[The battle against smallpox in Austria].

In Austria activities against smallpox started with variolation, the artificial infection with the smallpox virus, which bore the risk of contracting the disease. In 1800, Lower Austria was the first country in continental Europe to implement Edward Jenner's invention of vaccination with cowpox for mass vaccination. In the beginning vaccination was practised by inoculation from one human being to another. In this paper development of smallpox vaccination from the beginning to it's cessation in 1981 is described.

Surveillance of Legionnaires' disease in Austria.

Seven foreign cases of travel-associated Legionnaires' disease were associated with two neighbouring tourist villages in Austria between 1992 and 2004. The seven foreigners stayed in four hotels located in a geographical diameter of less than 10 km. Two cases were diagnosed in The Netherlands and five in the UK. The first case occurred in 1992, while the remaining cases clustered between August 2000 and April 2004. None of these cases was reported officially as part of a hotel-associated cluster, thereby highlighting several weaknesses of the infectious disease control systems involved.

A case of visceral leishmaniasis in Austria.

We report a patient aged 41 years with fever of unknown origin. Notable aspects of his travel history were a trip to the Philippines and a sailing trip around Sicily. The patient presented with fever up to 40 degrees C since 4 weeks, weakness, headache, hepatosplenomegaly and night sweat. No specific cause could be found. Based on clinical findings tuberculosis was suspected and empirical tuberculostatic treatment was started. However, during the following 6 weeks the patient's condition deteriorated. A bone marrow biopsy performed to exclude a haematological malignancy revealed Leishmania sp.

The incidence of stairway injuries in Austria.

Stairs are among the most hazardous features of the everyday environment, yet stairway falls have received little research attention. A stratified random sample of Austrian residents was surveyed in person in 1989. Of over 55,000 respondents, 147 reported a stairway injury in the previous year that limited activity for at least one day. Thirty-seven percent of these injuries resulted in hospitalization. Extrapolating to the entire country of 8 million people, each year some 20,000 Austrians sustain serious stairway injuries resulting in over 7,500 hospitalizations. The incidence of stairway in…

Epidemiology of borrelia infections in Austria.

From April 1984 to July 1985 873 cases of Borrelia infections were registered at the Hygiene Institute of the University of Vienna. 2609 ser … s showed serologic reactivity. Geographically, Borrelia infections are distributed in all states of Austria. The seasonal distribution of cases show a peak in July and August, but the onset of clinical manifestation could be observed throughout the year. These results present Austria as an area where tick- or insect-borne Borrelia infections are very freq …

Salmonellosis in Austria: situation and trends.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella spp. are a major cause of human gastroenteritis in many parts of the world. Most of these infections are zoonotic and are transmitted from healthy carrier animals to humans through contaminated food. In Austria we are facing an ongoing salmonellosis epidemic that started in 1989. The main cause of the epidemic is a massive increase of infections due to S. enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis), a serotype prevalent in poultry, particularly in eggs. The introduction of vaccination of laying hens and broilers, together with intensified outbreak inv…

Campylobacteriosis in Austria: situation and trends.

Campylobacter species are among the most commonly identified causative agents of acute bacterial gastroenteritis in humans worldwide. In Austria, campylobacteriosis has been a notifiable disease since 1996 and its incidence has increased continuously over the past years. Improvement of notification has led to an important increase in knowledge of the epidemiology of this disease in Austria. In addition to existing programs monitoring food safety, implementation of a national surveillance program to monitor antimicrobial resistance and the prevalence of campylobacter in food animals allows cont…

[History of recommendations for immunizations in Austria].

Public immunizations against small-pox were first conducted in Austria over 200 years ago on December 10th 1800. The first legal regulation concerning small-pox vaccination was issued in 1836. Official recommendations for childhood vaccinations were first published in 1973 in conjunction with the Austrian anticipatory health care program for children. Since 1984 the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Federal Advisory Committee on Health publishes and updates recommendations for immunizations for all age groups at intervals dictated by epidemic necessities and availability of vaccines.

A short history of neurosciences in Austria.

Based on internal medicine and psychiatry and in close connection with pathology, the neurosciences in Austria began to develop in the 18(th) century, e.g. with the description of inflammation of the central nervous system by J. P. Franck (1745-1823) and the "phrenology" by F. J. Gall (1745-1823). Under the influence of the great pathologist C. Rokitansky (1804-1878), the tripode of the Vienna neurology - L. Türck (1810-1868), as initiator, Th. v. Meynert (1833-1892) the activator, and H. Obersteiner (1847-1922) as the founder of the Vienna Neurological Institute, presented basic contributions…

[Iodine supply and struma in Austria].

Austria is an iodine deficient area as are most parts of Europe. Goiters were always a natural phenomenon. In 1924 goiter prevalence in school children was 45 to 47% and a first attempt was made with iodized salt. This iodized salt (5 mg NaI/kg salt) was not used widely and goiter prevalence remained unchanged for decades. Therefore, in 1963, salt iodized with 10 mg KI/kg was introduced by law in a semi-mandatory way: Non-iodized salt was allowed to be sold only by special request. Consequently, in 1982, 68% of the total salt sold was iodized salt, goiter prevalence dropped to 1.5% in first gr…

[Epidemiology of meningococcal meningitis in Austria].

In Austria the report of epidemic meningitis is obligatory. Similar to other countries most of the observed strains of meningococci belong to the serogroups A, B and C. The morbidity is decreasing at present, the last peak occurred in the years 1966 to 1971. While several epidemics occurred in other parts of the world during the last years, only 1.2 cases in 100,000 persons were registered in Austria at that time, indicating an epidemiologic wave trough. During the observation period of 20 years the case fatality rate remained relatively constant at 8.6%. In comparison with other infectious di…

[Primary ciliary dyskinesia (Pcd) in Austria].

INTRODUCTION: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare hereditary recessive disease with symptoms of recurrent pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, and chronic sinusitis. Chronic rhinitis is often the presenting symptom in newborns and infants. Approximately half of the patients show visceral mirror image arrangements (situs inversus). In this study, we aimed 1) to determine the number of paediatric PCD patients in Austria, 2) to show the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities used in the clinical centres and 3) to describe symptoms of children with PCD. PATIENTS, MATERIAL AND METH…

[Human fascioliasis in Austria (author's transl)].

Two cases of human fascioliasis in Austria (a 3-year-old boy and a 4-year-ond girl) are reported. A description is given of the clinical picture and the diagnostic procedures employed in the two cases. The importance of the serodiagnosis of fascioliasis is demonstrated, especially in the case of liver flukes; 4 different serological tests, partly of high sensitivity, were performed. After unsuccessful therapy with Resochin both children were treated with dehydroemetine; after a 4-week interval during which no eggs of Fasciola were found in several stool samples from either child, ova were yet …

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis in Austria: epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory findings in five consecutive patients from Tyrol, Austria.

We report five consecutive cases of Anaplasma (A.) phagocytophilum infection (the causative agent of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA)) from western Austria. All infections were acquired between June and August in 2003 and 2004 in the Inn valley (Tyrol, Austria). Four patients required hospitalisation, one patient was treated as an outpatient. During the acute stage of illness, laboratory findings included thrombocytopenia (5/5), elevated C-reactive protein (5/5), elevated neopterin (5/5), elevated lactate dehydrogenase (4/5), and elevation of liver enzymes (4/5). Leukopenia (3/5) and elev…

First description of Hyalomma rufipes in Austria.

This investigation highlights the first detection of Hyalomma rufipes in Austria (district of Lienz, East Tyrol). The tick was discovered on a horse, and it was subjected to a thorough morphological and genetic analysis to ascertain its precise species and the presence of any pathogens. Molecular analysis revealed the presence of Rickettsia aeschlimannii DNA. The identification of Hy. rufipes and R. aeschlimanii was validated through sequence analysis, specifically the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene of mitochondrial DNA and the outer membrane protein A gene, respectively. Our findings ind…
