An efficient route for the synthesis of a Tin(II) substituted carbodiimide from a diazo compound.

The reaction of beta-diketiminate substituted tin(II) chloride, LSnCl (1; L = HC{(CMe)(2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)N)}(2)), with the lithium salt of trimethylsilyl diazomethane (LiC(N(2))SiMe(3)) is described. In the course of the reaction, the exclusive formation of tin(II) substituted carbodiimide LSnNCNSiMe(3) (2) is observed in good yield. This reaction occurs at room temperature without any side products. Furthermore, we reacted diiron nonacarbonyl, Fe(2)(CO)(9), with compound 2 to confirm the carbodiimide skeleton (N=C=N) without rearrangement. The latter reaction leads to the tin(II) coordinate i

Tailoring the properties of cholecyst-derived extracellular matrix using carbodiimide cross-linking.

Modulation of properties of extracellular matrix (ECM) based scaffolds is key for their application in the clinical setting. In the present study, cross-linking was used as a tool for tailoring the properties of cholecyst-derived extracellular matrix (CEM). CEM was cross-linked with varying cross-linking concentrations of N,N-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl)-N'-ethyl carbodiimide (EDC) in the presence of N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). Shrink temperature measurements and ATR-FT-IR spectra were used to determine the degree of cross-linking. The effect of cross-linking on degradation was tested using the co

Experimental and quantum-chemical studies on the thermochemical stabilities of mercury carbodiimide and mercury cyanamide.

Calorimetric dissolution measurements of the solid compounds mercury carbodiimide HgNCN(I) and mercury cyanamide HgNCN(II) in aqueous HCl that targeted at their thermochemical stabilities show the cyanamide species HgNCN(II) to be the more stable phase in terms of both enthalpy and Gibbs energy with an enthalpy difference of 2-3 kJ mol-1. While the stability ranking of HgNCN(I) and HgNCN(II) thus perfectly matches Pearson's HSAB concept, quantum-chemical stability predictions using common parametrizations of density functional theory appear to be fundamentally flawed. An analysis of the error

Comprehensive Reinvestigation of Carbodiimide Guanylation: HCl-Initiated Access to Tri- and Tetrasubstituted Guanidines.

Guanidines are well-known π-electron-conjugated organic bases used widely in synthesis as well as in industry, with more than 150 years of history. Hence, a plethora of synthetic approaches leading to the formation of the central N3C motif has been published, from conventional methods to more sophisticated catalysts. Despite this, some substrates are still not easily obtainable, and the reported procedures lack simplicity and universality. Here, procedures yielding guanidines from carbodiimides and various amines are provided. Thermally conducted reactions of aliphatic amines and carbodiimides…

The Effect of Carbodiimide Crosslinkers on Gelatin Hydrogel as a Potential Biomaterial for Gingival Tissue Regeneration.

Connective tissue grafts for gingival recession treatment present significant challenges as they require an additional surgical site, leading to increased morbidity, extended operative times, and a more painful postoperative recovery for patients. Gelatin contains the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) sequence, which supports cell adhesion and interactions. The development of gelatin hydrogels holds significant promise due to their biocompatibility, ease of customization, and structural resemblance to the extracellular matrix, making them a potential candidate for gingival regeneration. Carbodiimide-Mediated Beckmann Rearrangement of Oxyma-B as a Side Reaction in Peptide Synthesis.

The suppression of side reactions is one of the most important objectives in peptide synthesis, where highly reactive compounds are involved. Recently, the violuric acid derivative Oxyma-B was introduced into peptide synthesis protocols as a promising additive to efficiently control the optical purity of the amino acids prone to racemization. However, we discovered a side reaction involving the Beckmann rearrangement of Oxyma-B during the coupling reaction, which compromises the yield and purity of the target peptides. Here, we present the investigation of the mechanism of this rearrangement a

The effect of solvent composition on grafting gallic acid onto chitosan via carbodiimide.

The primary antioxidant (AOX) activity of chitosan can be introduced by grafting of phenolic compound - gallic acid (GA) to its amino and/or hydroxyl groups. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ethanol (EtOH) concentration (0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% in water) on efficiency of grafting GA onto chitosan in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide (EDC)/N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). The grafting was confirmed by FTIR and the efficiency was quantified as Folin's total phenolics. When pure deionized water was used as a sole solvent (0% EtOH), GA was grafted

Protein immobilization on the surface of liposomes via carbodiimide activation in the presence of N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide.

A method of the covalent immobilization of proteins on the surface of liposomes, containing 10% (by mol) of N-glutaryl phosphatidylethanolamine, is described. Carboxylic groups of liposomal N-glutaryl phosphatidylethanolamine were activated in the presence of water-soluble carbodiimide and N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide and reacted subsequently with protein amino groups. The liposome-protein conjugates formed contained up to 5 x 10(-4) mol protein/mol lipid. Lectins (RCA1 and WGA) upon immobilization on liposomes retained saccharide specificity and the ability to agglutinate red blood cells. The im

Silk fibroin/vitreous humor hydrogel scaffold modified by a carbodiimide crosslinker for wound healing.

Natural-derived biomaterials can be used as substrates for the growth, proliferation, and differentiation of cells. In this study, bovine vitreous humor as a biological material was cross-linked to silk fibroin with different concentration ratios to design a suitable substrate for corneal tissue regeneration. The cross-linked samples were evaluated with different analyses such as structural, physical (optical, swelling, and degradation), mechanical, and biological (viability, cell adhesion) assays. The results showed that all samples had excellent transparency, especially those with higher sil

In vitro degradation of dermal sheep collagen cross-linked using a water-soluble carbodiimide.

Bacterial collagenase was used to study the susceptibility of dermal sheep collagen (DSC) cross-linked with a mixture of the water-soluble carbodiimide 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl)-carbodiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxysuccinimide (E/N-DSC) towards enzymatic degradation. Contrary to non-cross-linked DSC (N-DSC), which had a rate of weight-loss of 18.1% per hour upon degradation, no weight loss was observed for E/N-DSC during a 24 h degradation period. The tensile strength of the E/N-DSC samples decreased during this time period, resulting in partially degraded samples having 80% of the

Synthesis and characterization of SPIONs@APTES conjugated with chlorin E6 via carbodiimide for photodynamic therapy.

Glioblastoma multiforme is one of the most aggressive primary brain tumours and remains highly resistant to conventional therapeutic approaches. Photodynamic therapy has emerged as a promising alternative. However, the clinical application of many photosensitisers is limited by low stability, poor solubility, and non-specific distribution in biological systems. In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were synthesised by a coprecipitation method and subsequently functionalised with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to enable the conjugation of the photosensitiser Chlorin E6 (Ce6). Bis(diiminate)-Supported Bimetallic Complexes: Tri-Coordinated Zinc for Nitrile and Carbodiimide Hydroboration.

We report the synthesis and characterization of bis(diiminate)-supported tricoordinated zinc complexes (1-4) and demonstrate the catalytic activity of one representative compound in the hydroboration of nitriles and carbodiimides using pinacolborane (HBpin). Experimental and theoretical studies were performed to elucidate the reaction mechanism. Our findings indicate that the hydroboration reaction initiates with the formation of a tricoordinated zinc hydride intermediate, followed by the subsequent attack of nitriles and carbodiimides. This leads to the formation of a four-membered metallacyc…

Surface treatment of flexor tendon autografts with carbodiimide-derivatized hyaluronic Acid. An in vivo canine model.

BACKGROUND: Clinical and experimental studies have demonstrated that restrictive adhesions and poor digital motion are common complications after extrasynovial tendon grafting in an intrasynovial environment. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that surface modification of an extrasynovial tendon with use of a carbodiimide-derivatized hyaluronic acid-gelatin polymer (cd-HA) improves gliding ability and digital function after tendon grafting in a canine model in vivo. METHODS: The peroneus longus tendons from both hindpaws of twenty-four dogs were harvested and transplanted to

Monitoring surface transformations of metal carbodiimide water oxidation catalysts by operando XAS and Raman spectroscopy.

Transition metal carbodiimides MNCN (M = Co, Ni, Co0.9Ni0.1, Mn and Cu), were studied by simultaneous operando Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with focus on surface oxide detection during electrocatalytic water oxidation. As a proof of concept, easily modifiable screen-printed electrodes were used in this unified operando synchrotron setup for a trade-off between convenience of electrochemical anodization and spectroscopic data acquisition. Monitoring of chemical and structural transformations at the electrode surface during initial anodic electrode polarization shows stability f…

Carbodiimide conjugation of fibronectin on collagen basal lamina analogs enhances cellular binding domains and epithelialization.

To improve the regenerative potential of biomaterials used as bioengineered scaffolds, it is necessary to strategically incorporate biologically active molecules that promote in vivo cellular processes that lead to a fully functional tissue. This work evaluates the effects of strategically binding fibronectin (FN) to collagen basal lamina analogs to enhance keratinocyte functions necessary for complete skin regeneration. We found that FN that was passively adsorbed to collagen-glycosaminoglycan basal lamina analogs enhanced epithelial thickness and keratinocyte proliferation compared with nont

Temporal dependence emerges from a carbodiimide driven acid-anhydride equilibrium coupled to a photocatalytic decarboxylation reaction.

Neurons process multiple stimuli in a temporally dependent manner, which filters noise and enables precise control over complex functions. Synthetically mimicking neuronal processes may be useful for autonomous chemical systems that are able to make their own decisions, yet such time-dependence has not found an equivalent in synthetic reaction networks. Herein, we show that carbodiimide driven equilibria between acid and anhydride can be coupled to photochemical decarboxylation from which temporal input dependence emerges. Under optimized conditions, the decarboxylation of the anhydride is muc

Interactions of N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Carbodiimide (NHC-CDI) Adducts with Light: Electronic, Steric, and Orbital Effects.

N-Heterocyclic carbene-carbodiimide (NHC-CDI) adducts have extensive applications due to their tunable structure, versatile reactivity, and synthetic accessibility. Previous NHC-CDI studies have centered around thermal, mechanical, or electrochemical activation; however, little is understood about their photoproperties. In this work, we aim to understand the effects of their structure on UV-vis absorption, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), and the HOMO-LUMO gaps. We found that conjugation of the CDI substituents is the key factor for
