A number of epidemiological studies have suggested that diets rich in whole grains are linked to lower cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and mortality. Quinoa, a pseudo-cereal, is included in the “whole grain” category but the effects of quinoa consumption in humans is not widely studied. Our aim was to undertake a dietary intervention study to investigate the effects of daily consumption of quinoa-enriched bread (providing 20 g quinoa flour) on CVD risk markers compared with a 100% refined wheat bread control. Thirty-seven healthy overweight men (35⁻70 years, body mass index >25 k

Mining, smelting, land applications of sewage sludge, the use of fungicides containing copper (Cu), and other human activities have led to widespread soil enrichment and contamination with Cu and potentially toxic conditions. Biochar (BC) can adsorb several substances, ranging from herbicides to plant-inhibiting allelochemicals. However, the range of potential beneficial effects on early-stage plant growth with regard to heavy metal toxicity is largely unexplored. We investigated the ameliorating properties of a forestry-residue BC under Cu toxicity conditions on early plant growth. Young quin

CYP86A1 encodes a fatty acid ω-hydroxylase that is required for suberin monomer biosynthesis and plays an essential role in root suberization in Arabidopsis, rice and tomato. However, whether CYP86A1 function is conserved in Chenopodium quinoa, a typical halophyte, remains unclear. In this study, we identified two CYP86A1 homologs from quinoa, CqCYP86A1a and CqCYP86A1b, both of which were primarily expressed in quinoa roots and highly induced by salt stress. Further analysis showed that overexpression of either CqCYP86A1a or CqCYP86A1b completely rescued the defective root suberization phenoty…

Single channel performance and deactivation currents have been analyzed in the presence of cation channel blockers to reveal pharmacological properties of the slow-activating (SV) cation-selective ion channel in the vacuolar membrane (tonoplast) isolated from suspension cells of Chenopodium rubrum L. At a holding potential of -100 mV, the SV channel showed half-maximal inhibition with 20 mM tetraethylammonium (TEA), 7 microM 9-amino-acridine, 6 microM (+)-tubocurarine, 300 nM quinacrine, and 35 microM quinine, respectively. The SV channel is also blocked by charybdotoxin (20 nM at -80 mV) but …

The allotetraploid crop quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) accumulates red/violet betacyanins, which function as vital stress-mitigating antioxidants. We investigated the genetic basis of red/green variegation observed in the aerial organs of the P0429 accession. We demonstrated that this color mosaic is primarily localized to epidermal bladder cells (EBCs), with red EBCs accumulating betacyanin levels ~ 50-fold higher than colorless EBCs. Cell-type-specific RNA-sequencing of EBCs identified the cytochrome P450 gene Cqu0091301 (CYP76ADα) as the dominant and rate-limiting factor, exhibiting strong upr…

Soil salinity poses a severe threat to global food security, making the halophytic crop Chenopodium quinoa a vital model for sustainable agriculture. While quinoa is known for its extreme salt tolerance, the molecular mechanisms integrating stress perception with metabolic adaptation remain poorly defined. This study employs a multi-level approach, integrating morphological, physiological, biochemical, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses, to dissect the complex adaptation strategies across eight advanced quinoa lines. Morphological and physiological screening identified three distinct sur…

In natural environments, plants are continuously exposed to multiple abiotic stresses, such as high salinity and excess ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation. While responses to individual stresses are well understood, less is known about their combined impact. Here, we treated quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) seedlings with salt (0 and 200 mm NaCl) under either photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) or PAR supplemented with UV-B radiation (313 nm, 1 h/d, 1.71 W/m2) to investigate their response to combined salt and UV-B stress. While salinity had minimal effects on plant growth, it decreased stomatal co…

Antiviral proteins (AVPs) named CAP-I and CAP-II purified from the leaves of Chenopodium album cv Pusa Bathua-1 induced systemic resistance against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and sunnhemp rosette virus (SRV) in both hypersensitive as well as systemic hosts. An increased accumulation of two polypeptides (approximately 17 kDa and approximately 26 kDa) was observed in untreated upper leaves of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba plants whose basal leaves were treated with CAP-I/CAP-II. Both AVPs exhibited ribosomal RNA N-glycosidase activity on 28S rRNA of tobacco leaves and also caused in vitro degradation …

Quinoa is an important crop for food security and food sovereignty in Ecuador. In this study, we evaluated the nutritional value, bioactive compounds, and antinutrient compounds of leaves and grains of the Ecuadorian quinoa variety Tunkahuan, and we identified significant differences between the nutrient content in the leaves and grains. The quinoa leaves presented a higher protein content than the grains, as well as inorganic nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc. Both the grains and leaves had an appreciable phenolic content. In addition, the quinoa grains presented a higher

Using the patch-clamp technique, we studied the action of charybdotoxin which blocks Ca(2+)-activated large-conductance K+ channels in animal tissue on the slow-activating (SV), Ca(2+)-activated cation channel in the vacuolar membrane of suspension-cells of Chenopodium rubrum L. The toxin reversibly reduced the vacuolar current with EC50 approximately 20 nM suggesting structural similarities between ion channels in animal and plant membranes.
