Symptoms in the menopausal transition: hormone and behavioral correlates.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association of headache, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, and concentration difficulties with menopausal stage and with reproductive hormones in the menopausal transition. METHODS: Women in the Penn Ovarian Aging Study were assessed longitudinally for 9 years. Data were obtained from structured interviews, a validated symptom questionnaire, menstrual bleeding dates, and early follicular hormone measures of estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone. Menopausal stages were based on menstrual bleeding patterns. Other risk factors included

Mouse behavioral assays relevant to the symptoms of autism.

While the cause of autism remains unknown, the high concordance between monozygotic twins supports a strong genetic component. The importance of genetic factors in autism encourages the development of mutant mouse models, to advance our understanding of biological mechanisms underlying autistic behaviors. Mouse models of human neuropsychiatric diseases are designed to optimize (i) face validity (resemblance to the human symptoms) (ii) construct validity (similarity to the underlying causes of the disease) and (iii) predictive validity (expected responses to treatments that are effective in the

Naltrexone in autistic children: behavioral symptoms and attentional learning.

OBJECTIVE: To assess critically the short-term efficacy and safety of naltrexone in autistic children and its effects on discrimination learning in the laboratory. METHOD: A parallel group design was employed. After a 2-week placebo baseline period, children were randomly assigned either to naltrexone or to placebo for a period of 3 weeks followed by a one-week posttreatment placebo period. Multiple raters and rating scales were employed in a variety of conditions. Forty-one children, all inpatients, ages 2.9 to 7.8 years, completed the study. Naltrexone reduced hyperactivity and had no effec

Assessment of behavioral and affective symptoms in Alzheimer's disease.

Noncognitive behavioral symptoms occurring during the prior week were studied in 34 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and 21 spousal control subjects via caregiver and patient interviews using the Behavioral Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease Rating Scale and the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia. Delusional or paranoid features were reported in 13 subjects (38%) and hallucinations in six (18%); patients with these psychoticlike symptoms had lower scores on the Folstein's Mini-Mental State Examination. Other behavioral symptoms reported in AD patients included anxiety (50%) and activity d

Glial Cells in Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) affect the majority of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), substantially increasing caregiver burden and the likelihood of institutionalization. The clinical management of BPSD remains challenging because of its poorly understood pathogenesis, the limited efficacy of conventional interventions, and significant safety concerns associated with current treatments. These limitations underscore the urgent need to identify novel therapeutic targets and develop glia-centered treatment strategies. As essential components of the central nervo

Job loss-related complicated grief symptoms: A cognitive-behavioral framework.

In a significant minority of people, involuntarily job loss can result in symptoms of job loss-related complicated grief (JLCG). The present cognitive-behavioral framework is introduced to explain the underlying processes that may lead to the development and maintenance of JLCG symptoms. Three core processes play a central role, namely (1) negative cognitions related to the job loss and misinterpretation of one's grief reactions; (2) anxious and depressive avoidance strategies to cope with the job loss and its consequences; and (3) insufficient integration of the job loss into the autobiograph

Brain Volume Predicts Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms in Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are frequent and troublesome for patients and caregivers. Considering possible preventive approaches, a better understanding of underlying neural correlates of BPSD is crucial. OBJECTIVE: The aim is to assess whether brain regional volume predicts behavioral changes in mild AD. METHODS: This work took part from the PACO study, a multicenter and prospective study that included 252 patients with mild AD from 2009 to 2014. Fifty-three patients were retained. Forty healthy matched control subjects from the ADNI cohort were incl

Neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and emotional symptoms common in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

INTRODUCTION: We studied neurodevelopmental and behavioral/emotional symptoms in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). METHODS: Retrospective case series of neurodevelopmental and behavioral/emotional symptoms obtained through review of systems of 700 DMD patients in relation to dystrophin gene mutations. RESULTS: The most common symptoms encountered were emotional/behavioral dysregulation (38.7%), inattention/hyperactive features (31.4%), obsessive and compulsive features (25.0%), and language/speech delays (24.4%). Most patients (72.7%) had at least one symptom. Patients with mu

Current treatment of behavioral and cognitive symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Cognitive and behavioral symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease, may occur even in the prodromal stages of the disease, worsen with disease progression, and surpass motor symptoms as the major factors affecting patient quality of life and caregiver burden. The symptoms may be caused by the disease pathology or they may represent adverse effects of treatment, or both etiological factors may contribute. Although many of these symptoms are related to dopaminergic dysfunction or dopaminergic medication, other neurotransmitters are involved as well. Behavioral symptoms including impulse control

Behavioral and psychological symptoms in Lewy body disease: a review.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a common neurodegenerative disease, second in terms of prevalence after Alzheimer's disease (AD). DLB may be suspected according to three core features which are cognitive and motor fluctuations, early visual hallucinations and parkinsonism; and more recently, according to the new criteria, REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). Behavorial and psychological symptoms associated with DLB are more frequent, more severe and appear earlier than those found in other neurodegenerative diseases. They may be at the forefront and are a major diagnostic and therapeutic chal

Cognitive and Behavioral Symptoms in ALSFTD: Detection, Differentiation, and Progression.

Brief screening tools that detect and differentiate patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia (ALSFTD) from those more subtle cognitive or behavioral symptoms (ALS plus) and motor symptoms only (ALS pure) is pertinent in a clinical setting. The utility of 2 validated and data-driven tests (Mini-Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination [M-ACE] and Motor Neuron Disease Behavioral Scale [MiND-B]) was investigated in 70 ALS patients (24 ALSFTD, 19 ALS plus, and 27 ALS pure). More than 90% of patients with ALSFTD scored at or below the cutoff on the M-ACE, whereas this was

Potential drug-drug interactions in Alzheimer patients with behavioral symptoms.

The use of multi drug regimens among the elderly population has increased tremendously over the last decade although the benefits of medications are always accompanied by potential harm, even when prescribed at recommended doses. The elderly populations are particularly at an increased risk of adverse drug reactions considering comorbidity, poly-therapy, physiological changes affecting the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of many drugs and, in some cases, poor compliance due to cognitive impairment and/or depression. In this setting, drug-drug interaction may represent a serious and even

Effect of pioglitazone treatment on behavioral symptoms in autistic children.

INTRODUCTION: Autism is complex neuro-developmental disorder which has a symptomatic diagnosis in patients characterized by disorders in language/communication, behavior, and social interactions. The exact causes for autism are largely unknown, but is has been speculated that immune and inflammatory responses, particularly those of Th2 type, may be involved. Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are agonists of the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma), a nuclear hormone receptor which modulates insulin sensitivity, and have been shown to induce apoptosis in activated T-lymphocytes

Reports by caregivers of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

UNLABELLED: Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) are relevant since they are frequent and cause distress to caregivers. However, they may not be reported by physicians due to the priority usually attributed to cognitive symptoms. OBJECTIVES: To verify whether BPSD is being systematically investigated by physicians even in specialized settings and whether their records on medical files are accurate. METHODS: Assessment of records on medical files of BPSD reported by caregivers to 182 patients (57.1% men, mean age 67.6±13.5 years) assisted in a tertiary-care behavioral neur

Mood and behavioral symptoms in individuals with chronic solvent exposure.

Psychiatric symptoms have been reported for individuals who experience chronic exposure to low levels of organic solvents. However, it is not known what proportion of such individuals experience psychiatric disorder; which specific disorders may be characteristic of this population; or whether bioaccumulation of lead contributes to the relationship between solvent exposure and psychiatric symptoms. Twenty-nine male journeymen painters and 32 male non-painter control subjects were administered semi-structured diagnostic interviews for DSM-III-R Axis I and Axis II disorders. Career solvent expos

Behavioral and psychological symptoms in Alzheimer's dementia and vascular dementia.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are highly prevalent and represent a significant burden for patients and their caregivers. Early recognition and management of these symptoms is crucial as they are associated with increased risk of institutionalization, impairments in daily functioning, reduced quality of life, and more rapid progression to severe dementia. This chapter will discuss the pathophysiology, proposed diagnostic criteria, clinical features, and management of BPSD, including apathy, depression, agitation/aggression, psychosis, and sleep disturbances.
