A prospective cineradiographic and manometric study of pharyngeal and esophageal dysfunction was performed in 54 patients with rigidly defined scleroderma, polymyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Sixty patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) were studied by radionuclide esophageal transit (RT) and esophageal cineradiography. Fifty-two patients (87%) had abnormal RT with prolonged transit time and 28 (47%) had stagnation of radionuclide. RT was positively correlated to duration of disease (p less than 0.01). Cavernosography has become an important diagnostic test for detecting venous leakage as a cause of vasculogenic impotence. Digital subtraction cavernosography (DSC) was carried out on 21 patients with a history of venous leakage resulting in impotence. The DSC technique was compared to conventional cineradiography. Major venous leaks were easily identified in 16 patients. DSC was able to detect minor leaks missed by cineradiography in 2 patients. DSC seems to be a reliable technique that is easy to perform. It should be done in conjunction with pharmacologically induced erection.

We present the case of a 65 year-old female who was admitted to the hospital because of deterioration of chronic dyspnea. Twenty-three years prior to this admission, mitral valve replacement for chronic mitral stenosis was performed using a Starr-Edwards caged-ball prosthesis. There was severe pulmonary hypertension. On transthoracic echocardiography and on cineradiography, the function of the mitral valve prosthesis was unimpaired. However, cineradiography showed extensive mural calcification of the left atrium; we report this remarkable finding.

A 14-month-old severely retarded girl with a history of regurgitation, aspiration, and recurrent pneumonia was found to suffer from diffuse oesophageal spasm. This diagnosis was made by oesophageal cineradiography. This case suggests that diffuse oesophageal spasm is an oesophageal motility disorder that causes respiratory disease in the retarded child.

Webs were registered in the hypopharynx and cervical esophagus in 63 out of 500 dysphagial patients (12.5%) examined by radiography (single-film and cineradiography). Of these webs three were located above the level of the cricopharyngeal muscle. All the webs had smooth contours, were distinct and appeared unchanged on repeated swallowings. They were located mostly in the anterior wall, but could be circular. Such webs were found in only 2 of the 150 volunteers (1.3%). We report three cases of atlanto-axial rotatory fixation in adults. Early diagnosis was made by clinical tests showing restricted head rotation in maximal neck flexion and asymmetry of the transverse processes of the atlas, confirmed by cineradiography. A case of iatrogenic atlantoaxial subluxation after bilateral otoplasty is presented. Cineradiography was required for definitive diagnosis. Bed rest and Halter traction successfully resolved the condition. Great care is required while turning the head during skin preparation, draping, planning, and surgery, especially in young children. A high index of suspicion is necessary when a child develops torticollis after otoplasty.

Pharyngeal airway during sleep was observed with help of Fibro-optic flexible bronchoscope and cineradiography in 10 adult patients with Hypersomnia Sleep-Apnea (HSA) syndrome. The results of the study suggest that the structures involved in production of airway obstruction in the patients with HSA syndrome are the muscles of velopharyngeal sphincter and tongue. The laryngeal airway was not obstructed during the episodes of apnea.

Neither cineradiography nor videorecording are satisfactory techniques for the dynamic study of the oral phase of deglutition. Therefore, oral swallowing was studied by means of real-time sonography (US) in 20 asymptomatic patients. Both anatomy and motility of the muscles of the mouth and tongue were clearly demonstrated. Real-time US proved thus to allow an accurate and dynamic visualization of the oral phase of deglutition.
