Surgical Management of Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

The incidence of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) continues to increase. Understanding of MCC biology has advanced rapidly, with current staging providing valuable prognostic information. MCC treatment often is multidisciplinary. Surgery remains an important component in the staging and treatment, most commonly involving wide excision of the cancer and sentinel lymph node biopsy. Lymphadenectomy is used to treat nodal disease. Radiotherapy enhances locoregional control and possibly survival. Systemic therapies, in particular novel immunotherapies, may be promising in the treatment of advanced or re

Morphologic Diversity of Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and highly aggressive neuroendocrine carcinoma of unknown origin. We performed a retrospective histologic review of primary cutaneous MCCs diagnosed from 1997 to 2018 in several clinical institutions and literature review to determine the frequency of various unusual morphologic appearances of MCC. Of the 136 primary MCCs identified, intraepidermal carcinoma or epidermotropism was noted in 11/136 (8%) cases. An association with pilar cyst in 1/136 (0.7%) case, with actinic keratosis in 2/136 (1.5%) cases, with either invasive or in situ squamous cell carci

[MERKEL CELL CARCINOMA: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY].

BACKGROUND: Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer. Though rare, in recent decades its prevalence has increased, and its incidence has tripled. OBJECTIVES: To describe a cohort of MCC patients treated at a referral center in northern Israel, and to compare their characteristics and course of illness to cases reported in the literature. METHODS: A retrospective review of 18 MCC patients treated in the Plastic Surgery Department at the Rambam Health Care Campus between the years 2011-2016. Patient demographics, medical history, histological findings, systemic i

Merkel Cell Carcinoma of the Digit.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a biologically aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin. There are roughly 1500 new cases of MCC diagnosed every year in the United States, with an increased incidence over the past 15 years reaching up to 8%. Epidemiological studies show that the highest MCC incidence is seen in men older than 65 years, with a ratio of 0.23 per 10,000 among whites. Merkel cell carcinoma of the skin most commonly presents as a single, rapidly growing, flesh-colored, painless mass. Because MCC is uncommon, histopathological examination is usually delayed. Because of the high mo

[Merkel cell carcinoma in unusual location].

We present a case of Merkel cell carcinoma with buttock location at a 70 years old patient. In literature there are described about 600 observations, of which more than half located in the head and neck. Despite early diagnosis--less than five months after occurrence--a thorough exploration (ultrasonography of soft tissues, pelvi-abdominal CT, histopathological and immunohistochemical examination), correct treatment (broad surgical exeresis, local postoperative radiotherapy) and appropriate follow-up, the patient had a negative evolution. Death occurs 17 months after diagnosis by the occurrenc

Merkel cell carcinoma of the skin.

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare, aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin with a predisposition for local regional and distant spread. Radiotherapy after wide local excision has improved local control, but distant spread continues to be a significant problem. This is an update of our experience in the treatment of Merkel cell carcinoma at the University of Florida. Of 24 patients who were treated for Merkel cell carcinoma between 1984 and 1996, 18 patients were treated at the time of the initial diagnosis, and six were treated after local-regional recurrence. Of the 18 previously untreated

Merkel cell carcinoma of the scrotum.

We report a rare case of Merkel cell carcinoma arising from the scrotal skin of an 84-year-old man. The tumor was treated by wide, local excision and radiation. The man died due to extensive metastatic disease 16 months after his surgery. The natural history, histology, and pathogenesis of Merkel cell carcinoma are discussed briefly.

Merkel cell carcinoma of the ear.

All the consultants agree that, given this patient's history, a common skin tumor like squamous cell or basal cell carcinoma is unlikely. Melanoma or Merkel cell carcinoma belong in the differential. Interestingly, the consultants all suggest a biopsy of the lesion prior to other testing, and because this tumor is so accessible, a biopsy should not interfere with further testing or treatment. Drs. Weymuller and Marks would then proceed with a CT scan; Dr. Ridge favors an MRI scan. While a chest-ray is in order to rule out metastases, Dr. Weymuller also suggests immunocytochemistry. All the exp

Merkel Cell Carcinoma Masquerading as Dermatitis.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, highly aggressive neuroendocrine skin carcinoma that typically presents as a rapidly enlarging, firm, painless nodule on sun-exposed areas in elderly patients. This malignancy is characterized by high rates of local recurrence, regional spread, and distant metastasis. We report a case of a woman in her 80s who presented with an erythematous patch on the left anterior thigh, a non-sun-exposed site, initially diagnosed as inflammatory dermatitis and treated with topical corticosteroids. After two months of failed therapy and interval growth, a punch biopsy

Pleural Metastasis of Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer, often challenging to diagnose due to its morphological resemblance to other malignancies. Diagnosis is typically confirmed by immunohistochemistry (IHC), with most cases being positive for both neuroendocrine and epithelial markers, particularly the characteristic dot-like cytoplasmic pattern seen with Cytokeratin 20 (CK20). This case report describes a 68-year-old male with MCC originating in the left elbow, who developed pleural metastasis 10 months after initial diagnosis and 4 months following a pathologic com

Merkel cell carcinoma and the eye.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare cutaneous neuroendocrine tumor with a poor five-year survival rate. Yearly cases have risen nearly 350% since the early 1980s, and these are predicted to increase as the overall US population ages. MCC of the eyelid is uncommon and can be misdiagnosed as other benign inflammatory and neoplastic eyelid disorders. Although MCC of the head and neck is often more aggressive than it is at other sites, eyelid MCC shows a lower disease-specific mortality rate. A biopsy is essential for accurate diagnosis, including an immunohistochemical panel of CK20 and TTF-1,

A review of Merkel cell carcinoma.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive type of metastatic, nonmelanoma skin cancer derived from Merkel cells in the epidermis. MCC can be induced by sun exposure or via Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV) gene expression. MCV is found in most patients with MCC and is associated with a lower recurrence rate of MCC. MCC has a wide range of clinical presentations that make diagnosis challenging. Histologic examination is performed using unique markers to differentiate it from other diagnoses. This article reviews the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, histopathology, differential diagn
