BACKGROUND: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) originates from parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland. These cells secrete calcitonin, which can be measured in serum using immunoassays to monitor MTC. We previously studied regulation of the calcitonin (CT) receptor (CTR) by glucocorticoid (GC) and CT in cultures of mature mouse osteoclast-like cells (OCLs). The present studies were designed to examine the interaction of CT and GC in regulation of the CTR in osteoclasts and the molecular mechanisms involved. There appears to be a consensus that 100 IU/day of nasally administered salmon calcitonin may prevent trabecular bone loss during the first years of the menopause.
