Sun, heat, and cold injuries in cyclists.

Cyclists are vulnerable to weather and commonly experience problems as they relate to extremes in both heat and cold. Educating cyclists on prevention of sunburn, dehydration, heat illness, hypothermia, and frostbite is the key. Limited sun exposure and proper use of sunscreens are the mainstay of treatment for prevention of sunburn. Adequate fluid and electrolyte replacement is necessary to avoid problems with dehydration and heat illness. Wind- and water-resistant clothing is recommended to protect against hypothermia and frostbite. Adequate training and acclimatization are, of course, recom

Cold exposure injuries: prevention and treatment.

A variety of cold exposure injuries were discussed, including frostnip, chilblains, trench foot, frostbite, and hypothermia. The usual precipitating factors for each were discussed along with the clinical course, the pathophysiology, and management from the perspective of one being in the field or backcountry. Prevention is the key to all cold-related problems as adequate treatment is often not possible out of the hospital setting. Detailed recommendations were made for all conditions, relative to treatment and prevention, with special emphasis on hypothermia.

Human vulnerability and variability in the cold: Establishing individual risks for cold weather injuries.

Human tolerance to cold environments is extremely limited and responses between individuals is highly variable. Such physiological and morphological predispositions place them at high risk of developing cold weather injuries [CWI; including hypothermia and/or non-freezing (NFCI) and freezing cold injuries (FCI)]. The present manuscript highlights current knowledge on the vulnerability and variability of human cold responses and associated risks of developing CWI. This review 1) defines and categorizes cold stress and CWI, 2) presents cold defense mechanisms including biological adaptations, ac

Cold thermal injury from cold caps used for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced alopecia.

INTRODUCTION: The use of scalp cooling for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) is increasing. Cold caps are placed onto the hair-bearing areas of the scalp for varying time periods before, during, and after cytotoxic chemotherapy. Although not yet reported, improper application procedures could result in adverse events (AEs). At present, there are no evidence-based scalp cooling protocols, and there is no regulatory oversight of their use. OBJECTIVE: To report the occurrence of cold thermal injury (frostbite) on the scalp, following the use of cold caps for the prevention of

Finger and Toe Temperature Responses to Cold After Freezing Cold Injury in Elite Alpinists.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether previous freezing cold injuries (FCI) would affect digit skin temperatures and rewarming rates during a follow-up cold stress test protocol. DESIGN: Nonrandomized control trial. METHODS: Twenty elite alpinists participated; alpinists with previous FCI requiring digit amputations (injured, INJ: n = 10 total, n = 8 male) were compared with ability-matched, uninjured alpinists (control, CON: n = 10, all male). Digit skin temperature was measured using infrared thermography as an index of peripheral digit perfusion after a cold stress test, which consisted of 30 minu

Cold injury syndrome and neurodevelopmental changes in survivors.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to extend and develop knowledge of the clinical parameters of cold injury syndrome (CIS) in hypothermic infants and newborns, so that morbidity, mortality, and neurodevelopmental disturbances associated with the condition can be reduced. METHODS: This retrospective, 10-year cohort study investigated 103 hypothermic infant and newborn patients (aged 0-60 days) admitted to the Pediatric Department between January 1, 1976 and December 31, 1985. Medical records of 67 survivors and 36 children who died were analyzed. Of the survivors, 24 consented to undergo a

Cold nerve injury is enhanced by intermittent cooling.

Clinically nonfreezing cold nerve injury (NFCNI) is often preceded by fluctuating ambient temperatures. To simulate this we exposed the sciatic nerve of Wistar rats to intermittent cooling and rewarming. This paradigm was contrasted with one in which the sciatic nerve was continuously cooled. Despite an identical duration and degree of sciatic nerve cooling in both experiments, the pathology, as assessed neurophysiologically and morphologically, was much more severe when the nerve was intermittently cooled. It is likely that this exaggerated pathology is a result of repeated reperfusion injury

Cold pressor test in spinal cord injury-revisited.

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. OBJECTIVES: A spinal cord injury (SCI) commonly results in alterations of cardiovascular physiology. In order to investigate such alterations, the cold pressor test (CPT) has been used as an established challenge test. This review summarizes the basic physiology underlying a CPT, discusses potential mechanisms responsible for abnormal pressor responses following SCI, and highlights the utility of CPT in the SCI population. SETTING: Canada and Switzerland. METHODS: We have completed a comprehensive review of studies that have investigated the effect of foot o

Neuropathy in non-freezing cold injury (trench foot).

Non-freezing cold injury (trench foot) is characterized, in severe cases, by peripheral nerve damage and tissue necrosis. Controversy exists regarding the susceptibility of nerve fibre populations to injury as well as the mechanism of injury. Clinical and histological studies (n = 2) were conducted in a 40-year-old man with severe non-freezing cold injury in both feet. Clinical sensory tests, including two-point discrimination and pressure, vibration and thermal thresholds, indicated damage to large and small diameter nerves. On immunohistochemical assessment, terminal cutaneous nerve fibres w

High Alt Med Biol. 19:185-192, 2018. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess whether previous freezing cold injury in fingers and/or toes might predispose alpinists to greater risk of further freezing cold injury, primarily due to a greater vasoconstrictor response to cold, resulting in a lower perfusion, reflected in lower skin temperature. METHODS: Ten elite alpinists (N = 10; 8 male and 2 female) wit

Vinpocetine Ameliorates Neuronal Injury After Cold-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury in Mice.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), also known as intracranial injury, is a common condition with the highest incidence rate among neurodegenerative disorders and poses a significant public health burden. Various methods are used in the treatment of TBI, but the effects of cold-induced traumatic brain injury have not been thoroughly studied. In this context, vinpocetine (VPN), derived from Vinca minor, exhibits notable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. VPN is known for its neuroprotective role and is generally utilized for treating various neurodegenerative disorders. However, the functi

Cold injury to nerves is not due to ischaemia alone.

The effect of cold on nerve fibre populations may be quite selective. Thus it was possible in the present study, with precise timing of a non-freezing cold nerve injury, to destroy myelinated fibres, but leave unmyelinated fibres intact. The aetiology of this cold-induced selective peripheral nerve pathology remains controversial, but recent evidence suggests that ischaemia plays an important role. To investigate this matter further, we have sought to determine whether ischaemia alone might account for such discrete nerve pathology, in a series of non-freezing cold injury paradigms. Compared w

Training videos to prevent cold weather injuries.

Cold weather injuries (CWIs) are a challenge during military training, exercises and operations in Arctic conditions. Soldier performance in these challenging conditions depends on protective equipment, knowledge, personal experience, routines, and leadership. Despite the Norwegian Armed Forces' goal of zero freezing cold injuries (FCIs), there has been a persistently high incidence of FCIs among the younger soldiers with an average of 120-150 new FCIs recorded each year. Therefore, an expert working group with representatives from medical, defence and research background was established in 20

Cold Weather Injuries: Initial Evaluation and Management.

As more people take to extreme sporting activities and hobbies, the sports medicine physician should be proficient in early identification and initial sideline or field management of cold weather injuries. There is significant mortality and morbidity associated with these conditions. The most severe of these are hypothermia and frostbite, which have limited evidence for their field management. Nonfreezing cold injuries and chilblains are much rarer, although appropriate prevention and treatment strategies can be used to minimize harm to athletes. This article will provide the most updated reco

Unraveling the Mystery of Cold Stress-Induced Myocardial Injury.

Exposure to low ambient temperature imposes great challenge to human health. Epidemiological evidence has noted significantly elevated emergency admission and mortality rate in cold climate in many regions, in particular, adverse events in cardiovascular system. Cold stress is becoming one of the important risk factors for cardiovascular death. Through recent advance in echocardiography and myocardial histological techniques, both clinical and experimental experiments have unveiled that cold stress triggers a variety of pathological and pathophysiological injuries, including ventricular wall t

Effect of melatonin on kidney cold ischemic preservation injury.

Melatonin is a potent free radical scavenger of reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide synthase inhibitor and a well-known antioxidant secreted from pineal gland. This hormone has been reported to protect tissue from oxidative damage. In this study, we aim to investigate the effect of melatonin on kidney cold ischemia time when added to preservation solution. Thirty male Wistar albino rats were divided equally into three groups; Ringer Lactate (RL) solution, University of Wisconsin (UW) solution with and without melatonin. The serum Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) activities of the preservation sol
