OBJECTIVE: To quantify maternal risk associated with multiple cesarean sections (CSs) and determine whether the third CS defines a threshold for increased morbidity.
METHODS: From January 1997 to January 2002, the clinical records of 3191 women who were delivered by CS at our referral maternity center were examined for selected indicators of maternal morbidity. The women were assigned to groups based on number of CSs and the frequency of each indicator was determined. A composite score for each indicator among women grouped by number of consecutive CSs was then derived to compare risk between…

BACKGROUND: Caesarean delivery may cause serious complications; haemorrhage is one of them.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: By the use of information registered in a database in 1997-99 at Rogaland Central Hospital, 978 cesarean deliveries were investigated.
RESULTS: Mean bleeding was 460 ml. 203 (20.8%) women had a blood loss of more than 500 ml and 17 (1.7%) of more than 1,500 ml. Multiple pregnancies, acute caesarean, general anaesthesia, increasing age of mother, high birth-weight, low gestational age, placenta praevia, abruptio placentae and arrest of delivery progression were associated with inc

The purpose of this prospective study is to assess the possibility of myomectomy during CS as a routine method. The material includes 21 cases of myomectomy during CS. 162 consecutive CS without myomectomy are control group for hemorrhage during the operation. The myomectomy is accomplish according classical technique. Our data show that the myomas and pregnancy is found mainly in women after 30 years of age and is prevalent in nulliparas (70%). Single myomas were found in 85% of cases, 63% located in the corpus uteri and 46% of all myomas are confined to the myometrium. Related to the isthmus

Post-operative infectious morbidity was recorded in 390 patients who delivered by Caesarean section. The patients were observed closely while in hospital. Upon leaving the hospital, each was given a questionnaire, which was answered by 350 (89.7%). 10% of the patients had experienced post-operative infections, the most frequent being infections of the urinary tract or of wounds. There was no significant difference in post-operative infectious morbidity in the case of elective as against emergency Caesarean section. This may have been due to the use of prophylactic antibiotics in many cases of

Despite improvements in medical and surgical techniques, complications are not unusual in cesarean sections and may, in some cases, be life-threatening. Complications affecting the mother can be divided schematically into 3 groups: immediate surgical complications essentially represented by hemorrhages usually involving local factors (tearing of lower segment, placentation disorders), and anesthetic complications; secondary post-operative complications, dominated by the most common infections and occasionally very severe cases of thromboembolism; late complications involving weakening of the u…

A retrospective analysis was made of 186 consecutive primary cesarean sections performed on patients at high risk for infection to determine whether extraperitoneal cesarean section would have decreased the incidence of infections and other complications. Women who theoretically would have benefited most from extraperitoneal cesarean section were not candidates for the procedure because of technical reasons, while those who would have been candidates for the procedure did very well despite the fact that the procedure was not done. Except for somen with severe toxemia, prophylactic antibiotics …

OBJECTIVE: Based on a comparison of the clinical indications for cesarean section (CS) in two Danish counties and a review of the literature regarding this issue the aim of this study was to discuss possible explanations for variations in CS rates in twin pregnancies. The comparison of indications for CS in twin pregnancies was made between two Danish counties, one with a high and one with a low overall CS rate in twin deliveries, taking into account the distribution of parity, mother's age, gestational age at birth, and birth weight.
DESIGN: A population based, historic follow-up study based…

BACKGROUND: Jenny dystocia occurs very rarely and is associated mainly with postural defects due to long fetal extremities. However, the management of dystocia in equines is relatively difficult compared with that in other large animals. Owing to the absence of well-described published papers on cesarean section in donkeys, this condition remain life-threatening after unsuccessful surgical intervention.
PATIENT PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old Jenny with a difficult birth due to a previous car accident presented for 3 consecutive years at different stages of labor onset. Upon early presentation, th…

Cesarean section (CS) is a common surgical procedure worldwide. The anesthesiologist is responsible, together with obstetrician and neonatologist, for safe perioperative management. A continuum of risk exists for urgent CS. The decision-to-delivery interval is an important audit tool, to ensure international standards are upheld and good outcomes for mother and neonate are achieved. Urgent CS may be performed under either GA or RA, with benefits and risks attributable to each. Specific clinical scenarios require an individualized approach to anesthesia, including hemorrhage, hypertensive disor…

The journal of maternal-fetal & neonatal medicine : the official journal of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine, the Federation of Asia and Oceania Perinatal Societies, the International Society of Perinatal Obstetricians2016eng
Cesarean sections (CS) have greatly increased and many reasons are often evoked. Safer anesthetics and surgical procedures have rendered CS a popular choice for both professionals and mothers alike. CS on maternal request, for nonmedical reasons, is the subject of scientific, legal and ethical dispute. We shall address the CS issues, primarily, from the pediatrician's point of view. The immediate neonatal problems of the more mature neonate are well recognized. For preterm birth, contradictory results on mid- and long-term outcomes do not confirm the earlier reports on neonatal advantages of C…
