guinea pigs. Reduction in oxidati … fect on the activity of the FMO. The toxicological implications of the reduction in FMO activity in ascorbic acid deficiency are discussed.
