Methanol causes posteriorization of cervical vertebrae in mice.

Inhalation of methanol by pregnant mice before gestation day nine (gd 9) produces fetal skeletal alterations, principally in the cervical re … xamination of cartilaginous and ossified vertebral and rib characteristics, and in selected fetuses cervical vertebrae were disarticulated for more detailed analysis. Observations indicative of methanol-induced homeotic transformations were as follows: [tabular data: see abstract volume] Examination of disarticulated vertebrae revealed foramina and other distinguish …

Transoral-transpharyngeal approach to the upper cervical vertebrae.

The classical operative approaches to the cervical spine include the posterior one and the anterior exposure along the sternomastoid muscle. However, neither of these are helpful in exposing the upper cervical vertebrae, especially the odontoid process, atlas, and axis. We have used the transoral-transpharyngeal exposure for lesions of the odontoid process and upper (first to third) cervical vertebrae in six patients. The pathologic processes included rheumatoid disease and fracture of the cervical vertebrae, suspected tumor with compression of the spinal cord, basilar invagination, and compre…

Monostotic fibrous dysplasia of a cervical vertebra.

Fibrous dysplasia has been frequently reported to involve the spine in the polyostotic form, but only rarely in the monostotic form of the disease. The present case demonstrates monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the fourth cervical vertebra. We present the plain radiographic, CT-scan, scintigraphy and histologic examinations. C3-C4 posterior and anterior arthrodesis was performed. The post-operative follow-up was satisfactory.

Radiographic profile of the first cervical vertebra.

Lateral cephalographs from 220 normal adolescent white orthodontic patients, and of individuals with craniofacial dysostosis and oculodento-osseous dysplasia were studied. Variations were observed in the morphology of the posterior margins of the superior articular processes, vertebral artery canals being present in 8%. Posterior arch dehiscence was found in eight individuals, including seven cases in the midline. Three patients had accessory ossicles above the posterior arch of the atlas, and two showed evidence of fusion of the second and third cervical vertebrae. The profile of the atlas wa…

[Prediction of recovery from dislocation of the cervical vertebrae (whiplash injury of the cervical vertebrae) with initial assessment of psychosocial variables].

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the predictive relationship between psychosocial factors and the course of recovery in patients with whiplash injury. A non-selected sample of 117 subjects satisfying to a clear definition of the syndrome was assessed early after trauma (mean 7.4 +/- 4.2 days) and again at 3, 6, and 12 months. Initial evaluation included subjective complaints (including timing of symptom onset and initial pain intensity) and a large number of psychosocial factors (e.g., self-ratings of well-being, personal and family history, personality traits, and cognitive

CSF bone cyst in a cervical vertebra.

A 43 year male patient presented with neck pain, upper limb paraesthesia and right foot weakness. A MRI scan revealed a bone cyst involving C4 spinous process, lamina, pedicles and the posterior part of the vertebral body causing focal spinal stenosis. A C4 laminectomy and C3-C5 lateral mass screw fixation was done. Intra-operatively the cyst was found to contain CSF with an associated dural defect. A CSF cervical vertebral cyst has not been previously reported in the literature. The clinical presentation, radiological features and management of this CSF vertebral cyst is discussed.

[Strategy of the treatment for dislocation of cervical vertebra].

OBJECTIVE: To study the strategy of the treatment for dislocation of cervical vertebra. METHODS: The clinical data of 39 cases with dislocation of cervical vertebra were analyzed. Among them,29 were male and 10 were female. The average age was 40 years old (range from 6 to 74 years old). Segment of dislocation: 15 cases in C(1,2), 1 case in C(3,4), 9 cases in C(4,5), 9 cases in C(5,6), 5 cases in C(6,7). Spinal injury according to Frankel grade, 9 cases were A grade,8 were B, 5 were C, 8 were D, 8 were E, 1 case had radicular symptom. Thirty-two cases were early and rapidly treated with tract

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the seventh cervical vertebra.

Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare benign bone tumor representing less than 0.5% of all bone tumors. It commonly involves the long tubular bones. Involvement of the spine is rare. A 35-year-old man presented with history of neck pain, restriction of neck movements, pain and numbness along the medial aspect of the left forearm and weakness with wasting of the left hand. A presumptive diagnosis of a bony tumor such as an aneurysmal bone cyst or a giant cell tumor involving the seventh vertebral body was made on plain X-rays, MRI and bone scan. He underwent C7 central corpectomy, incomplete intrales

Fibrous dysplasia of the first cervical vertebra.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the first cervical vertebra. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Fibrous dysplasia is a disorder of bone development of unknown etiology in which cancellous bone is replaced with fibrous tissue, resulting in expansion of the bone. The disease presents in either a monostotic or polyostotic form. Although fibrous dysplasia can involve any bone in the body, vertebral involvement is quite unusual. METHODS: A case of monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the first cervical vertebra is presented. RESULTS: A 53 year-old

[Computer tomography in injuries of the cervical vertebrae].

32 patients with traumatic injuries of the cervical spine were investigated by CT. All patients were initially examined by plain films. CT was definitely superior to conventional radiology in compressive fractures of vertebral bodies. In flexion-extension injuries CT was useful showing fractures of the posterior elements in great detail. Conventional tomography was superior to CT in patients with complex dislocations of vertebral bodies. In the absence of fracture CT failed to detect disruptions of ligaments, which were readily shown by functional examination.
