Chromosome aberrations among the Yanomamma Indians.

The chromosomes of leucocytes cultured from the peripheral blood of 49 primitive Yanomama Indians of Venezuela were studied to determine the types and frequencies of aberrations in a human population not exposed to the same exogenous agents as civilized man. In all but one instance, 100 cells per individual were scored. In 13 cases, we found one or more cells with multiple complex breaks and rearrangements, represented by tetracentric, tricentric, and numerous dicentric chromosomes. From the standpoint of chromosomal damage, these cells are among the most abnormal cells yet described in vivo i

Chromosome aberrations in a schizophrenia population.

Cytogenetic abnormalities with schizophrenia may provide a valuable clue to the identification of target loci and successful search for major genes. We have performed chromosomal examinations by using the GTG banding technique on 134 schizophrenics. In 43 patients (32%), random numerical and structural aberrations were detected. Structural aberrations predominated and usually consisted of deletions and inversion of various chromosomes. Numerical changes were present in one or two cells in 14 cases including trizomy 21, marker and acentric chromosomes, and 47,XXY. The seven cases with pericentr

Numerical chromosome aberrations in human neoplasia.

Cases with a simple gain or loss of one chromosome as the sole cytogenetic change were retrieved from a computerized registry of chromosome aberrations in human neoplasms. Of the total of 5345 cases in the data bank, 610 met the criteria. The distribution of both simple gains (349 cases) and simple losses (261 cases) throughout the genome was distinctly nonrandom. Chromosomes #8, #9, #12, and #21 were more often trisomic, whereas, chromosomes #7, #22, and Y were the ones most often lost. The frequency of simple aberrations varied widely in different diseases: 29.6% in chronic lymphocytic leuke…

Learning disorders and sex chromosome aberrations.

No sex chromosome aberrations were detected in a prospective study of twenty adult dyslexic men. A retrospective study of eighty-nine subjects with known sex chromosome aberrations revealed twenty of them to be mentally-retarded. Among the sixty-nine subjects of normal intelligence, learning, speech and attention disorders were frequent. Children with 47,XYY, 47,XXY, and 47,XXX karyotypes appeared particularly prone to experience delays in speech development as well as later academic underachievement in language-related subjects. In contrast, speech development was normal in all of the girls w…

Chromosome therapy: Potential strategies for the correction of severe chromosome aberrations.

Large chromosomal aberrations occur commonly during development, resulting in complex and multisystem diseases. In spite of this high frequency, there are currently no means for correcting these disorders due to their complexity and involvement of multiple genes. Recently, several new approaches have been devised that target whole chromosomes in vitro, which are collectively referred to as "Chromosome Therapies." These include silencing and selection for loss of the extra chromosome in trisomies, promotion of euploidy in an aneuploid culture, and forced loss and replacement of a chromosome. He

[Aberrations of chromosome 5 in myeloid malignancies with complex chromosome abnormalities].

This study was aimed to investigate the chromosome 5 abnormalities in complex chromosome aberrations (CCAs) in myeloid malignancies, chromosome aberrations of 68 cases of myeloid malignancies with CCAs were analysed. The 68 cases included 22 cases of acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML), 32 cases of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and 14 cases of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The results showed that the complex chromosome abnormalities were found in all chromosomes of 68 cases, but the incidence of chromosome 5 abnormality was higher (38.2%, 26/68), including 45.5% (10/22) in AML, 15.6% (5/32) i…

Simple numerical chromosome aberrations characterize pituitary adenomas.

Although pituitary adenomas are among the most frequent intracranial neoplasms, only very few have been cytogenetically analyzed. We have short-term cultured and karyotyped 28 consecutive pituitary adenomas (16 clinically nonfunctioning adenomas and 12 clinically functioning adenomas), finding a normal karyotype in 22, whereas 6 had clonal chromosome aberrations (5 nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas and 1 prolactinoma). The abnormal karyotypes were relatively simple. Most anomalies were numerical, with a structural rearrangement, t(6;19), being found in only one tumor. The most common aberratio…

Secondary chromosome aberrations in the acute leukemias.

Information was retrieved from a computer-based data bank about additional chromosome aberrations in patients with acute lymphatic or nonlymphatic leukemia (ALL or ANLL) and one of the following primary rearrangements: In ALL t(9;22), t(11;14), t(1;19), t(4;11), t(8;14), and del(6q); in ANLL t(9;22), t(6;9), t(8;21), t(15;17), t(9;11), inv(16), and del(20q). The distribution of secondary changes was nonrandom. Chromosomes #1, #7, #8, and #9 were frequently involved in both disease groups, albeit with some pointed differences regarding the types of rearrangements making up the majority of aberr…

[Familial chromosome X structural aberrations - case report].

UNLABELLED: The X chromosome contains about 1000 genes with different functions, both general and specialized, among which are genes responsible for normal function of the ovaries in women and normal growth in both sexes. Patients with chromosome X aberrations present a large spectrum of phenotypes depending on a variable size of chromosome X regions which are involved in aberrations, differences in genes located in/around given break-points, number of X chromosomes in cells and preferential X inactivation. We report on two families diagnosed with chromosome X aberration. The familial dupXq/de

[Characteristics of cases with chromosome 3q21q26 aberrations].

To investigate the cytogenetic and clinical characteristics of inv(3q) (q21q26) and t(3;3) (q21; q26) aberrations as well as prognosis, cases were collected and chromosome specimens of bone marrow cells were prepared by 24-hour culture, while G-banding technique was used to perform karyotyping. The results showed that the simple inv(3q) and t(3; 3) aberrations were rare, they commonly combined with other chromosome aberrations such as -7/7q- and t (9; 22). The involved diseases included myelodysplastic syndromes, acute myeloid leukemia and chronic myelogenous leukemia in blast crisis. Out of 2…
