Particles were generated from the detonation of simulated radiological dispersal devices (RDDs) using non-radioactive CsCl powder and explosive C4. The physical and chemical properties of the resulting particles were characterized. Two RDD simulation tests were conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory: one of the simulated RDDs was positioned 1m above a steel plate and the other was partially buried in soil. Cesium-137, becoming a more readily available ionizing gamma radiation source for laboratory use, was shown to effectively attenuate Schistosoma mansoni cercariae for vaccine production. In parallel comparison studies with the murine model, cesium-137 attenuated cercariae consistently afforded better (P greater than 0.05) protection than did the cobalt-60 prepared vaccine. Dose-response data indicated that the optimal total irradiation with cesium-137 was between 45 and 50 Krad.

We describe the CT findings in the brain of a woman with pathologically proven elevated levels of blood and tissue cesium. The 42-year-old woman had been receiving cesium chloride as a non-mainstream treatment for metastatic breast carcinoma. A procedure for the rapid isolation of mucin glycoprotein by density gradient centrifugation in cesium trifluoroacetate (CsTFA) is described. The separation of mixtures of rat tracheobronchial mucin, DNA, hyaluronic acid, and bovine serum albumin in CsTFA gradients was superior to that in cesium bromide gradients. Inclusion of guanidinium chloride or urea in the gradient had no influence on the separation obtained. Detection of breast disease at an early stage was evaluated with 131CsCl. The tissue distribution study showed that malignant tumors could be distinguished from both benign and normal tissue by the degree of 131Cs concentration. However, the external counting method was not sensitive enough to warrant general application to patients with a suspected malignant tumor of the breast. False-positive breast study findings using radionuclides, such as 131CsCl, require close follow-up study in view of possible malignant changes in benign disease of the breast.

PURPOSE: Management of brain metastases (BM) that recur after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) (rBM) is challenging. We reviewed our experience with resection with Cs-131 collagen tile brachytherapy for rBM.

Two novel layer structure compounds, Cs2HgSb4S8 and Cs2Hg2Sb2Se6, were synthesized in organic solvent under solvothermal conditions. The Cs2HgSb4S8 is formed of [HgSb4S8]2- ribbons and S atoms by corner sharing. The Cs2Hg2Sb2Se6 is made up of [SbHg2Se6]5- ribbon and disorder trigonal-pyramidal SbSe3 by sharing μ3-Se. Neuronal apoptosis plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, and neuroprotective agents targeting apoptotic signaling could have therapeutic use.
