Mathematical formulation and parametric analysis of in vitro cell models in microfluidic devices: application to different stages of glioblastoma evolution.

In silico models and computer simulation are invaluable tools to better understand complex biological processes such as cancer evolution. Ho … atile mathematical tools which, together with a sound parametric analysis, allow to explain complex biological phenomena. We show the utility of this hybrid "biomimetic in vitro-in silico" platform to help to elucidate the mechanisms involved in cancer processes, to better understand the role of the different phenomena, to test new scientific hypotheses and to design …

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in a cohort of deaf people.

We present six patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) who are also deaf. TS has been observed previously, but rarely reported in deaf people, and to date, so called "unusual" phenomenology has been highlighted. TS occurs almost worldwide and in all cultures, and the clinical phenomenology is virtually identical. In our cohort of deaf patients (we suggest another culture) with TS, the phenomenology is the same as in hearing people, and as in all other cultures, with classic motor and vocal/phonic tics, as well as associated phenomena including echo-phenomena, pali-phenomena and rarer

Interfacial phenomena and the ocular surface.

Ocular surface disorders, such as dry eye disease, ocular rosacea, and allergic conjunctivitis, are a heterogeneous group of diseases that require an interdisciplinary approach to establish underlying causes and develop effective therapeutic strategies. These diverse disorders share a common thread in that they involve direct changes in ocular surface chemistry as well as the rheological properties of the tear film and topographical attributes of the cellular elements of the ocular surface. Knowledge of these properties is crucial to understand the formation and stability of the preocular tear

Does melanopsin bistability have physiological consequences?

Recent publications in the Journal of Biological Rhythms have focused on the hypothesis that the property of melanopsin bistability is functionally translated to in vivo mammalian physiology. Physiological consequences of photopigment bistability likely can be inferred from the more extensive invertebrate literature. In invertebrates, photopigment bistability results in (a) photoreceptor independence from specialized chromophore regenerating systems, (b) long-wavelength enhancement of a blue light effect, (c) expression of a prolonged depolarization after potential following intense blue light

Unveiling STRs instability in a colorectal cancer FFPE sample: a case report.

In forensic genetics, sometimes formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) biopsy material taken during life is the only biological sample available for individual identification or paternity testing. In most cases, this biological tissue is characterized by the presence of tumor cells characterized by instability and loss of heterozygosity of microsatellites (MSI/LOH) compared to the DNA present in cells of normal tissue. In this case report, two FFPE samples from the same male subject were available for genetic investigation: one sample with colorectal cancer tissue and the other with normal tis

[Nosography of neuroses. 7. Relation between neurotic syndromes and the spasmophilic syndrome].

The investigators have examined the literature dealing with the psychic symptomatology that generally accompanies tetanic and spasmophilic phenomena, particularly the psychic and characterological substratum of patients affected by such symptoms. By focusing their inquiry on the spasmophilic symptoms displayed by neurotic patients, rather than on the psychic disturbances of patients with spasmophilic symptoms, the following considerations emerge: The widely held view that psychic disturbances in spasmophilic patients can be fitted into the classic picture of asthenic, anxious or depressive dis

A survey of dynamical genetics.

The classical view of genetics is based on the central dogma of molecular biology that assigns to DNA a fundamental but static role. According to the dogma, DNA can be duplicated only in identical copies (except for random errors), and no smart mechanism can alter the information content of DNA: in more detail, the direction of transfer of the genetic information is only from DNA through RNA to proteins and never backwards. However, starting from the so-called dynamic genome (McClintock's jumping genes), and the so-called dynamic mutations (such as the trinucleotide expansion or, more generall

A social systems approach to consultation-liaison psychiatry.

Consultation-liaison psychiatry traditionally has emphasized an approach to clinical practice based upon an understanding of the ways in which intrapsychic dynamics, personality characteristics and biological phenomena interact in a process that can be understood to relate to symptoms and disease in the individual. More recently the field has considered the interaction of interpersonal and group phenomena with individual characteristics and their influence upon patient pathology. Currently, however, there is limited understanding of the significance of organizational variables for the work of …

A structure-based approach for mapping adverse drug reactions to the perturbation of underlying biological pathways.

Adverse drug reactions (ADR), also known as side-effects, are complex undesired physiologic phenomena observed secondary to the administration of pharmaceuticals. Several phenomena underlie the emergence of each ADR; however, a dominant factor is the drug's ability to modulate one or more biological pathways. Understanding the biological processes behind the occurrence of ADRs would lead to the development of safer and more effective drugs. At present, no method exists to discover these ADR-pathway associations. In this paper we introduce a computational framework for identifying a subset of t

Synchrony in schizophrenia: a window into circuit-level pathophysiology.

As a complex neuropsychiatric disease with both hereditary and environmental components, schizophrenia must be understood across multiple biological scales, from genes through cells and circuits to behaviors. The key to evaluating candidate explanatory models, therefore, is to establish causal links between disease-related phenomena observed across these scales. To this end, there has been a resurgence of interest in the circuit-level pathophysiology of schizophrenia, which has the potential to link molecular and cellular data from risk factor and post-mortem studies with the behavioral phenom
