Understanding bullying in healthcare organisations.

Bullying is a pervasive problem in healthcare organisations. Inquiries and reports on patient care and poor practice in the NHS have emphasised the substantial negative effects this behaviour may have on patient care. If bullying is to be addressed, it is crucial we develop clarity about what behaviours constitute bullying and how these behaviours differ from other negative behaviours in the workplace. It is important that we recognise the extent of the problem; statistics on the prevalence of bullying are likely to be an underestimate because of under-reporting of bullying. Effective interven…

Variation in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity among bullied and non-bullied children.

We examined the relationship between being bullied during childhood and activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis as assessed through repeated measures of salivary cortisol. A non-clinical sample of 154 (74 boys) predominantly Caucasian middle-class 12-year-olds each provided detailed information about their experiences with bullying and six saliva samples were standardized across time and day. Children with a history of child maltreatment, diagnosed psychiatric illness, foster care placement, medication use (psychotropic and oral contraception) and aggression directed toward p…

Bullying victimization and self-harm in adolescents: The roles of emotion regulation and bullying peer norms.

BACKGROUND: While prior research has suggested that experiencing bullying victimization increases the risk of self-harm, the exact role of intrapersonal emotion regulation and bullying peer norms in contributing to this association are not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mediating effects of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression and the moderating effects of bullying descriptive and popularity norms on the association between bullying victimization and self-harm. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A total of 3545 Chinese adolescents (52.4 % boys; Mage = 12.36 years; 90…

Bullying and lower urinary tract symptoms: why the pediatric urologist should care about school bullying.

PURPOSE: Bullying has become a social plague associated with various deleterious outcomes. We hypothesized that pediatric lower urinary tract symptoms could be associated with exposure to bullying. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed exposure to school bullying via the Setting the Record Straight bullying questionnaire in children 8 to 11 years old being evaluated for lower urinary tract symptoms at our pediatric urology clinic. Lower urinary tract symptoms were quantified with the Vancouver Symptom Score. Children 8 to 11 years old presenting for pediatric well visits also completed the quest…

The coevolution of bullying and friendship networks.

The coevolution of bullying and friendship networks and the moderating effects of classroom bullying popularity norms were examined in a sample of 965 students (52.1% boys) in 22 fourth- and fifth-grade classes. Longitudinal social network analysis showed that children were more likely to bully their friends' victims (bully influence effect) and to be bullied by their friends' bullies (victim influence effect); two children bullying the same child were likely to be friends (bully selection effect), and two victims bullied by the same child were likely to be friends (victim selection effect). B…

Interventions for prevention of bullying in the workplace.

BACKGROUND: Bullying has been identified as one of the leading workplace stressors, with adverse consequences for the individual employee, groups of employees, and whole organisations. Employees who have been bullied have lower levels of job satisfaction, higher levels of anxiety and depression, and are more likely to leave their place of work. Organisations face increased risk of skill depletion and absenteeism, leading to loss of profit, potential legal fees, and tribunal cases. It is unclear to what extent these risks can be addressed through interventions to prevent bullying. OBJECTIVES: …

Bullies and power: a look at the research.

Research indicates that bullying continues to plague schools, and school-based anti-bullying programs do little to take away the opportunities and power of the child who bullies. Research indicates methods to identify the child who bullies, and provides guidelines to change the bullying behaviors. Unfortunately, this information fails to result in changes in practice. Nomination of children who bully by their peers and the utilization of methods that remove the bully's power are promising interventions. Administrators, teachers, parents, nurses, and mental health providers need to be proactive…

Teachers' and pupils' definitions of bullying.

BACKGROUND: Comparison of teachers' and pupils' definitions of bullying is important for considering the implications for reports of its incidence in schools, for the study of developmental trends in children's and adolescents' perceptions of the phenomenon and for evaluating the effectiveness of interventions designed to combat bullying. AIMS: To investigate the effects of gender, teacher/pupil status and, for pupils, bullied/non-bullied (target/non-target) status and age on the definition of bullying. SAMPLES: Teachers (N=225: 158 women, 67 men) and pupils (N=1,820: 466 boys, 460 girls wer…

Being bullied what an insight.

Bullying and harassment have occupied a prominent position in NATN workshops and publications recently. Challenging Behaviours in the Perioperative Environment identifies practices that fall within the definition of these socially and legally unacceptable activities, and provides advice and guidance to victims and those who use bullying or violent behaviours. In this article, the author draws on her own experience of being a victim and provides advice on how to identify and deal with bullying.

[State of bullying in a geriatric hospital].

Recently, reports of bullying and beatings among school children has brought these problems to the public attention. Unfortunately similar problems exist among the aged and institutionalized patients in geriatric hospitals, e.g., covert teasing and bullying of the weak. Therefore, the present status of bullying or being bullied in our geriatric hospital was analyzed and their backgrounds studied to develop clinical countermeasures against bullying. Results of this study were as follows; 1. Nineteen percent of patients were victims of bullying, and patients who had performed the bullying were 3…

From victim to victimizer: Hostility, anger, and depression as mediators of the bullying victimization-bullying perpetration association.

The principal aim of this study was to test one cognitive (i.e., hostility) and two emotional (anger and depression) variables as possible mediators of the well-documented association between bullying victimization and bullying perpetration. Using data from the Illinois Study of Bullying and Sexual Violence (ISBSV), a sample of 718 pre-adolescent/early adolescent children (343 boys and 375 girls) provided self-report data in three waves, with six months between waves. Consistent with predictions, hostility and depression correlated equally well with prior bullying victimization but only hostil…

Reducing Ambulatory New Graduate Nurse Bullying.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing bullying as a new graduate RN is considered a rite of passage by some in the nursing profession. However, such behaviors erode new nurses' self-confidence, hinder their professional development, and can negatively affect patient outcomes. Research links workplace incivility and bullying to increased medication errors, patient falls, and greater hospital costs. Within a large, comprehensive cancer center, high rates of these behaviors have been reported, yet staff education on their impact remains limited. PURPOSE: This quality improvement project aimed to reduce bully…

Nomogram predicting bullying victimization in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to construct a cross-sectional study to predict the risk of bullying victimization among adolescents. METHODS: The study recruited 17,365 Chinese adolescents using stratified random cluster sampling method. The classical regression methods (logistic regression and Lasso regression) and machine learning model were combined to identify the most significant predictors of bullying victimization. Nomogram was built based on multivariable logistic regression model. The discrimination, calibration and generalization of nomogram were evaluated by the receiver …
