Cranial polyneuritis and Bell palsy.

In view of the specific nature of the clinical and neurologic findings in Bell palsy and other acute benign cranial neuritides, the neural component of cutaneous herpes simplex, the predilection of the herpesvirus for sensory nerves, and intrinsic behavior and immunologic interreactions of the herpesvirus within ganglion cells, it is suggested that (1) the entity that has been termed "idiopathic facial paralysis" be recognized as an acute benign cranial polyneuritis; and (2) other acute benign cranial neuritides be recognized as formes frustes of Bell palsy.

Bell's Palsy.

Bell's palsy is acute weakness of the facial muscles associated with compression of cranial nerve VII. The annual incidence is 20 to 30 per 100,000. Diagnosis is based on a thorough history and physical examination, with careful attention to exclude other causes of facial weakness, such as stroke or Lyme disease. Oral corticosteroids improve recovery rates and antiviral medications reduce synkinesis. Most patients will recover completely. Physical therapy and Botox injections can help patients with persistent symptoms. The roles of surgery and acupuncture remain unclear. Close follow-up is war

[Bell's palsy].

Idiopathic peripheral facial palsy, also named Bell's palsy, is the most common cause of peripheral facial palsy in adults. Although it is considered as a benign condition, its social and psychological impact can be dramatic, especially in the case of incomplete recovery. The main pathophysiological hypothesis is the reactivation of HSV 1 virus in the geniculate ganglia, leading to nerve edema and its compression through the petrosal bone. Patients experience an acute (less than 24 hours) motor deficit involving ipsilateral muscles of the upper and lower face and reaching its peak within the f

Bell's Palsy.

Bell's palsy is unilateral, acute onset facial paralysis that is a common condition. One in every 65 people experiences Bell's palsy in the course of their lifetime. The majority of patients afflicted with this idiopathic disorder recover facial function. Initial treatment involves oral corticosteroids, possible antiviral drugs, and protection of the eye from desiccation. A small subset of patients may be left with incomplete recovery, synkinesis, facial contracture, or hemifacial spasm. A combination of medical and surgical treatment options exist to treat the long-term sequelae of Bell's pal
