Hydrogen Analysis by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.

The detection of hydrogen in complex gas mixtures is essential for many applications. Conventional approaches such as gas chromatography (GC) with thermal conductivity detection (TCD) and residual gas analyzers (RGAs) face significant limitations: TCD exhibits poor response when helium is used as a carrier gas, whereas RGAs lack chromatographic separation, preventing reliable quantification of hydrogen because of interference from other species. Traditional GC methods rely on dual-column configurations with packed or molecular-sieve porous layer open tubular (PLOT) columns to separate hydrogen

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of catechol estrogens.

Catecholestrogens (CCEs), namely 2- or 4-hydroxyestradiol and hydroxyestrone, are highly polar, reactive, and extremely labile estrogen metabolites in many experimental conditions. For these reasons, indirect assay methods mainly have been used. Some experimental evidence suggests that CCEs are synthesized and biologically active mostly in target cells. At this level, unfortunately, the indirect assays cannot be used. We present a method of gas chromatographic/mass spectral (GC/MS) analysis for the identification of individual CCEs; the major fragmentation ions of authentic estrogen standards

[Analysis of preservatives in cosmetics by gas chromatography].

The wide bore capillary column HP-1701(15 m x 0.53 mm i.d. x 1.0 micron) has been used to analyze benzyl alcohol, methyl-p-hydroxy benzoate, ethyl-p-hydroxy benzoate, propyl-p-hydroxy benzoate, and butyl-p-hydroxy benzoate in cosmetics. The results showed that these preservatives could be separated with the capillary column completely and their peaks were not interfered with those of other components in cosmetics. The detection limits were 13 ng, 70 ng, 70 ng, 100 ng and 100 ng respectively and the linear range was 50 ng-500 ng.

Evaluation of Gas Chromatography Columns with Radially Elongated Pillars as Second-Dimension Columns in Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography.

The present study investigated the use of a dedicated gas chromatography (GC) column (L = 70 cm, 75 μm deep, and 6.195 mm wide) with radially elongated pillars (REPs) as the second column in a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × μGC) system. Three stationary phases [apolar polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), medium polar room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) based on monocationic phosphonium, and polar polyethylene glycol (PEG-1000)] have been coated using the static method at constant pressure or using an original vacuum pressure program (VPP) from 400 to 4 mbar. The best efficienc

Radio-gas chromatography of chromium (III) hexafluoroacetylacetonate.

A method has been developed for the determination of trace levels of chromium by radio-gas chromatography. The technique involves conversion of radioactive 51Cr to a metal chelate compound, using C2H5I131 as an internal standard, and detection of radioactivity of 51Cr in the chelate by a flow system surrounding a Nal(TI) scintillation detector. The detection limit is found to be as low as 10(-12) g. From the observed radio-chromatogram it can be shown that the method is selective and free from interference.

Characterisation of beeswax in works of art by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry procedures.

Pyrolysis (Py) with in situ derivatisation with hexamethyldisilazane-gas chroma-break tography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry procedure based on microwave-assisted saponification were used to identify the organic components in small sized beeswax samples. With the latter procedure quantitative recoveries can be made and hydrocarbons, alcohols and omega-1-diols in the neutral fraction, and fatty acids and omega-1-hydroxy acids in the acidic fraction can be efficiently separated and detected. Both procedures were used to characterise a wax anatomic sculpture

Multidimensional gas chromatography using microfluidic switching and low thermal mass gas chromatography for the characterization of targeted volatile organic compounds.

Volatile organic compounds such as light hydrocarbons, dienes, and aromatic compounds are often encountered in the manufacturing and processing environments of chemical and petrochemical segments. These compounds need to be closely monitored for process optimization, plant maintenance and industrial hygiene purposes. A high throughput analytical approach has been successfully developed and implemented for the accurate measurement of fourteen commonly encountered analytes. The approach incorporates a recently introduced 5-port planar microfluidic device configured for use as a Deans switch for

Comprehensive two-dimensional countercurrent chromatography × gas chromatography characterization of Artemisia argyi essential oil.

A comprehensive two-dimensional (2D) countercurrent chromatography (CCC) × gas chromatography (GC) was investigated for characterization of chemical constituents of Artemisia argyi essential oil, and orthogonality for the 2D chromatographic system was evaluated. A solvent system composed of n-hexane/acetonitrile/methanol (2:2:1, v/v/v) was selected for first dimensional separation of Artemisia argyi essential oil. Then all CCC fractions were analyzed by GC, which provided a wealth of information regarding the composition of the essential oil. Visualization of chemical compositions obtained fro

Analysis of triacylglycerols by combined high-performance liquid chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography.

A method for the analysis of the triacylglycerols from animal and human adipose tissue has been developed by combining high-performance liquid chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography (HPLC) and (GLC). Following isolation by thin-layer chromatography, the triacylglycerols are chromatographed by HPLC on a 5-micron Spherisorb ODS column with a gradient of 45 to 60% 2-propanol in acetonitrile as the mobile phase. Fractions eluted from the column are collected at intervals ranging from 0.2 to 1.0 min, and the triacylglycerols present are then trans-esterified prior to analysis of the resulting
