Searching beneath the shelf in macaque monkeys: evidence for a gravity bias or a foraging bias?

The reasons underpinning search biases in 2 species of macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta and Macaca arctoides) were explored over the course of 3 experiments requiring monkeys to search for a hidden food reward. The results reveal that monkeys are adept at exploiting perceptual cues to locate a food reward but are unable to use physical constraints such as solidity as cues to the reward's location. Monkeys prefer to search for a food reward beneath a solid shelf, not because they have an expectation that the reward should be there, but rather because, in the absence of usable cues, this bias eme…

The use of trial-level bias scores to examine attention bias and attention bias variability among people with and without social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models of anxiety propose that people with anxiety disorders show elevated levels of attention bias toward threat, but the most commonly used index of attention bias, which measures the construct with an aggregate score of multiple trials across an experimental session, shows poor test-retest reliability. Newer indices that measure attention bias dynamically on a trial-to-trial basis show good reliability and enable researchers to measure not only overall attention bias toward threat, but also attention bias variability. METHODS: The current study tested the hypothesis t…

Navigating Bias on Medical Cannabis.

Cannabis has long been associated with recreational drug use, countercultural movements, criminal activity, and stigma. Conversely, growing evidence supports that medical cannabis can help with management of chronic pain and treatment-related symptoms. As medical cannabis becomes more widely accepted in healthcare, Christian nurses must navigate tensions between personal values and beliefs, biblical perspectives, cultural norms, laws, and institutional policies about cannabis as they offer holistic compassionate care for patients who use medical cannabis.

Interpretation bias characterizes trait rumination.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rumination, a maladaptive cognitive style of responding to negative mood, is thought to be maintained by a variety of cognitive biases. However, it is unknown whether rumination is characterized by interpretation biases. METHODS: Two experiments examined the link between rumination and interpretation biases, revealed in lexical-decision tasks (LDT). A homograph with both benign and ruminative or otherwise negative meaning was presented on each trial and followed by a letter string, to which participants responded by judging whether it was a word or a non-word. Lette…

Obesity predisposes to Th17 bias.

Obesity is associated with numerous inflammatory conditions including atherosclerosis, autoimmune disease and cancer. Although the precise mechanisms are unknown, obesity-associated rises in TNF-alpha, IL-6 and TGF-beta are believed to contribute. Here we demonstrate that obesity selectively promotes an expansion of the Th17 T-cell sublineage, a subset with prominent pro-inflammatory roles. T-cells from diet-induced obese mice expand Th17 cell pools and produce progressively more IL-17 than lean littermates in an IL-6-dependent process. The increased Th17 bias was associated with more pronounc…

Recall bias, MMR, and autism.

Parents of autistic children with regressive symptoms who were diagnosed after the publicity alleging a link with measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine tended to recall the onset as shortly after MMR more often than parents of similar children who were diagnosed prior to the publicity. This is consistent with the recall bias expected under such circumstances.

Covariation bias in flight phobics.

Covariation estimates (CEs) between fear-relevant (FR) stimuli (slides of airplane crash sites) or fear-irrelevant (FI) stimuli (slides of airplanes in flight or mushrooms) and an aversive outcome (electrical shock) were examined in 15 flight phobics (high-fear participants) and 15 non-flight-phobic individuals (low-fear participants) by means of an illusory correlation experiment. In spite of a random relationship between all slide categories and outcome (illusory correlation), flight phobics exhibited a covariation bias and showed higher CEs for the contingency between FR slides and shocks t…

Response bias in plaintiffs' histories.

This study investigated response bias in self-reported history of factors relevant to the assessment of traumatic brain injury, toxic brain injury and related emotional distress. Response bias refers to systematic error in self-report data. A total of 446 subjects (comprising 131 litigating and 315 non-litigating adults from five locations in the United States) completed a symptom questionnaire. Data were obtained from university faculty and students, from patients in clinics specializing in physiatry neurology, and family medicine, and from plaintiffs undergoing forensic neuropsychological ev…

Bias in learning disabilities placement.

A nationally representative sample of 20,614 eighth grade students was examined for bias in placement decisions for children said to have learning disabilities. Factors investigated for bias were race, sex, and socioeconomic status. Path analysis showed significant and direct paths from sex and race to placement, controlling for socioeconomic status, academic ability, and behavioral competency. Boys were overrepresented in such classes beyond what their somewhat lower academic and behavioral competencies would predict. Caucasians were similarly overrepresented controlling for other variables i…

Exposing the loci of bias: a taxonomical exploration of sources of bias in population mental health research.

All studies are inherently biased, but some are more biased than others. This variation on a key theme from George Orwell's Animal Farm underscores a significant issue in public health. Ultimately, optimizing public health begins with understanding population health-particularly when assessing the impact of specific health risks that are often intertwined with both benign and malign health determinants. The objective of this contribution is to provide an overview of sources of bias in epidemiological research, drawing inspiration from the work of Rudolph Agricola-Northern Europe's first humani…

BIA-ALCL and BIA-SCC: Updates on Clinical Features and Genetic Mutations for Latest Recommendations.

Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) and Breast Implant-Associated Squamous Cell Carcinoma (BIA-SCC) are emerging neoplastic complications related to breast implants. While BIA-ALCL is often linked to macrotextured implants, current evidence does not suggest an implant-type association for BIA-SCC. Chronic inflammation and genetics have been hypothesized as key pathogenetic players, although for both conditions, the exact mechanisms and specific risks related to breast implants are yet to be established. While the genetic alterations in BIA-SCC are still unknown,

A Novel Guidewire Bias Modification Method for Atherectomy of Severely Calcified Femoropopliteal Lesion: JET BIAS.

BACKGROUND: The Jetstream atherectomy catheter is an effective option for treating severely calcified femoropopliteal lesions. However, unfavorable guidewire bias may result in inadequate plaque debulking. CASE SUMMARY: A 55-year-old man with a severely calcified popliteal artery lesion underwent endovascular treatment. Initial atherectomy failed to achieve sufficient luminal gain because of unfavorable guidewire bias. During the second procedure, intentional modification of the guidewire bias using our novel technique, JETstream using the Bidirectional and Intentional Atherectomy System (JET…

Approach Bias and Tobacco Craving as Mechanisms of the Effect of Approach Bias Retraining on Smoking Cessation.

INTRODUCTION: Approach bias, the automatic tendency to advance toward, rather than move away from appetitive cues, has been associated with greater tobacco cravings, dependence, and likelihood of smoking relapse. Approach bias retraining (ABR) has emerged as one way to reduce approach bias and promote avoidance of smoking cues. Yet, additional research is needed to identify the mechanisms that may help explain the effect of ABR on smoking cessation. AIMS AND METHODS: The current study uses data collected as part of a randomized controlled trial to test two unique mechanisms of action ([1] app…

The Pelvic Pain Bias Assessment: a new assessment of interpretation bias specific to pelvic pain.

Pelvic pain is a common and often debilitating experience with limited treatment options. Improving understanding of the psychosocial mechanisms involved in pelvic pain experiences will enhance the efficacy of pain management interventions. Interpretation bias is a promising psychosocial factor in leading models of chronic pain, yet its relevance for pelvic pain remains poorly understood. The current study sought to assess disorder specific interpretation bias in people with endometriosis and other pelvic pain-related conditions. To do so, we developed a new interpretation bias assessment tool…

Evaluating Scope and Bias of Population-Level Measles Serosurveys: A Systematized Review and Bias Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Measles seroprevalence data have potential to be a useful tool for understanding transmission dynamics and for decision making efforts to strengthen immunization programs. In this study, we conducted a systematized review and bias assessment of all primary data on measles seroprevalence in low- and middle-income countries (as defined by World Bank 2021 income classifications) published from 1962 to 2021. METHODS: On 9 March 2022, we searched PubMed for all available data. We included studies containing primary data on measles seroprevalence and excluded studies if they were clinic…
