Disorders of calcium metabolism and parathyroid disease.

Pregnancy and lactation are associated with profound changes in calcium physiology. This can make interpretation of biochemical tests difficult during these times. Diseases of bone and calcium metabolism are uncommon during pregnancy but can be severe when they occur. These conditions are complicated by the need for dual consideration for the maternal and foetal health. These conditions are also much less well studied than related conditions that occur outside of pregnancy resulting in a reduction in evidence for and confidence in recommendations relating to management. This chapter will revie

Disorders of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium metabolism.

Abnormalities of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus are common in hospitalized patients. Infrequently patients might present in the outpatient settings with non-specific symptoms that might be due to abnormalities of divalent cation (magnesium, calcium) or phosphorous metabolism. Several inherited disorders have been identified that result in renal or intestinal wasting of these elements. Physicians need to have a thorough understanding of the mechanism of calcium, magnesium and phosphorous metabolism and diagnoses disorders due to excess or deficiency of these elements. Prompt identification a

Diagnostic procedures in disorders of calcium metabolism.

The investigation of a patient with a suspected disorder of calcium metabolism is most rapidly and efficiently performed by observing a standard procedure, the initial stages of which are simple and mandatory, the later stages more complex and determined by the initial results and the depth of investigation required. Needless to say, the investigations are preceded by history taking and routine physical examination. The following account is a summary of available procedures, most of which have been described elsewhere in greater detail (Nordin et al., 1976a).

[Regulation and disorders of calcium and phosphate metabolism].

Calcium and phosphate are the constituents of biomineral, and their levels in circulation are regulated by various hormones. Disorders in calcium/phosphate metabolism are often associated with skeletal demineralization and pathological calcification. Some of the hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia are caused by the increased bioactivity of FGF23, and classified into FGF23-mediated hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia. In the adult patients with FGF23-mediated hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia, mineralizing enthesopathy is an often observed complication. In addition, mutations of the sam
