Due to the highly mobile nature of the cervical spine, and the fact that most magnetic resonance imagings (MRIs) and computed tomography sca … of the studies using dMRI in CSM reported that this imaging modality is more sensitive at detecting cervical cord compression compared to routine MRIs done in a neutral position, especially with the neck in extension. Dynamic MRI was also useful to diagnose dynamic cervical cord compression after laminectomies in patients with clinical deterioration without evi …

Osteochondromas are the most common benign tumors of the bone. They occur in young adolescent patients and are frequently located in the metaphyses of the long bones; they do not grow after skeletal maturity. The incidence of osteochondroma in the spine is reported to be rare. Moreover, patients with spinal osteochondroma who develop symptoms of myelopathy are extremely rare. We report the case of an 8-year-old girl who experienced myelopathy due to spinal compression of the cervical osteochondroma. This case suggests that if a cartilage cap is observed on the spinal canal with magnetic resona

Cervical angina is defined as chest pain resembling true cardiac angina but originating from disorders of the cervical spine. Cervical angina is caused by cervical spondylosis in most cases. A 66-year-old man presented with bilateral arm palsy after chest pain resembling angina pectoris. Neurological examination revealed motor and sensory disturbances of the C7 to T1 level, and magnetic resonance imaging showed a hyperintense spinal cord lesion on T2-weighted imaging. Spinal cord infarction was diagnosed. Severe sinus bradycardia was identified on admission, and improved over the course of 5 w

The risk of sustaining a stinger, CCN, or a more serious catastrophic injury to the cervical spine increases with increasing stenosis. The RR of a player sustaining a second stinger or CCN increases exponentially when compared with the risk of a player sustaining an initial stinger or CCN. Intravenous steroids have no role in the management of stingers or CCN. Players who remain symptomatic after a stinger, players with persistently abnormal diagnostic studies after a stinger, and any player who experiences a CCN should be excluded from further participation in contact sports.

We examined 19 children under 10 years of age with cervical spinal cord injury using clinical records and radiographs. The children were divided into two groups: Eight had immediate and complete spinal cord injury, and 11 had incomplete or partial spinal cord injury. Those with complete spinal cord injury were injured in motor vehicle accidents with a proximal spinal cord injury. Eighty-eight percent had cervical spine fractures/instability with a distraction pattern of injury. Half had associated trauma. The mortality rate was 25%, and those who survived showed no neurologic improvement. Most

A case is reported of the so-called Tethered Cervical Spinal Cord Syndrome presenting as multiradicular pain on an upper limb in a 45-year old woman, in whom spina bifida occulta (C6) was associated with an intramedullary lipoma, intradural fibrous adhesions and the fusion of the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae. Surgical release of the tether was ineffective, and the patient underwent a posterior rhizotomy for pain relief. The clinical and maldevelopmental aspects of this most uncommon form of spinal cord tethering are discussed briefly.

A case of congenital tethered cervical spinal cord is presented in a young adult. Metrizamide computerized tomography was the most useful imaging technique for identifying the tethered spinal cord. Intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials correlated well with clinical improvement following surgery.

It has been established that coordinated arm and leg (A&L) cycling facilitates corticospinal drive and modulation of cervico-lumbar connecti … uring arm cycling (without tSCS) relative to arms static (without tSCS). Interestingly, tSCS of the cervical cord with arms static significantly suppressed the soleus H-reflex (-22.9%), whereas tSCS over the lumbar cord did not suppress the soleus H-reflex (-3.8%). The combination of arm cycling with cervical or lumbar tSCS did not yield additional suppression …

A case of schwannoma of the cervical spinal cord presenting with cervical angina is reported. A 49-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with severe chest pain, cold sweats, and unconsciousness. Extensive cardiac examination showed no abnormal findings. Neurological deficits were muscular weakness and atrophy of the left arm, bilateral hypersthesia of the arms, and hyporeflexia of the left biceps. MRI revealed a tumor in the left side of the spinal canal between C4 and C5. The diagnosis was neurinoma of the left nerve root in C5. The tumor was completely removed surgically by laminectomy.

BACKGROUND: Disc herniations are only reported in few case reports as a rare cause of acute spinal ischemia. A surgical treatment has not be … plete recovery after two months in correspondence with the normalization in the control MRI scan of cervical cord.
CONCLUSIONS: Assumedly our patient suffered from a partial anterior spinal artery syndrome, possibly caused by a disc herniation-related compression that was reversible following surgery. This was accompanied by a complete resolution of spinal cor …

The primary aim of this study is to assess the viability of employing multimodal radiomics techniques for distinguishing between cervical spinal cord injury and spinal cord concussion in cervical magnetic resonance imaging. This is a multicenter study involving 288 patients from a major medical center as the training group, and 75 patients from two other medical centers as the testing group. Data regarding the presence of spinal cord injury symptoms and their recovery status within 72 h were documented. These patients underwent sagittal T1-weighted and T2-weighted imaging using cervical magnet

The study aimed to determine whether asymptomatic rats with cervical spinal cord compression (CSCC) experience more severe cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) compared with rats without CSCC under the same degree of minor trauma. Four weeks after the polyvinyl alcohol-polyacrylamide hydrogel was implanted into the C5 vertebral canal, asymptomatic rats were selected based on locomotor function score. Mild cervical SCI was subsequently established based on CSCC. The motor function, morphology, neuron loss, myelin destruction, nerve cell apoptosis, microglia activation, and neuroinflammation were e

Furthermore, 56 traumatic spinal cord events were found before the diagnosis of cervical cord encroachment was established, with no correlation to either type of compression (discogenic vs osteophytic). In conclusion, the risk of spinal cord injury after minor trauma of the cervical spine in patients with ASCCE appeared to be low in our coho …

STUDY DESIGN: Congenital spinal stenosis has been demonstrated to contribute to cervical cord neurapraxia after cervical spinal cord injury in adult athletes. A sagittal canal diameter <14 mm and/or a Torg ratio (sagittal diameter of the spinal canal: midcervical sagittal vertebral body diameter) of <0.8 are indicative of significant cervical spinal stenosis. Although sports-related cervical spine injuries are common in children, the role of congenital cervical stenosis in the etiology of these injuries remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: The authors measured the sagittal canal diameter and the Torg…

BACKGROUND: While cervical dystonia (CD) is predominantly viewed as a disorder of brain-based motor network dysfunction, chronic dystonic head and neck posturing may affect the upper cervical spinal cord, a structure that has been largely overlooked, partly due to the lack of imaging protocols optimized for the craniovertebral junction.
OBJECTIVE: To assess cross-sectional area (CA) and cord eccentricity (CE) of the upper cervical spinal cord at C1-C3 in patients with CD, compared with healthy controls (HC), and to examine their longitudinal stability over a period of 6.2 years.
METHODS: 37

We herein describe a 37-year-old man who developed cervical flexion myelopathy 11 years after suffering a cervical spinal cord injury. Cervical magnetic resonance imaging 11 years after the accident demonstrated atrophy and hyperintense lesions at the C6 and C7 levels in the cervical cord with an abnormal alignment of the vertebrae. In the neck flexion position, an anterior shift of the cervical cord was evident. Our patient's condition suggests that an abnormal alignment of the cervical spine and spinal cord injury due to a traumatic accident could be risk factors in the subsequent developmen…
