[Third and fourth cervical pouches remnants and branchial clefts].

We present our experience with nine patients who were operated on for having cervical cysts lesions with the purpose of providing more information about this type of pathology. Five patients presented a left low-jaw cervical mass, diagnosed in the neonatal period. All of them presented with respiratory distress and in four of them quick local inflammatory manifestations appeared. A plain radiograph demonstrated liquid and air in the lesion and we proceeded to the operation. We made four drainages with marsupialization and in another patient complete excision of the lesion was made. Two marsupi

Variability and conservation in late chondrichthyan development: ontogeny of the winter skate (Leucoraja ocellata).

The ontogeny of the northwestern Atlantic batoid, Leucoraja ocellata, is described with special focus on the development of skate specific morphologies and the development of the fins. The results show that the sequence of events involving the early outgrowth of the paired fins and the initial development of the pharyngeal region is remarkably constant in skates, holocephalians, and sharks. However, differences exist in timing of the reshaping of the mandibular arch region, development of branchial filaments, median fins, denticles, and the order of branchial cleft formation. Despite the simil

Branchiootorenal syndrome: A case report.

Branchiootorenal syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterised by branchial arch anomaly, hearing loss, renal anomalies and other otologic manifestations. We report a case of apparent de novo mutation that presented with hearing loss, branchial sinus and other manifestations of the disease. It is extremely rare in the West African region, and we suggest a high index of suspicion in a patient presenting with branchial sinus and/or hearing loss.

Case report: fourth branchial pouch sinus.

The fourth branchial pouch sinus is a rare anomaly of the branchial arch apparatus. The 31st reported case of a fourth branchial sinus is presented. A thorough understanding of the developmental anatomy of the branchial region is necessary for the detection and treatment of this entity. The diagnosis can be made with a high index of suspicion in patients with recurrent left neck infections by demonstration of a pyriform sinus tract on pharyngoesophagram. Treatment consists of complete surgical excision following exposure of the entire course of the sinus tract including its insertion into the

[Are lateral neck cysts true derivatives of cervical lymph nodes?].

For decades the origin of the branchial cyst has been attributed to an abnormal involution of derivatives of the second branchial cleft. More recently the cyst has been thought to be the result of tonsillitis and lymphadenitis, stimulating a lymphatic spread of squamous epithelium from the tonsil to the regional lymph nodes. We reviewed the histopathologic reports of 81 branchial cysts and 19 fistulas and re-examined 30 cysts and 5 fistulas by light microscopy. Similarities of morphological features between the epithelium of tonsillar crypts and of the branchial cysts were striking and emphasi

A unique location of branchial cleft cyst: case report and review of the literature.

Branchial cleft cysts (BCC) are benign lesions caused by anomalous development of the branchial apparatus. This case report describes a 63-year-old woman with a 12 cm×12cm sized cystic mass located anterior to the manubrium sternum and sternum. MRI revealed a cystic lesion with a sinus tracking to the piriform sinus. Postoperative histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of branchial cleft cyst. Because of the course of the sinus track, it is believed that this was a fourth branchial cleft cyst. These are the rarest of the branchial anomalies, and extension below the peri-thyroid

[Ontogeny of the jaw].

Four pairs of branchial arch appear apparently in the neck region of human embryo about 32 days after fertilization. Maxillary prominence of the first branchial arch gives rise to the maxilla and zygomatic bone etc., and mandibular prominence forms the mandible and so on. Muscles for mastication are also derived from 1st branchial arch, into which fifth cranial nerves grow from the brain. Thus, human embryo improves the 1st branchial arches into the upper and lower jaws, and forms digestive organs needed for intake, mastication, and swallowing of foods. Finally they develop the brain for integ

Patho-Anatomic Spectrum of Branchial Cleft Anomalies: Proposal of Novel Classification System.

PURPOSE: Histogenesis, nomenclature, and classification of branchial cleft anomalies (BCAs) have been subjects of controversy for decades. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of current developmental theories (congenital, lymph node, and hybrid branchial inclusion theories) in defining the anatomic and histopathological characteristics of BCAs. METHODS: Ninety consecutive patients with BCAs who underwent surgical excision were enrolled in this 2-center retrospective cohort study. RESULTS: The present study included 90 patients: 46 (51.11%) women and 44 (48.89%) men (P >

First branchial cleft anomalies and the facial nerve.

First branchial cleft anomaly is an uncommon clinical problem that can be difficult to diagnose and treacherous to treat. It is generally believed that branchial anomalies arise from incomplete resolution of branchial cleft remnants. They may be a fistulous tract or cystic lesions, and they may be found in all age groups. This article presents three cases of first branchial cleft anomaly and offers an overview of the regional embryology and guidelines for surgical management and facial nerve preservation.

Pharyngeal Arches, Chapter 2: Ear and Neck Abnormalities.

The pharyngeal arches are the foundation of face and neck development. Impaired development of these embryologic structures can result in craniofacial abnormalities. Surgeons who manage head and neck pathology will invariably encounter conditions associated with aberrant pharyngeal arch anatomy, and a thorough understanding of the normal development of these structures is paramount to accurate diagnosis and treatment. This manuscript is the second of a four-part series written for plastic surgeons, focusing on the abnormal development of pharyngeal arches leading to pathologic ear and neck ano

A Bilateral, Non-syndromic, Type III Second Branchial Arch Sinus in a Neonate: a Case Report.

UNLABELLED: The incidence of a second branchial arch sinus accounts for 26-60% of all existing congenital malformations deriving from the branchial apparatus. They are most usually detected between 14 months and 7 years of age, while their incidence during neonatal period and infancy accounts for 0.06% of all cases. The aim of this case study is to emphasize three rare characteristic features: the manifestation during neonatal period, the bilateral localization and the ultrasonographic diagnostic documentation. A 25 days old girl was admitted by her parents due to the presence of mucoid excret

The role of epithelial remodelling in tooth eruption in larval zebrafish.

Based on light and transmission electron-microscopic observations on erupting first-generation teeth in the zebrafish, Danio rerio, we propose a biphasic mechanism for tooth eruption: (1). formation of an epithelial crypt prior to eruption of the tooth, possibly as a result of constraints in the epithelium resulting from the growth of adjacent tooth germs, and (2). detachment of cellular interdigitations both within the pharyngeal epithelium, at the pharyngeal epithelium/enamel organ boundary, and between the outer and inner dental epithelium, resulting in the exposure of the tooth tip in the
