We measured blood viscosity in rats 24 h after induction of acute renal failure by glycerol or HgCl2 injections. The blood viscosity values of rats with acute renal failure were significantly higher than those of controls at any shear rates. The mean values of plasma fibrinogen in animals with glycerol - (302.5 +/- 35.2 mg/100 ml) or HgCl2 - (342.1 +/- 15.9 mg/100 ml) induced acute renal failure were significantly elevated compared to control levels (169.6 +/- 16.7 mg/100 ml). We believe that the increased blood viscosity in acute renal failure was primarily due to high concentration of plasma…

Existing effective treatments for ischemic stroke restore blood supply to the ischemic region using thrombolysis or mechanical removal of cl … circulation is largely dependent on erythrocyte rheological (hemorheological) factors such as whole blood viscosity (WBV). Several studies in the past have demonstrated elevated WBV in stroke compared with healthy controls. Also, elevated WBV has shown to be an independent risk factor for stroke. Elevated WBV leads to endothelial dysfunction, decreases nitric oxi …

Since iron deficiency is associated with abnormal erythrocyte rheology, we investigated relationships between plasma ferritin and blood rheology in 36 male elite sportsmen (age: 22.38+/-0.9 years). On the whole, ferritin was negatively correlated with blood viscosity (r = -0.36, p < 0.05). When 23 subjects with low ferritin levels suggesting mild iron deficiency were compared with 13 matched sportsmen with normal ferritin levels, iron-deficient sportsmen were shown to have a higher blood viscosity at 1000 s(-l) (3.17+/-0.09 vs. 2.85+/-0.06 mPas, p < 0.05), explained by a higher plasma viscosit…

Whole blood viscosity (WBV) may promote endothelial shear stress, inflammation, and can accelerate the atherosclerotic process. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between WBV and aortic stenosis. The study included 209 participants of whom 49 patients had severe aortic stenosis, 98 patients had mild-to-moderate aortic stenosis and 62 patients served as control. WBV values were significantly higher for high shear rate (HSR) (P = 0.001) and for low shear rate (LSR) (P = 0.002) in severe aortic stenosis group. HSR and LSR were correlated with mean systolic transaortic gradient (P < 0.001 and P…

Blood viscosity at 10 shear rates, plasma viscosity, packed cell volume, plasma fibrinogen, serum alpha 2-macroglobulin, and serum proteins were measured in 83 patients with low-tension glaucoma (LTG) and 23 patients with 'high-tension glaucoma' (HTG: at least one IOP reading above 40 mmHg) and compared with those in 50 controls. Blood and plasma viscosity values and packed cell volume were significantly higher in the LTG group than those in controls. The HTG and the LTG groups differed only in plasma viscosity, but smoking and drinking habits in the HTG patients were greatly different from th…

In patients with primary hyperlipoproteinemia (23 patients type II a and II b, 13 patients type IV), changes in lipoprotein concentrations (lipid fraction), fibrinogen concentrations, in kinematic serum and plasma viscosity (determined by means of a capillary viscosimeter) and changes in relative apparent viscosity at shear rate 46 s-1 and 115 s-1 (determined by means of a plate-cone-viscosimeter) were measured before and after a clofibrate therapy (2 X 1 g/day) lasting for 7 to 9 weeks. Serum and plasma viscosity was lowered significantly in both types II and IV. The apparent viscosity decrea

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged cold-water immersion (CWI) has the potential to cause significant hypothermia and haemoconcentration; both of which have previously been shown to independently increase blood viscosity in vitro. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of CWI on blood viscosity and examine the relative contribution of decreased blood temperature and haemoconcentration.
METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers were immersed to mid-sternum in 10°C water for 90 minutes. Gastrointestinal (GI) temperature, haematocrit (Hct), and blood viscosity were measured pre- and post-CWI.
RESULTS:…

Blood and plasma viscosity, fibrinogen concentrations and whole blood filterability (VB) were evaluated before surgery and 7 and 30 days postoperatively in 2 groups of subjects, one of which comprised 10 hysterectomized women and the other 14 women who had undergone both hysterectomy and ovariectomy. Oestrogens and various metabolic haematological parameters were measured and correlated with the haemorrheological data. By day 7 after surgery fibrinogen concentrations and plasma viscosity had increased, while VB had decreased. Plasma viscosity and fibrinogen levels correlated negatively with VB

Abnormal levels of biological viscosity are closely associated with some diseases and malfunction (e.g. cancer, diabetes). Sensitive viscosity probes are of significant importance in disease diagnosis and remain an unmet need. In this research, we present a novel viscosity-sensitive dinuclear Ir(iii) complex (1), which freely rotates and shows weak phosphorescence in a low-viscosity environment, while in viscous media, both the phosphorescence intensity and lifetime are enhanced significantly. 1 can further be applied for phosphorescence lifetime imaging (PLIM) and measure lysosomal microvisco

BACKGROUND: Changes in blood viscoelastic properties have been proposed previosuly as etiopathogenesis for severe complications in COVID-19 and some cases of Sudden Deafness (SD). This is an attempt to verify if SD cases in patients admitted for SARS-Cov-2 infection can be correlated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective follow-up was carried out with COVID-19 patients, monitoring their blood viscosity (BV) at high shear rate (300 s-1) and inquiring them periodically for eventual hearing loss. This measurement was extended to cases bearing of SD in 2019 and 2020 without infection and a control…

Blood, plasma and serum viscosity and blood filtration were investigated in 43 unselected mixed cryoglobulinemia patients. A hyperviscosity syndrome was present in only one patient, and rapidly improved after plasma exchange and cyclophosphamide therapy. A clear-cut increase in blood viscosity was infrequently observed in mixed cryoglobulinemia, although significant differences were present in the plasma and serum viscosity of patients and controls. In contrast, blood filtration was severely impaired in a high percentage of cases (51 and 72% of the values recorded at 37 degrees and 25 degrees …

Serial blood rheologic measurements were made in 25 patients with acute myocardial infarction; measurements included blood and plasma viscosities, hematological data and plasma protein concentrations. The blood viscosity was elevated on admission and for more than 21 days after acute myocardial infarction. However, the cause of the elevated viscosity was changed as a function of time after acute myocardial infarction. During the first three days after admission, the high blood viscosity was mainly attributable to high hematocrit values. Thereafter, the hematocrit fell, but blood viscosity rema…
