Pulmonary capillaries are more resistant to stress failure in dogs than in rabbits.

We previously showed that stress failure of pulmonary capillaries occurs at transmural pressures of approximately 50 cmH2O (40 mmHg) and above in rabbit lung. In this study, we examined whether pulmonary capillaries are more resistant to failure in dogs than in rabbits. This might be expected because of the greater athletic ability of dogs and therefore their presumably greater tolerance to large cardiac outputs and higher pulmonary vascular pressures. The lungs of 12 anesthetized mongrel dogs [22.1 +/- 5.2 (SD) kg] were perfused in situ with autologous blood and then with saline-dextran (5 mi

Increased alveolar/capillary membrane resistance to gas transfer in patients with chronic heart failure.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate pulmonary diffusive resistance to gas exchange in patients with heart failure and healthy volunteers, assessing the relative contributions of the alveolar/capillary membrane and pulmonary capillary blood. SETTING: Hospital outpatient department and pulmonary function laboratory. PATIENTS: 38 patients (mean age 60) receiving treatment with loop diuretics and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors for stable symptomatic heart failure of > 6 months duration (New York Heart Association (NYHA) classes II and III). Results were compared with those of 17 healthy voluntee

A numerical model for blood oxygenation in the pulmonary capillaries--effect of pulmonary membrane resistance.

A study of the blood oxygenation in pulmonary capillaries is made by considering the transport mechanisms of molecular diffusion, convection and the facilitated diffusion due to the presence of haemoglobin. The resistance offered by the pulmonary membrane on the transport of gases has been incorporated. The resulting system of coupled, non-linear partial differential equations is solved numerically. It is found that, in the immediate neighbourhood of the entry, the amount of dissolved O2 decreases. This decreases further as the resistance offered by the pulmonary membrane increases. The rate o

Hydrophilic Modification of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) Capillary Membranes with Chemical Resistance by Constructing Three-Dimensional Hydrophilic Networks.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) capillary membranes, known for the great chemical resistance and thermal stability, are commonly used in membrane separation technologies. However, the strong hydrophobic property of PTFE limits its application in water filtration. This study introduces a method whereby acrylamide (AM), N, N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA), and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) undergo free radical copolymerization, followed by the hydrolysis-condensation of silane bonds, resulting in the formation of hydrophilic three-dimensional networks physically intertwined with the PTFE capillary m

Temporal Changes in Skeletal Muscle Capillary Responses and Endothelial-Derived Vasodilators in Obesity-Related Insulin Resistance.

The inability of insulin to increase skeletal muscle capillary blood volume (CBV) reduces glucose uptake in insulin resistance (IR). We hypothesized that abnormalities in endothelial-derived vasodilator pathways are temporally associated with the development of IR and an impaired ability to increase skeletal muscle CBV. A comprehensive metabolic and vascular screening assessment was performed on 10 adult rhesus macaques at baseline and every 4-6 months for 2 years after starting a high-fat diet supplemented with fructose. Diet changes resulted in an 80% increase in truncal fat by 4 months. Hyp

Orthostatic challenge reveals impaired vascular resistance control, but normal venous pooling and capillary filtration in familial dysautonomia.

Patients with familial dysautonomia (FD) frequently have profound orthostatic hypotension without compensatory tachycardia. Although the aetiology is presumed to be sympathetic impairment, peripheral vascular responses to orthostasis have not been assessed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the control of vascular responses to postural stress in FD patients. Measurements of heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac stroke volume and cardiac output (CO), by impedance cardiography, and calf-volume changes, by impedance plethysmography, were taken from nine FD patients and 11 control subjects while

Capillary-electrophoresis mass spectrometry for the detection of carbapenemases in (multi-)drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

In a time in which the spread of multidrug resistant microorganisms is ever increasing, there is a need for fast and unequivocal identification of suspect organisms to supplement existing techniques in the clinical laboratory, especially in single bacterial colonies. Mass-spectrometry coupled with efficient peptide separation techniques offer great potential for identification of resistant-related proteins in complex microbiological samples in an unbiased manner. Here, we developed a capillary electrophoresis-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry CE-ESI-MS/MS bottom-up proteomics wo

A robust polymetallic-coated sheathless interface with high acid and alkali resistance for coupling capillary electrophoresis with mass spectrometry.

A robust interface for coupling capillary electrophoresis (CE) to mass spectrometry (MS) was critical to maintain high separation efficiency of CE while achieving high sensitivity of MS. Current interfaces often suffer from problems such as reproducibility and ruggedness. For this purpose, a new polymetallic-coated sheathless interface was developed for the coupling of CE with MS. The electrical contact of the interface was achieved by etching one end of the fused silica capillary into a tapered tip using hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution, and then depositing a thin layer of chromium followed by
