Risk of breast cancer in women with breast cysts.

OBJECTIVE: To study the occurrence of breast cancer in women with breast cysts. DESIGN: Prospective follow-up study. SETTING: Office surgical practice. PATIENTS: All 742 women referred to the practice with breast cysts diagnosed by means of aspiration or, occasionally, biopsy between 1969 and 1985. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The incidence of breast cancer and the number of years between diagnosis of breast cyst and diagnosis of cancer. The observed number of cases of breast cancer was compared with the expected number, calculated from Ontario rates of breast cancer. RESULTS: Fifteen of the wo…

Breast epidermoid cyst: a case report.

An epidermoid cyst is a common benign skin lesion that can occur in any part of the body. However, epidermoid cysts occurring in the breast are extremely rare, rarely reported, and more prone to complications such as infection, rupture, and malignant alteration. Here, we report a case of a 50-year-old woman with a mammary epidermoid cyst. The patient noticed a mass of the left nipple during bathing. A puncture test was performed considering the epidermoid cyst. Moreover, local extended resection of the nipple and areola was performed. Postoperative pathological findings confirmed the diagnosis

Cytokines in human breast cyst fluid.

Gross cystic breast disease is a common benign disorder in which palpable cysts occur in the breast and are normally treated by aspiration of the contents. The cysts are classified as either Type 1, containing a high level of potassium ions and a low level of sodium ions, or as Type 2, with low potassium and high sodium ion concentrations. Steroid sulphatase activity in MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cell lines is regulated by exogenous breast cyst fluid (BCF), possibly because of cytokines in the BCF. A screening method was used to determine the range of cytokines in eight BCFs, four of each type. This…

Isolated hydatid cyst of the breast.

Although common in sheep-breeding communities, hydatid disease is actually found worldwide. Man is an occasional intermediate host in whom the disease is manifested by the presence of one or more hydatid cysts, usually located in the liver or lung and rarely at other sites such as the breast, as in our patient. A case of an isolated breast involvement that was diagnosed during surgery is presented and is followed by a brief discussion on the topic.

[Breast hydatid cyst. A case report].

We report the case of a 63 years old woman with a left mammary hydatid cyst. The patient presented with a left painless mammary mass of four months evolution. Mammography showed a dense image of 9 cm phi in the left breast. Ultrasound showed a solid and heterogeneous lesion. The tumor was excised under general anesthesia. The initial macroscopic inspection showed a tumor with a well defined fibrous capsule filled with a grayish material that contained membrane debris. The pathological study confirmed the diagnosis of a hydatid cyst.

pH of human breast cyst fluids.

The pH of 106 human breast cyst fluids has been measured immediately following aspiration. Values ranged from pH 6.3 to 7.8. They correlated with the ratio of Na+ to K+ in cyst fluid and differed significantly in the two populations of fluids which can be defined on electrolyte composition. Storage of cyst fluid for one month at -20 degrees C resulted in an increase in pH by a mean of 0.9 of a unit. pH provides a simple method for typing cyst fluids and this may be of clinical importance as there is evidence that there are differences in the natural history and association with breast cancer i…

Categorization of cysts and steroid levels in breast cyst fluid.

Several reports indicate that patients with macrocysts have a two- to fourfold higher risk of developing cancer. The fluid filling the cysts (breast cyst fluid, BCF) contains unusual amounts of biologically active substances, including hormones and metabolites. The accumulation of steroid conjugates, such as androgen and estrogen sulfates, deserves interest. Measuring BCF cations (K+, Na+) permits classification of cysts into two major subsets (type I and type II), conceivably associated with a different degree and with a turnover of apocrine cells in the lining epithelium. Type I (high K+/Na+…

Epidermal inclusion cyst of the breast.

Epidermal inclusion cysts are uncommon in the breast, but the consequences can be severe when these cysts occur in the breast parenchyma. Here, we report two such cases. The patient in case 1 was an 85-year-old woman with a 3-cm palpable mass in the right breast. Mammography revealed a round and smoothly outlined mass, which indicated a benign tumor, and sonography showed an irregularly shaped and heterogeneous hypoechoic mass. Breast cancer was suspected on the basis of the sonographic findings and the age of the patient, but excisional biopsy revealed an epidermal inclusion cyst. The patient

Metaplastic synovial cyst in male breast.

Metaplastic synovial cyst (synovial metaplasia of the skin) refers to a cyst lined by a membrane resembling hyperplastic synovial villi. Synovial-like metaplasia has been described around prostheses and breast implant capsules and may occur in postsurgical cutaneous scars, unrelated to prostheses or implants. We describe a metaplastic synovial cyst occurring in the left breast of a 23-year-old man 2 years after surgical treatment of gynecomastia. The expanding clinicopathologic scenario of metaplastic synovial cyst, in scar tissue in male breast unrelated to mammary implants, and as a potentia

Estriol in human breast cyst fluid.

Although cystic lesions of the breast are not precancerous per se, statistical studies have indicated that this condition predisposes a 2- to 4-fold greater risk for breast cancer. Seeking a hormonal etiology to this correlation, investigators have analyzed breast cyst fluid ( BCF ) for steroids and have compared the levels to those in the blood. The 17-ketosteroids-androsterone, dehydroisoandrosterone and their sulfates are elevated in BCF . The same is true for estrone sulfate and estradiol-3-sulfate. We have found the most dramatic differences with estriol-3-sulfate (E3-3S), the concentrati…
