[C-reactive protein or blood sedimentation reaction os preventive studies in the physician's laboratory?].

The laboratory examinations are more and more significant in the practical internal medicine. The results are basic for decision-making in medicine. The patients are asking for check-up examinations, including screening examinations in the laboratory. We try to compare the significance of two important laboratory tests. The C-reactive protein (CRP) is very sensitive and allows a graduation of the inflammatory reaction. It is useful to take the CRP in a valuable screening examination. Compared with the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), an elevated CRP always signifies an organic illness. A

Urine sediment examination: Potential impact of red and white blood cell counts using different sediment methods.

BACKGROUND: Centrifugation is the primary method used to perform urine sediment analyses, but evaluation of other methods is required to validate centrifugation. OBJECTIVES: Non-urine materials were used to examine the repeatability (precision) and effectiveness (recovery) of four sediment methodologies on red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) counts. METHODS: Four urine sediment methods were compared using commercially available quality control material (QCM) and fresh canine RBCs in a diluent. Treatments included (a) 5 mL centrifugation at 390g for 5 minutes; (b) 1.5 mL centrifug

Red blood cell depletion with a semiautomated system or hydroxyethyl starch sedimentation for routine cord blood banking: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The major problem with long-term cord blood (CB) banking is the required storage space. In this sense, many studies have been performed to establish techniques for volume reduction of CB units. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We compared two different methods for CB volume reduction in both development and routine phases: hydroxyethyl starch (HES) sedimentation and top-and-bottom fractionation with the Optipress II (Baxter Healthcare). Monitoring the total nucleated cell (TNC) count, lymphocytes, CD34+ cells, and colony-forming unit (CFU) content in both preprocess and postprocess CB un

The red blood cell count and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate in the diagnosis of polycythaemia vera.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency in polycythaemia vera (PV) may impact the validity of the haematocrit (HCT), since HCT is red blood cell count (RBC) × mean corpuscular volume (MCV). OBJECTIVES: To investigate (a) the effect of microcytosis on HCT, (b) the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) as a possible additional diagnostic marker for PV. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 182 subjects: 39 with PV, 27 with essential thrombocythemia (ET) and 116 suspected of myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) with a secondary cause for either thrombocytosis or erythrocytosis. RESULTS: Patients with PV h

Gravity sedimentation of granulocytapheresis concentrates with hydroxyethyl starch efficiently removes red blood cells and retains neutrophils.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of granulocytapheresis concentrates can be limited by the volume of incompatible donor red blood cells (RBCs) in the component. Efficient reduction of RBCs in granulocyte units would result in safe transfusion of RBC-incompatible units. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Granulocyte concentrates were collected by continuous-flow apheresis from granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and dexamethasone-stimulated volunteer donors, with 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES) added continuously during apheresis as a RBC sedimenting agent to enhance granulocyte collection efficiency. Duration of antibiotic therapy and erythrocyte sedimentation rate predict blood culture results in children with acute osteomyelitis.

Blood cultures are routinely performed for microbiological diagnostic purposes in acute hematogenous osteomyelitis (AHO); however, the blood culture positivity rate is less than 50%. This retrospective study aimed to identify indicators to distinguish blood culture outcomes in children with AHO from July 2017 to 2024. Patients were stratified based on the results of blood cultures. The age, sex, duration of symptoms, duration of antibiotic therapy before blood culture, location of the lesion, maximum temperature, and inflammatory indexes from admission were reviewed. The efficacy of each index

Optimising methods of red cell sedimentation from cord blood to maximise nucleated cell recovery prior to cryopreservation.

Human cord blood is now an established source of stem cells for haematopoietic reconstitution. Red blood cell (RBC) depletion is required to reduce the cord blood unit volume for commercial banking. Red cell sedimentation using hydroxy ethyl starch (HES) is a standard procedure in most cord blood banks. However, while standardising the procedure for cord blood banking, a significant loss of nucleated cells (NC) may be encountered during standard HES sedimentation protocols. This study compares four procedures for cord blood processing to obtain optimal yield of nucleated cells. Gelatin, dextra

Mathematical model describing erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Implications for blood viscosity changes in traumatic shock and crush syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a simple and inexpensive laboratory test, which is widespread in clinical practice, for assessing the inflammatory or acute response. This work addresses the theoretical and experimental investigation of sedimentation a single and multiple particles in homogeneous and heterogeneous (multiphase) medium, as it relates to their internal structure (aggregation of solid or deformed particles). METHODS: The equation system has been solved numerically. To choose finite analogs of derivatives we used the schemes of directional differences. RESU

Difficulty in blood typing after infusion of plasma substitutes. Relationship to erythrocyte sedimentation rate and rouleaux-formation.

Recently we experienced one incident that the patient with A blood type reacted as AB type on macroscopic observation when the blood type was tested immediately after the infusion with Dextran70 in saline. The patient was confirmed as having the A type by reexamination later. Subsequently 90 cases were subjected to blood typing following infusion with one of the seven plasma substitutes such as dextran, MF-gelatin and HE-starch. One patient demonstrated an abnormal reaction. She had marked acceleration of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (E.S.R.) and positive serological reactions for syphilis b

Simulation of stress in a blood vessel due to plaque sediments in coronary artery disease.

Atherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease mainly caused by plaque deposition in blood vessels. Plaque comprises components such as thrombosis, fibrin, collagen, and lipid core. It plays an essential role in inducing rupture in a blood vessel. Generally, Plaque could be described as three kinds of elastic models: cellular Plaque, hypocellular Plaque, and calcified Plaque. The present study aimed to investigate the behavior of atherosclerotic plaque rupture according to different lipid cores using Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI). The blood vessel was also varied with different thicknesses (0
