A recent study hypothesized that avian-like wrist folding in quadrupedal dinosaurs could have aided their distinctive style of locomotion with semi-pronated and therefore medially facing palms. However, soft tissues that automatically guide avian wrist folding rarely fossilize, and automatic wrist folding of unknown function in extant crocodilians has not been used to test this hypothesis. Therefore, an investigation of the relative contributions of soft tissues to wrist range of motion (ROM) in the extant phylogenetic bracket of dinosaurs, and the quadrupedal function of crocodilian wrist fol

Partial arthrodesis was performed for carpal hyperextension injury in a dog. T-plate application for middle carpal and carpometacarpal arthrodesis was associated with low patient morbidity and allowed normal pet activity without clinical lameness. Radiography revealed bony healing of arthrodesed joints, reactive bone formation over the dorsal aspect of the plate, and periarticular osteophyte formation. A guarded prognosis is advised for degenerative joint disease that may lead to decreased range of motion of the antebrachiocarpal joint.

Case series summaryThe aim of the present study was to characterise the clinical presentation, radiographic findings and treatment of idiopathic carpal hyperextension (ICH) in cats. Medical records from six referral centres were retrospectively reviewed to identify cats diagnosed with ICH between 2018 and 2025. Data collected included signalment, clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, treatment approaches and outcome. The study population comprised 12 cats aged 4 months to 12 years 10 months (median 4 years 3 months) with 20 affected carpi. The age distribution showed two peaks: one in yo

Congenital limb deformities are rarely reported in the cat. The macroscopic and radiographic features of aphalangia are described in a 2-month-old male kitten showing a shortened limb that ended, at the level of the carpus, in a stump without digits. A nail was present at the level of the first phalanx and on the palmar surface only two footpads were present. The radiographs showed an absence of phalanges. The first metacarpal and the proximal and distal phalanges of digit 1 were present. The deformed metacarpal bones were reduced in length; the carpal bones were incompletely ossified. This de

Retrospective analysis of the radiographs of horses with carpal valgus, presented to the Iowa State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital from 1987-1996, were used to compare 2 methods of geometric analysis for finding the total angle of deviation. The pivot point angle method and the individual joint angle method were found to be comparable for determining the total angle of deviation. The individual joint angle method was used to analyse individual carpal joint angles and physis angle in joints with carpal valgus, as well as the changes that occurred in response to surgical correction. There is limited published data on conformational changes in the forelimbs of growing foals. This study was designed to describe the changes in conformation of the carpus and distal forelimb from birth to weaning in foals of three different breeds. Evaluation of the conformation of the carpus, fetlock, pastern and foot was carried out in 134 Thoroughbreds, 162 French Trotters and 98 Selle Français (French Warmblood) within 1 month of age and then at approximately 2 month intervals until weaning at approximately 6 months of age. The prevalence of limb deviations decreased from birth to weaning.

A 2-year-old alpaca was presented for acute onset right forelimb lameness. Clinical findings included bilateral carpal valgus (more severe in the affected forelimb) and medial instability of the right radio-carpal joint. Surgical treatment consisted of radio-carpal joint arthrodesis, which is presented as a therapeutic option for severe carpal instability secondary to injury to the supporting ligamentous structures of the carpus.

Schwannomas were diagnosed in twelve dogs and five cats at Massey University Small Animal Clinic and Hospital over a 15-year period (1977-92). A further two feline cases were reported at the Batchelar Animal Health Laboratory. In six dogs, the tumour involved nerves of the brachial plexus. Clinical signs observed in these dogs were forelimb lameness, muscle wasting and pain on movement of the affected limb or neck. Hindlimb paresis was observed in two dogs. Surgical excision of the brachial plexus tumour was attempted in one dog, leading to an 8-month remission of signs. In one dog, the tumour

A 4 mo old German shepherd dog was presented following an acute onset lameness and swelling of the thoracic limb. Clinical signs, surgical findings, and culture results were consistent with a diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis. Initial management consisted of extensive surgical debridement, wound lavage, and bandaging. Surgical closure was achieved with an axillary fold flap and distant direct single-pedicle thoracoabdominal flap. Three mo later, following deterioration of the lameness that was associated with carpal valgus, carpal subluxation, and tendinopathy of the distal radial insertion o

Fractures of the fourth carpal bone were diagnosed in 5 horses; 3 fractures were associated with fracture of the intermediate carpal bone. The diagnosis was delayed in all 5 horses, apparently because of the moderate nature of the clinical signs. Open surgical reduction with lag screw type fixation was used in all horses. Because of delayed treatment, transfixation of carpal bones (necessary for stability), and surgical trauma, degenerative joint disease with osteophyte formation occurred in all 5 horses. None of the 5 horses was able to begin or return successfully to work, although 4 of the

The influence of short-term confinement and moderate exercise on tibia development was investigated in growing pigs (36-41 kg, 10 weeks at the beginning of the study). Animals were kept for 2 weeks either in individual crates of 0.8 m(2) ('confinement', n = 4) or kept in groups of four animals in large crates of 5.6 m(2) without ('control') or with additional exercise (30 min walking at 5 days/week; 'exercise'). Bone density and morphological parameters were evaluated by computer tomography (CT). Periosteal apposition and longitudinal growth were determined after polychrome sequential labellin

A 5-year-old LaMancha goat buck presented for evaluation of a 1-week history of progressive lameness and carpal swelling in the left thoracic limb. Cytology performed on an aspirate from the left radiocarpal joint identified abundant round to oval, thickly encapsulated, extracellular yeast organisms that occasionally exhibited narrow-based budding, features compatible with Cryptococcus spp. yeast. The patient was euthanized due to poor prognosis, and a necropsy was performed. Histopathology confirmed the presence of numerous fungal yeast associated with the left radiocarpal joint. A cryptococc

Subluxation of the second carpal bone (C2) in two racing greyhounds, and luxation associated with other carpal injuries in a Staffordshire bull terrier, were diagnosed as causes of thoracic limb lameness. The clinical signs of subluxation were subtle, with local soft tissue swelling and a pain reaction on digital pressure over the dorsal aspect of C2. In contrast, the dog with a complete luxation was very lame, having marked soft tissue swelling with carpal hyperextension and valgus. Diagnosis was made by radiography. Subluxation of C2 was seen as a small, dorsally displaced opacity between th

A 9-yr-old male Basilisk lizard (Basilicus plumifrons) with a history of painful and limited mobility for approximately 4 mo, which had seemed to be more pronounced in the front limbs, was presented for necropsy. The animal had exhibited moderate weight loss and anorexia before euthanasia. Postmortem examination revealed yellow-to-white, soft-to-semifirm nodules within the periarticular fascia and musculature of the left and right shoulder joints, hip joints, and stifle joints. Several other joints, including the left and right tarsi, left and right elbow joints, and the left carpus had calcif

The diagnosis and treatment of luxation of the accessory carpal bone in a racing greyhound, and subluxation of the same bone in a lurcher, are described. The injury in the lurcher occurred in both carpi, but on separate occasions. Both dogs had severe thoracic limb lameness with marked carpal swelling. The diagnosis of luxation was obvious from carpal radiographs. The subluxations were difficult to detect on palpation, but were suspected and confirmed on exploratory surgery, which showed an avulsion of the lateral support structures of the accessory carpal bone from the distal ulna. Pancarpal

Ultrasonographic studies of canine carpal disorders are scarce and typically limited to case reports or evaluations of single structures. This prospective, single-center study characterized ultrasonographic findings in canine carpal disorders confirmed by a composite reference standard and clinical follow-up, and it assessed the diagnostic role of high-frequency musculoskeletal ultrasound in relation to radiography and selectively performed cross-sectional imaging. Forty-eight carpi in 41 dogs were evaluated. This study represents the first ultrasound case series across the spectrum of canine

CASE REPORTS: Five dogs (4 with severe carpal contracture, 1 with a chronically infected carpal joint) underwent antebrachiometacarpal arthrodesis. Excision of all carpal bones, except the accessory carpal bone, was done, either because of persistent infection or to allow the manus to be arthrodesed in a functional position. All five dogs developed varying degrees of soft tissue swelling of the surgical site following surgery. All five arthrodeses achieved complete osseous union within 4-67 weeks. The immediate postoperative distal radiometacarpal frontal plane angulation ranged from 1° to 19°

With the transition from terrestrial to aquatic habitats, cetacean forelimbs have undergone significant modifications in bone morphology and soft tissue distribution. Some, but not all, of these modifications are also demonstrated in other lineages of extant and extinct secondarily aquatic tetrapods. This study examines the ontogenetic pattern of ossification of the manus of the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), using plain film radiography. Two modifications examined are hyperphalangy (number of phalanges per digit increased beyond the typical mammalian number) and the morphology of delta-

Carpal canal syndrome, or carpal tunnel syndrome, is the most common entrapment neuropathy in humans and is caused by compression of the median nerve as it courses through the carpal canal. A similar condition has been reported in horses, however there have not been any reported cases of a dog showing lameness secondary to compression within the carpal canal. This report describes the case of a dog exhibiting lameness secondary to a lipoma within the carpal canal. Lameness improved after surgical removal of the mass. This case highlights the need to consider compression of the tendons and nerv

OBJECTIVE: To characterize biomechanical differences in gait between dogs with and without an amputated thoracic limb.
ANIMALS: Client-owned dogs (16 thoracic-limb amputee and 24 quadruped [control] dogs).
PROCEDURES: Dogs were trotted across 3 in-series force platforms. Spatial kinematic and kinetic data were recorded for each limb during the stance phase.
RESULTS: Amputees had significant increases in stance duration and vertical impulse in all limbs, compared with values for control dogs. Weight distribution was significantly increased by 14% on the remaining thoracic limb and by a combi
