Hyperinsulinemic diseases of civilization: more than just Syndrome X.

Compensatory hyperinsulinemia stemming from peripheral insulin resistance is a well-recognized metabolic disturbance that is at the root cause of diseases and maladies of Syndrome X (hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, obesity, abnormal glucose tolerance). Abnormalities of fibrinolysis and hyperuricemia also appear to be members of the cluster of illnesses comprising Syndrome X. Insulin is a well-established growth-promoting hormone, and recent evidence indicates that hyperinsulinemia causes a shift in a number of endocrine pathways that may favor unregulated

Tuberculosis and COVID-19: A combined global threat to human civilization.

A new era has begun with the discovery of SARS-CoV-2 in a seafood market in Wuhan, China. The SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has wreaked havoc on health systems and generated worldwide attention. The world's attention was diverted from the treatment of the leading chronic infectious illness, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The similarities in the performance of the two infectious species had obvious repercussions. Administrative efforts to combat SARS-CoV-2 have weakened the tuberculosis control chain. As a result, progress against tuberculosis has slowed. Thus, the goal of this review is to examine the impa

Defense and disaster medicine: civil contingencies and natural disasters in Swedish civil defense.

As in many other countries, Swedish defense during the Cold War was primarily organized around the perceived threat of war, including the potential use of nuclear weapons. This article shifts attention from such scenarios to the ways in which civil contingencies and natural disasters were conceptualized as knowledge objects within the emerging field of defense and disaster medicine. Their incorporation into Sweden's preparedness agenda signaled a broader and more multifaceted understanding of protection and security within the scientific advisory system of the Swedish defense. By centering med

A Crouzon syndrome from the Classic period of Maya civilization?

This article describes a retrospective diagnosis through an artistic representation of a pre-Columbian Central America bowl figuring a child with clinical characteristics of Crouzon syndrome. The report also highlights the importance of icono-diagnosis for a better description of the existing diseases into ancient societies.

The geography of civil unions in Vermont.

In 2000, Vermont established "civil unions" meant for same-sex couples. This form of marriage relies on the existence of a local gay and lesbian community, while contributing to the development of "gay and lesbian tourism" and pushing certain churches to revisit their treatment of same-sex couples. Gay and lesbian rights and rural communities are not mutually exclusive.

Public health and the civilizing process.

Since the Middle Ages, European society has passed through two successive stages in the "civilizing process." Each has been attended by profound changes in psychological and social codes. These are examined in relation to a greater concern with health and hygiene in response to four waves of epidemics: leprosy, plague, syphilis, and cholera. Speculations are offered about AIDS and the "civilizing process".

Rhabdomyolysis in a Civil Aviation Pilot.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially fatal disease caused by trauma, infections, and toxins. Rhabdomyolysis has not been reported in Chinese civil aircrew, but in our case report a male civil copilot contracted rhabdomyolysis after excessive exercise, showing potential for morbidity in pilots.CASE REPORT: After excessive exercise, a 29-yr-old male civil aviation copilot complained of serious myalgia and weakness in lower limb muscles and gross hematuria, whose values of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), myohemoglobin (Mb), creatine kinase (CK), CK-MB, lactate deh

Civil War vascular injuries.

As the result of the insistence of the Surgeon General during the United States Civil War, there was extensive documentation of injuries to major blood vessels and their resulting complications. The specific treatment of vascular injuries during the Civil War was ligation of the injured vessel or amputation. This was before there was any knowledge of the cause and prevention of infection. Overall, the results were dismal, with a mortality rate of nearly 60% for the more than 1000 soldiers treated by arterial ligation. The most important contribution of these medical reports was to define how t

A link between environmental pollution and civilization disorders: a mini review.

Most civilization disorders have a complex etiology, involving factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and environmental pollution (EP) due to different chemicals. Among harmful chemicals, the major ones include particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heavy metals, pesticides, plasticizers, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, furans, some food additives, hormones, and antibiotics. In fact, potential pollutants are countless and most of them have never been evaluated in terms of their toxicity and health risks, especially that new chemicals emerge …

[Rheumatism--a disease of civilization? Incidence of inflammatory rheumatic diseases in South Africa].

The population of Southern Africa is currently estimated at least 40 million and comprises people of 3 major--groups Negroid, Khoisan and Caucasoid. In addition to these, there are also smaller groups whose origin is Asiatic or Oriental, and a mixed group (coloured) which has resulted from the miscegenation between the Negroid-Caucasoid and other groups [1]. This great diversity of peoples and cultures permits unique opportunities for studies in comparative medicine which may provide valuable information about the pathogenesis and natural history of disease. The rheumatic diseases have not bee

"Hot beds of disease": malaria and civilization in nineteenth-century British India.

Malaria control was a relatively low priority for the British in India: despite being the principal cause of sickness and death among the Indian people, malaria affected the colonial economy only indirectly and, unlike epidemics of cholera or plague, presented few challenges to public order. Nevertheless, malaria was an important disease: not only in terms of its effects upon the health and livelihood of the indigenous population, but also in the language and politics of colonial rule. Malaria was a signifier of India's "backwardness" and its prevention was closely associated with the mission
