The Effect of Aversive Therapy Using Virtual Reality on Craving, Depression, and Self-Efficacy: A Pilot Study in Patients Under Methadone Maintenance Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual reality-based aversion therapy in reducing craving, alleviating depression, and improving self-efficacy in patients with substance use disorders undergoing methadone maintenance therapy. METHODS: The research was conducted as an interventional clinical trial involving 90 participants aged 25 to 55 years from outpatient treatment centers. The participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a group that received virtual reality-based aversion therapy combined with methadone, a group that received psychological couns

The Effects of the Flash Technique Compared to Those of an Abbreviated Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy Protocol on the Emotionality and Vividness of Aversive Memories.

Introduction: The Flash technique is a novel intervention aimed at rapidly decreasing the subjective disturbance of an aversive memory, thereby serving as a potential way of treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The protocol is used to stimulate clients to engage in positive imagery while being discouraged to actively recollect the targeted disturbing memory. Previous research into the Flash technique's efficacy shows promising results, yet controlled studies are lacking. Objectives: To test the efficacy of the Flash technique, it was compared to an abbreviated eye movement desensiti

Evaluation of electrical aversion therapy for inappropriate sexual behaviour after traumatic brain injury: a single case experimental design study.

Inappropriate sexual behaviour after acquired brain injury is a severe complication. Evidence for effective treatment is not available. Electrical aversion therapy (EAT) is a behavioural therapeutic option used in persons with intellectual disabilities, which might be suitable for brain-injured individuals for whom other therapies are not effective. The effect of EAT in brain injury has not been investigated previously. A single case experimental design was used. In an ABBA (baseline-treatment-treatment-withdrawal) design the frequency of the target behaviour (ie, inappropriate sexual behaviou

Elimination of thumb-sucking as a treatment for severe trichotillomania.

A 5-year-old girl presented with a 3-year history of severe trichotillomania and alopecia. The trichotillomania was observed to covary, or occur only in the presence of thumb-sucking. Thus, the elimination of thumb-sucking was targeted as a treatment for trichotillomania. The investigation evaluated the relative effectiveness of a standard aversive taste treatment, a response-dependent alarm and a response-disrupting thumb-post. Results indicated that only the thumb-post completely eliminated thumb-sucking and the covarying trichotillomania. These results suggest that when trichotillomania is

Child sexual abuse. 3: Treatment and recidivism in paedophiles.

Although various courses of treatment for paedophilia have been tried, there is little evidence of their effectiveness. Important factors that mitigate against success are the inability of paedophiles to see their sexual activity as warranting treatment and their reluctance to change their behaviour.

The use of pharmacologic pain sensitization in the treatment of repetitive hair-pulling.

A significant problem for many individuals who engage in repetitive hair-pulling is the fact that they experience no discomfort associated with their behavior, and can thus carry on with hair-pulling outside of conscious awareness. The present case study was an attempt to address this problem through the use of a commercially available topical cream which enhances pain sensitivity. A 38-yr-old female applied the cream daily to two affected areas on her scalp. The increased pain sensitization, in conjunction with the habit reversal technique, resulted in markedly decreased hair-pulling.

Effect size estimates in chemical aversion treatments of alcoholism.

This study found that aggregate studies on alcohol aversion therapy tended to support a moderate level of treatment impact that may have noteworthy practical import. Emetics appear to generate fairly consistent findings; a paralysis-inducing chemical may produce variable results.

Chemical aversion treatment of alcohol dependence.

Developments in the application of chemical aversion therapy to the treatment of alcohol dependence are discussed. Historical factors leading to the early use of chemical aversion therapies are delineated and the theoretical underpinnings of chemical aversion interventions are evaluated. Ethical and procedural considerations are addressed and an assessment of the efficacy of the therapy is attempted. Future research activities that would lead to refinement of chemical aversion therapy protocols are highlighted. The effectiveness of chemical aversion treatment of alcohol dependence is discussed

Chemical aversion conditioning in the treatment of alcoholism: further comments.

The literature on consummatory aversion (CA) conditioning in rats does provide a well-developed theoretical foundation for chemical aversion conditioning. Nevertheless, differences between rats and humans in CA learning suggest caution in extrapolating from the animal laboratory to the treatment of alcoholic patients. Serious methodological problems with studies of emetic therapy with alcoholics preclude unambiguous evaluation of its effects. Emetic therapy is an intrusive and relatively costly form of treatment which has not been shown to be more effective than alternative, less costly method

Chemical aversion treatment of alcohol dependence. II. Future research directions for the '90s.

Chemical aversion treatment is one of the most promising modalities currently available for treatment of alcohol dependence. This review highlights potentially fruitful areas for future investigational efforts and poses a number of specific empirical questions. Investigation of issues delineated in this report would advance understanding of pharmacological aversion therapy vis-à-vis utility and mechanisms of action.

Chemical aversion treatment of alcohol dependence. I. Validity of current criticisms.

Current criticisms of chemical aversion therapy are delineated and their validity assessed. Data pertaining to the effectiveness, acceptability, intrusiveness, availability of alternative treatments, cost-effectiveness, and theoretical foundations of chemical aversion therapy are examined. It is concluded that available evidence supports the efficacy of chemical aversion therapy with respect to production of conditioned aversion to alcohol and treatment outcome.

The sexual aversion syndrome.

Sexual aversion is a widespread, poorly recognized syndrome occurring in both males and females. Once diagnosed, it is relatively resistant to conventional forms of therapy. Aversion is characterized by an unwillingness to get involved in sexual activity, with avoidance of any touching or communication that might lead to sexual involvement. This syndrome usually presents as a lack of libido, low sex drive, inhibited sexual desire or arousal dysfunction. Aversion may be seen along with other sexual dysfunctions, as a precipitating cause or as a consequence. However, aversion can also be the onl
