Physical violence and injuries in intimate relationships--New York, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 1994.

Women are more likely than men to sustain injuries and to require medical attention as a result of physical violence in an intimate relationship. To determine the prevalence of physically violent acts by intimate partners, injuries, and the use of medical services for injuries sustained from intimate partner physical violence, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDH) analyzed data from the 1994 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). This report summarizes the analysis of these findings, which indicate that women are more likely to be injured than men and that their injuries

Association of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with higher risk of cancer: a behavioral risk factor surveillance system study.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association between atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and risk of cancer in young adults. METHODS: We utilized data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a nationally representative US telephone-based survey to identify participants in the age group of 18-55 years who reported a history of ASCVD. These patients were defined as having premature ASCVD. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models were used to study the association between premature ASCVD and cancer including various cancer subtypes. RESUL

Association Between e-Cigarette Use and Depression in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2016-2017.

IMPORTANCE: The prevalence of the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in the United States has grown rapidly since their introduction to the market more than a decade ago. While several studies have demonstrated an association between combustible cigarette smoking and depression, the association between e-cigarette use and depression has not been thoroughly studied. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between e-cigarette use and depression in a nationally representative sample of the adult population in the United States. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional study of

Chronic Disease Disparities by County Economic Status and Metropolitan Classification, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2013.

INTRODUCTION: Racial/ethnic disparities have been studied extensively. However, the combined influence of geographic location and economic status on specific health outcomes is less well studied. This study's objective was to examine 1) the disparity in chronic disease prevalence in the United States by county economic status and metropolitan classification and 2) the social gradient by economic status. The association of hypertension, arthritis, and poor health with county economic status was also explored. METHODS: We used 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data. County economi

Health-Related Quality of Life and Bereavement in the 2019 Georgia Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

Poor Self-Rated Health (SRHp) is part of a four-item scale for self-assessment. SRH from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) is used to test hypotheses linking population-level well-being influenced by bereavement due to the death of a close friend or relative. By linking the prevalence rates of population-level well-being with exposure to bereavement, we extend our knowledge of this exposure beyond single-person studies. SRHp and bereavement were asked about in the 2019 field survey of 7354 adults aged 18 years and older. Multiple imputation was applied to handle missi

Assessing population risk for postmenopausal osteoporosis: a new strategy using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).

UNLABELLED: Osteoporosis public health measures are hindered by the inability to easily identify subclinical disease. We have now estimated state-specific osteoporosis prevalences using a simple formula (OST Index) to analyze age and weight of 62,882 older women; the prevalences determined are similar to those based on BMD. This new method has potential use for guiding implementation of osteoporosis prevention/treatment programs. INTRODUCTION: Although osteoporosis-related fractures are a major U.S. public health issue, population-based prevention programs have not yet been developed. One con

Trends in HIV Testing Among Adults in the Deep South: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2017-2023.

HIV testing is an entry point for both HIV prevention and treatment, and the CDC recommends that all adults of reproductive age undergo HIV testing at least once in their lifetime. However, HIV testing rates remain suboptimal. This study analyzed trends in HIV testing using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 2017 to 2023 across nine Deep South states-Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Descriptive statistics and Joinpoint linear regression were employed to assess lifetime HIV testing and testing within the p

Prevalence of COVID-19 and Long COVID by Industry and Occupation: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 2022.

BACKGROUND: Workers in healthcare and other essential occupations had elevated risks for COVID-19 infection early in the pandemic. No survey of U.S. workers to date has comprehensively assessed the prevalence of both COVID-19 and Long COVID across industries and occupations (I&O) at a detailed level. METHODS: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data for 2022 from 39 states, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands were used to estimate prevalence of self-reported history of COVID-19 and Long COVID, as well as the prevalence of Long COVID among those reporting prior COVID-19, by broad and deta

Association Between Cannabis Use and Subjective Cognitive Decline: Findings from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).

BACKGROUND: Cannabis consumption has rapidly increased in the United States due to more states legalizing non-medical and medical use. There is limited research, however, investigating whether cannabis may be associated with cognitive function, particularly across multiple dimensions of cannabis use. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine whether cannabis consumption reason, frequency, and method are associated with subjective cognitive decline (SCD). METHODS: Data were obtained from 4,744 U.S. adults aged 45 and older in the 2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BR

Racial differences in ideal cardiovascular health metrics among Mississippi adults, 2009 Mississippi Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death and health disparities in Mississippi. Identifying populations with poor cardiovascular health may help direct interventions toward those populations disproportionately affected, which may ultimately increase cardiovascular health and decrease prominent disparities. Our objective was to assess racial differences in the prevalence of cardiovascular health metrics among Mississippi adults. METHODS: We used data from the 2009 Mississippi Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to determine age-standardized prevalence estimates a

Contraceptive choices of women 35-44 years of age: findings from the behavioral risk factor surveillance system.

PURPOSE: With an estimated 3.1 million unintended pregnancies in the United States each year, patterns of contraceptive use have significant public health importance. Little literature has focused on these patterns in women over age 35. METHODS: Using data from the 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we conducted a population-based analysis of 22,890 women between the ages of 35-44 years who completed information on family planning. Lifestyle, demographic, and medical history covariates were assessed and multinomial logistic regression was used to obtain odds ratios (OR) and 95%

Cross sectional examination of public perceptions around substance misuse using state behavioral risk factor surveillance system data.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore public sympathy toward individuals with substance misuse, including relationships between that phenomenon and demographic, socioeconomic, and health factors in a single U.S. state. METHODS: Weighted summary statistics and logistic regression analyses were conducted using data from the 2021 Utah Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. The outcome measure was derived from a unique question which asked about sympathy toward those misusing substances, which may reflect behaviors indicative of or preceding substance use disorder (SUD). Other measures inc

Self-perceptions of mental health among U.S. Veterans and non-Veterans: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2022.

INTRODUCTION: Veteran and other service member sub-populations have an increased likelihood of mental illness. Diagnosed mental health conditions among Veteran populations have been well described. However, direct self-perceptions of mental health have been under-researched. This study examined the association between Veteran status and self-perceived mental health in U.S. adults to provide better monitoring of frequent mental distress among Veteran populations. Methods: The 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) cross-sectional telephone survey data were used in this analysis
