Organocatalytic Desymmetric Carbon-Carbon Bond Cleavage of Unstrained Cyclohexanones.

Enantioselective skeletal editing of unstrained cyclohexanones via C-C bond cleavage remains a major synthetic challenge. Herein, we report a chiral enamine-catalyzed desymmetrizing Dieckmann condensation of prochiral cyclohexanones to deliver enantioenriched γ-lactams and γ-amino ketones. Using a cinchona-derived amine catalyst and K2CO3, aprotic dichloroethane furnishes γ-lactams, whereas the addition of methanol as a nucleophile affords γ-amino ketones. Mechanistic studies reveal that reversible enamine formation is nonenantiodetermining and that C-C bond cleavage is both rate-limiting and

Structural biofilm resistance of carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube coatings.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a devastating complication of orthopedic implant surgeries, such as total knee and hip arthroplasties. Treatment requires additional surgeries because antibiotics have limited efficacy due to biofilm formation and resistant bacterial strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A non-pharmaceutical approach is needed, and examples of this are found in nature; dragonfly and cicada wings are antibacterial because of their nanopillar surface structure rather than their chemistry. Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube (CICNT) surfaces exh

Occupational nanosafety considerations for carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are carbon atoms arranged in a crystalline graphene lattice with a tubular morphology. CNTs exhibit high tensile strength, possess unique electrical properties, are durable, and can be functionalized. These properties allow applications as structural materials, in electronics, as heating elements, in batteries, in the production of stain-resistant fabric, for bone grafting and dental implants, and for targeted drug delivery. Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are strong, flexible fibers that are currently used to produce composite materials. Agitation can lead to aerosolized CNTs

Carbon footprint of biomass-derived activated carbon: life cycle assessment, environmental sustainability, and carbon-negative potential.

Biomass-derived activated carbon has emerged as a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil-based activated carbon owing to its renewable origin, excellent adsorption performance, and potential to support circular bioeconomy and climate mitigation strategies. However, its overall environmental sustainability depends not only on the renewable nature of biomass feedstocks but also on greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout production, utilization, regeneration, and end-of-life management. This review critically reviews the carbon footprint of biomass-derived activated carbon from a li

Copper-Catalyzed Oxidative Carbon-Carbon and/or Carbon-Heteroatom Bond Formation with O2 or Internal Oxidants.

Selective oxidation, a fundamental organic transformation of critical importance, produces value-added products from simple organic molecules. This process is extensively used to incorporate heteroatoms into carbon-based molecules, where high-valent metal salts, hypervalent halogen reagents, and peroxides are widely used as oxidants. Oxidation reactions are extremely challenging because their selectivity is hard to control and/or they form significant quantities of unwanted waste derived from the stoichiometric oxidants. Undoubtedly, the utilization of green oxidants such as molecular oxygen (

Electricity-driven carbon capture: microbial electrosynthesis of multi-carbon organic acids and chain elongation from carbon dioxide.

The rapid rise in CO2 concentrations poses long-term environmental issues, necessitating the development of effective mitigation techniques. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) shows promise technology for converting CO2 into value-added compounds. In MES, chemolithoautotrophic bacteria operate as biocatalysts, converting CO2 to organic acids in microbial electrochemical reactors. The study aimed to enrich acetogenic chemolithotrophs for CO2-to-acetic acid conversion, and chain-elongating bacteria for extending short-chain fatty acids into higher-value multi-carbon compounds. Electricity-powered

Electronic effects on reductive elimination to form carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds from palladium(II) complexes.

The electronic properties of reactive and ancillary ligands have a large impact on the rate and scope of reductive elimination reactions. The purpose of this review is to compare and discuss published data on the effect of ligand electronic properties on the rates and scope of reductive eliminations from palladium(II). An understanding of these effects is important because reductive elimination from palladium(II) is the product-forming step of a variety of catalytic processes. The scope of this review will encompass the effect of the electron-donating abilities of alkyl, aryl, amido, alkoxo, t

Organophosphine-Promoted Decarbynylative Hydrocarbenylation of the Carbon-Carbon Triple Bond.

Herein, an innovative illustration of organophosphine-promoted decarbynylative hydrocarbenylation of diynoates with 2-oxindoles has been uncovered, affording (E)-3-alkyl/aryl propynylidene/allylidene oxindoles regio- and stereoselectively through the unique C≡C bond scission of diynoates. This tandem reaction proceeded via the initial nucleophilic α-attack of phosphines on diynoates, followed by a sequential process involving proton abstraction/nucleophilic attack, H-shift, and subsequent removal of the phosphorus ylide, enabling the formation of (E)-3-alkyl/aryl propynylidene/allylidene oxind

Carbon dioxide adsorption in chemically activated carbon from sewage sludge.

UNLABELLED: In this work, sewage sludge was used as precursor in the production of activated carbon by means of chemical activation with KOH and NaOH. The sludge-based activated carbons were investigated for their gaseous adsorption characteristics using CO2 as adsorbate. Although both chemicals were effective in the development of the adsorption capacity, the best results were obtained with solid NaOH (SBA(T16)). Adsorption results were modeled according to the Langmuir and Freundlich models, with resulting CO2 adsorption capacities about 56 mg/g. The SBA(T16) was characterized for its surfac

Victim of carbon monoxide poisoning identified by carbon monoxide oximetry.

BACKGROUND: Carbon monoxide (CO) is known as a leading cause of unintentional poisoning death in many countries. Diagnosis is usually made by measuring carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), but due to the non-specific symptoms, the crucial step is considering CO poisoning. A possible solution might be screening emergency department (ED) patients. A cutaneous sensor that measures oxygen and CO saturation simultaneously could accomplish that. OBJECTIVES: We report a case in which CO-oximetry screening helped to identify CO poisoning in a patient with otherwise non-specific complaints presenting to a busy u

Intermolecular Carbon-Carbon Bond Formation by a Chorismate-Converting Enzyme.

Chorismate is an important precursor of many primary and secondary metabolites. Enzymes that can transform chorismate are therefore useful biocatalysts for constructing bioactive molecules, yet the scope of known chorismate biochemistry is limited. Here, we identify TunB, an enzyme that catalyzes an intermolecular carbon-carbon bond formation with chorismate in the absence of any cofactors. TunB is involved in the biosynthesis of tundrenone, a natural product produced by a methane-oxidizing bacterium, and was not predicted to use chorismate as a substrate on the basis of amino acid sequence ho

Plasma Electrochemistry for Carbon-Carbon Bond Formation via Pinacol Coupling.

The formation of carbon-carbon bonds by pinacol coupling of aldehydes and ketones requires a large negative reduction potential, often realized with a stoichiometric reducing reagent. Here, we use solvated electrons generated via a plasma-liquid process. Parametric studies with methyl-4-formylbenzoate reveal that selectivity over the competing reduction to the alcohol requires careful control over mass transport. The generality is demonstrated with benzaldehydes, benzyl ketones, and furfural. A reaction-diffusion model explains the observed kinetics, and ab initio calculations provide insight

An unusual carbon-carbon bond cleavage reaction during phosphinothricin biosynthesis.

Natural products containing phosphorus-carbon bonds have found widespread use in medicine and agriculture. One such compound, phosphinothricin tripeptide, contains the unusual amino acid phosphinothricin attached to two alanine residues. Synthetic phosphinothricin (glufosinate) is a component of two top-selling herbicides (Basta and Liberty), and is widely used with resistant transgenic crops including corn, cotton and canola. Recent genetic and biochemical studies showed that during phosphinothricin tripeptide biosynthesis 2-hydroxyethylphosphonate (HEP) is converted to hydroxymethylphosphona

Influence of carbon dioxide kinetics on pulmonary carbon dioxide exchange.

In the absence of erythrocytes, carbonic anhydrase (CA) localized to the pulmonary capillary endothelium catalyzes the dehydration of bicarbonate to CO2. We studied the effects of lung CA and the reactions of CO2 on CO2 excretion in isolated lungs perfused with buffer. In indicator-dilution experiments, recoveries of dissolved CO2 and acetylene (C2H2) in the venous effluent were delayed significantly compared with a vascular indicator because the gases were distributed in both the vascular and alveolar volumes. In a second group of experiments, the kinetics of CO2 excretion were monitored with
