Blood-gas analysis and the assessment of acid-base status.

In this article the more common kinds of acid-base disorders have been discussed. To accurately assess the kind of acid-base disturbance found in a patient, the clinician must know the arterial pH, PaCO2, and the [HCO-3] in arterial blood. Acid-base disturbances are associated with fluid and electrolyte disturbances. Potassium balance is often upset in acid-base disturbances. Accurate determination of K+ balance requires serial or repeated determinations of plasma K+ concentration as well as careful clinical monitoring.

Inline blood gas analysis by gas chromatography in patients during and after coronary artery surgery.

A system was evaluated of measuring Pao2 and Pao2 by an inline sensor in the brachial artery and gas chromatography. Eight patients having coronary artery vein grafts were studied during anaesthesia, operation, perfusion and for 24 hours afterward. Compared to conventional blood gas analysis by polarography (electrodes), the chromatographic method gave readings for Pao2 which were not significantly different during normothermia. During hypothermic perfusion, the chromatographic system read significantly higher than the bench electrode, due at least in part to a difference in temperature correc…

Blood gas analysis as a surrogate for microhemodynamic monitoring in sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Emergency patients with sepsis or septic shock are at high risk of death. Despite increasing attention to microhemodynamics, the clinical use of advanced microcirculatory assessment is limited due to its shortcomings. Since blood gas analysis is a widely used technique reflecting global oxygen supply and consumption, it may serve as a surrogate for microcirculation monitoring in septic treatment. METHODS: We performed a search using PubMed, Web of Science, and Google scholar. The studies and reviews that were most relevant to septic microcirculatory dysfunctions and blood gas para…

Validation of blood gas analysis in arteriovenous fistula for hemodialysis.

INTRODUCTION: Arterial blood gas analysis is a minimally invasive technique used in our daily practice but is not a complication free technique. The aim of this study was to validate results from blood gas analysis obtained from the arteriovenous fistula (AVF)/graft as a surrogate marker of the arterial blood gas analysis. METHODS: A prospective observational study was made in 45 patients. We performed arterial and AVF/graft blood gas analysis and results were compared by a paired sample t Student test. RESULTS: Most of our subjects was male (68.9%) and the mean age was 67 years (±14). Hemod…

[Blood gas analysis in dogs in veterinary practice. A review].

Blood gas analysis is useful to obtain information about acid-base state and gas exchange of the lung. Interpretation is based on the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation. This approach has its limitations especially in interpretation of complex disturbances of acid-base status and has been complemented by base excess and anion gap. Peter Stewart described a model of quantitative approach to the acid-base disturbances which has been further developed and is known as the strong ion approach. This model differs from the traditional approach in the assessment of metabolic disorders of acid base status.…

Effect of delayed umbilical cord clamping on blood gas analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain if there are differences in umbilical cord blood gas analysis between immediate and delayed cord clamping. STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective observational study on 60 vaginally delivered healthy term newborns, we sampled umbilical cord blood immediately after delivery and at the time umbilical cord pulsation spontaneously ceased. RESULTS: There were significant decreases in pH, oxygen saturation (sO(2)), glycemia, oxygen content (ctO(2)), bicarbonate (HCO(3)(-)) and base excess (BE). Lactate and [Formula: see text] increased. Delayed cord clamping pH correlated with imme…

Further applications of blood gas analysis to gastric acidity determination.

It has been shown that the transient increase in total body bicarbonate that accompanies any acceleration of gastric acid secretion (the 'alkaline tide') is derivable from the associated changes in base excess in arterial blood and is precisely equivalent to the amount of acid secreted when the latter is simultaneously recovered. For the alkaline tide to qualify as a 'tubeless' measure of acid secretion, its equivalence to the latter has to be demonstrated without simultaneous aspiration of gastric juice. We therefore studied the course of the alkaline tide following pentagastrin injection and

Blood gas analysis: Clinical applications, interpretation and future directions (Review).

Blood gas analysis represents a cornerstone diagnostic method in clinical practice, providing rapid assessment of respiratory and metabolic status through evaluation of pH, partial pressure of oxygen, partial pressure of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate. The present comprehensive review discusses recent advances in blood gas analysis, including emerging artificial intelligence (AI) applications, controversial practices in venous vs. arterial sampling and closed-loop management systems in critical care. The present review critically synthesizes evidence from recent systematic reviews and meta-ana…

Arterial Blood Gas Analysis in Breath-Hold Divers at Depth.

The present study aimed to evaluate the partial pressure of arterial blood gases in breath-hold divers performing a submersion at 40 m. Eight breath-hold divers were enrolled for the trials held at "Y-40 THE DEEP JOY" pool (Montegrotto Terme, Padova, Italy). Prior to submersion, an arterial cannula in the radial artery of the non-dominant limb was positioned. All divers performed a sled-assisted breath-hold dive to 40 m. Three blood samplings occurred: at 10 min prior to submersion, at 40 m depth, and within 2 min after diver's surfacing and after resuming normal ventilation. Blood samples wer

[Blood gas analysis of varicocele, spermatic vein and peripheral vein].

Blood gas analysis was carried out in 80 cases of varicocele. The PO2 of the spermatic vein was lower than that of peripheral vein (P less than 0.01). There was also a significant difference of PO2 between I. and III. of varicocele (P less than 0.05). Blood of the spermatic vein showed metabolic acidosis. It is suggested that hypoxemia of the testes may affect spermatogenic function.

Blood gas analysis of mixed venous blood during normoxic acute isovolemic hemodilution in pigs.

Mixed venous oxygen saturation of hemoglobin (SvO2) and mixed venous oxygen tension (PvO2) may reflect the overall balance between oxygen consumption and delivery. Because of the potential value of monitoring SvO2 and PvO2 as indications of the state of tissue oxygenation, the aim of this study was to determine, during normoxic acute isovolemic hemodilution in pigs, the critical PvO2, critical SvO2, and critical oxygen extraction ratio (ER) at which oxygen uptake starts to decline during further induced hemodilution. During stepwise induced isovolemic hemodilution, a gradual decline in SvO2 an

[Mineworker's dyspnea. 2. Evaluation of blood gas analysis using arterialized blood from the earlobe].

The authors compared the results of measurements of blood gases on arterialized blood taken at the earlobe and on arterial blood collected at the brachial artery. The measurements were made at rest and during exercise with the main pre-occupation of the respective feasibility and relevance of both techniques in epidemiology. Ninety-four in-patients suffering from respiratory diseases at various stages of their evolution were concerned by this investigation. The techniques of blood collection were standardized. In particular the authors took care that the blood samples were collected simultaneo
