Mucoadhesive nanoparticles may disrupt the protective human mucus barrier by altering its microstructure.

Mucus secretions typically protect exposed surfaces of the eyes and respiratory, gastrointestinal and female reproductive tracts from foreign entities, including pathogens and environmental ultrafine particles. We hypothesized that excess exposure to some foreign particles, however, may cause disruption of the mucus barrier. Many synthetic nanoparticles are likely to be mucoadhesive due to hydrophobic, electrostatic or hydrogen bonding interactions. We therefore sought to determine whether mucoadhesive particles (MAP) could alter the mucus microstructure, thereby allowing other foreign particl

Ultrasonographic assessment of endocervix and cervical mucus in ovulatory menstrual cycles.

OBJECTIVE: In addition to the routinely used methods to evaluate the menstrual cycle, a new method will be described, assessing the aspect of the endocervix and the presence of cervical mucus by transvaginal ultrasonography. STUDY DESIGN: 36 healthy female volunteers with regular menstrual cycles participated in the study. Transvaginal ultrasonography was performed every other day until ovulation was observed, assessing the diameter of the largest ovarian follicle, endometrial thickness, the aspect of the endocervix, and the presence of cervical mucus. On the same days serum hormone concentra

[Blue naevus of the cervix. 3 case histories (author's transl)].

Anatomo-pathological features of 3 cases of blue naevi of the cervix are presented and discussed together with the literature. Blue naevi of the cervix are localised in the chorion of the endocervical mucus and sometimes even in a polyp, and can be multiple. They are different from benign melanosis or melanocytes which are found in the basal portion of the malpighian epithelium of the exocervix or the vagina. The blue naevus and benign melanosis can rarely give rise to primitive malignant melanomas of the cervix.

The role of the cervix in fertility: is it time for a reappraisal?

Knowledge regarding the role of the cervix in fertility has expanded considerably over the past 20 years and in this article, we propose that it is now time for its function to be reappraised. First, we review the anatomy of the cervix and the vaginal ecosystem that it inhabits. Then, we examine the physiology and the role of the cervical mucus. The ongoing mystery of the exact mechanism of the sperm-cervical mucus interaction is reviewed and the key players that may unlock this mystery in the future are discussed. The soluble and cellular biomarkers of the lower female genital tract which are

Sperm transport in the female reproductive tract.

At coitus, human sperm are deposited into the anterior vagina, where, to avoid vaginal acid and immune responses, they quickly contact cervical mucus and enter the cervix. Cervical mucus filters out sperm with poor morphology and motility and as such only a minority of ejaculated sperm actually enter the cervix. In the uterus, muscular contractions may enhance passage of sperm through the uterine cavity. A few thousand sperm swim through the uterotubal junctions to reach the Fallopian tubes (uterine tubes, oviducts) where sperm are stored in a reservoir, or at least maintained in a fertile sta

The underlying cause of cervical cancer in oral contraceptive users may be related to cervical mucus changes.

Oral contraceptives (OCs) remain among the most effective reversible methods of birth control available today, providing almost 100% effectiveness with an impressively high margin of safety and other important health benefits. However, concerns have been raised about the role that the hormones in OCs might play in the pathogenesis of cervical cancer. Evidence shows that long-term use of OCs (five or more years) may be associated with an increased risk of cancer of the cervix. The mechanism of increased risk of cervical cancer in OCs users has long been debated, and remains uncertain. Our hypot

Persistent infertility in ewes after prolonged exposure to oestradiol-17 beta.

Merino ewes were treated with implants which released 300 micrograms oestradiol-17 beta per day or 5 mg progesterone per day, or both, for 9 months (Months 1-9), and after an 11-month intermission were treated again for 6 months (Months 20-26). Ewes were run with rams at Months 16, 28 and 40. Fertility was not affected by the first exposure period, but the second exposure to oestradiol reduced the fertility of ewes at both subsequent mating periods. Affected ewes returned to service more frequently (P less than 0.01) and were less likely to conceive (P less than 0.05). After mating, a normal p

The cervical factor in infertility: diagnosis and treatment.

One hundred and fourteen women with an abnormal fractional postcoital test (PCT) and no other demonstrable cause of female infertility were included in this study. By utilizing the results of the postcoital test, it was possible to divide the patients into three major groups: (1) those with anatomical cervical defect, (2) those with abnormal cervical mucus, and (3) those with an abnormal PCT and normal cervical mucus. In the latter group the abnormality was due to either an abnormal male factor or an undetermined factor. The treatment used in all cases was either steroidal (diethylstibestrol)

Cervical mucus viscoelasticity and sperm velocity are correlated and concentration-dependent in Vitro.

BACKGROUND: Mucus in the endocervix serves as fertility gatekeeper in the reproductive tract through hormonally regulated changes in biophysical properties. Cervical mucus can thicken to prevent ascension of sperm into the upper reproductive tract or thin to permit fertilization. Current reproductive studies of mucus viscoelastic properties rely on subjective visual appraisal of cervical mucus changes. Our goal was to use particle tracking microrheology (PTMR) to objectively assess cervical mucus viscoelastic properties and associate these measurements with in vitro measures of sperm velocity.

Cervical mucus and contraception: what we know and what we don't.

OBJECTIVES: Cervical mucus varies in response to both natural and artificial hormonal changes. It is commonly believed that cervical mucus thinning is associated with normal fertility and that progestogen-induced thickening is an essential contraceptive mechanism. This review aims to broadly summarize our current knowledge about cervical mucus from both a clinical and basic research perspective. STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed published literature pertinent to cervical mucus and contraception across scientific disciplines. We first present the most current understanding of the composition of cervic

Comparing endocervical mucus proteome of humans and rhesus macaques.

PURPOSE: Endocervical mucus changes play a key role in regulating fertility throughout the menstrual cycle and in response to hormonal contraceptives. Non-human primates (NHP) provide the most translational animal model for reproductive tract studies, as they have hormonally-regulated menstrual cycles and mucus changes, similar to women. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We used TMT labelling and LC-LC/MS to compare the proteins found in the mucus of the rhesus macaque to the mucus of the human endocervix. Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD021710. RESULTS: We found 3048 total prot

Actinomyces in the vaginas of women with and without intrauterine contraceptive devices.

Either Actinomyces israeli, A. naeslundii, or Arachnia propionica was found, by immunofluorescence studies, in cervicovaginal mucus from 36% of 50 women. One or more of these organisms were found in a surprising 27% of those with neither intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) nor intravaginal foreign bodies. The only common finding was abundant vaginal mucus, and no clinical features were more serious than vaginal itching, odor, or vague discomfort. Among those women who harbored actinomycetes, the average duration of continuous IUD use was 5.3 years; the comparable figure for those with no
