A Review of Chlamydial Infections in Wild Birds.

The Chlamydia are a globally distributed genus of bacteria that can infect and cause disease in a range of hosts. Birds are the primary host … ies are emerging as significant chlamydial hosts, in addition to established wild hosts such as the Columbidae. Clarifying the effects of these bacteria on avian host fitness and the zoonotic potential of emerging Chlamydiales will help us to understand the implications of these infections for avian and human health.

Ectoparasites and Intestinal Helminths of Pigeons in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

The prevalence of ectoparasites and intestinal helminths of different pigeon taxa in Medina, Saudi Arabia, with special emphasis on the feral pigeon, Columba livia domestica (Columbiformes: Columbidae), was evaluated. Fifty-four pigeons were examined externally for ectoparasites and 28 feral pigeons were examined for helminths. Two ectoparasites were recorded on feral C. l. domestica (Harami) pigeons, including the shaft louse Menopon gallinae (Phthiraptera: Menoponidae), and the pigeon fly, Pseudolynchia canariensis (Diptera: Hippoboscidae), with 100 and 88.90% prevalence, respectively. Ectop…

The protozoan parasite Trichomonas gallinae causes adult and nestling mortality in a declining population of European Turtle Doves, Streptopelia turtur.

Studies incorporating the ecology of clinical and sub-clinical disease in wild populations of conservation concern are rare. Here we examine … gged Partridge) carried a single strain of T. gallinae, suggesting that parasite spill over between Columbidae and Galliformes is a possibility that should be further investigated. Overall, we highlight the importance of monitoring populations for sub-clinical infection rather than just clinical disease.

Characterization of genotype IX Newcastle disease virus strains isolated from wild birds in the northern Qinling Mountains, China.

This study was conducted to evaluate the virulence and evolution of genotype IX Newcastle disease virus (NDV) isolates obtained from wild bi … ural carriers of virulent genotype IX NDV. A novel NDV isolate from the Spotted-necked Dove (family Columbidae) exhibited discordance between its lentogenic ICPI and its virulent proteolytic cleavage site motif (112)R-R-Q-R-R-F(117). Although the five isolates underwent several amino acid mutations in the fusion protein, evidence of continuous evolutionary d …

An Uncommon Case of Trueperella pyogenes Infection in an Adult Backyard Rooster and a Retrospective Study; 2000-20.

Trueperella pyogenes is an opportunistic Gram-positive bacterium that induces purulent lesions and abscesses in cattle, small ruminants, and swine. In birds, T. pyogenes infections have been linked to lameness and osteomyelitis in turkeys (Phasianidae) and hepatic fibriscess in turkeys and pigeons (Columbidae). An 18-mo-old backyard rooster with a history of progressive emaciation was submitted to the California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) laboratory system. At necropsy, unusual numerous miliary granulomas were identified, primarily in the spleen, but granulomas were also observed in…

Olfactory navigation in homing pigeons: the last challenge.

The olfactory navigation hypothesis of pigeon homing was recently challenged by the discovery in the upper beak of putative magnetoreceptors innervated by the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve. To assess whether the nature of the cues used for navigation is determined by the kind of stimuli to which the birds are preferentially exposed during development, we tested the navigational performance of pigeons subjected when young to section of either the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve (V1) or the olfactory nerve and then subjected to training flights after the surgery. Section of

First report of the morphological and molecular characterization of Pseudolynchia canariensis (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) from Al-Baha region, Saudi Arabia.

This study aims to study the morphological and molecular characterization of (Pseudolynchia canariensis; Macquart, 1839)in the Al-Baha region of Saudi Arabia. Ninety-four pigeons were obtained from traditional pigeon breeding farms of the Al-Baha region, and fly samples were collected. Taxonomic keys were used to define the morphology of flies, whereas molecular characteristics were identified based on cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1. The rate of Pseudolynchia canariensis infestation in the examined pigeons was 44.5%. The genetic sequences of the fly samples were deposited in GenBank (accession

Effect of mydriasis with topical rocuronium bromide on electroretinography in domestic pigeons (Columba livia).

This study aimed to investigate the effect of mydriasis using topical rocuronium bromide on electroretinography (ERG) in domestic pigeons (Columba livia). Scotopic mixed rod and cone, photopic cone, and photopic flicker ERG were performed on nine eyes of nine healthy adult pigeons under sedation. Each pigeon underwent two sets of ERG recordings. First, without the induction of mydriasis (control) and the second time with the induction of mydriasis using topical rocuronium bromide (treatment). The results were compared using either the Student's t-test or Wilcoxon rank-sum test, where a P-value

Physiological and biochemical aspects of the avian uropygial gland.

This review discusses different aspects of the uropygial gland of birds. The gland exhibits a striking morphological diversity in size, shape and presence/absence of tufts of feathers. It was shown that acidic mucins, neutral lipids, glycolipids and phospholipids are normal components of secretion. Several morphological and physiological aspects of the gland were studied on Rock Pigeon Columba livia Gmelin, 1879. The amount of the uropygial gland secretion, its lipid content and fatty acids profile were determined. The extracted lipid mixture contained of C14 to C20 fatty acids, mostly unsatur

Investigation of Avian Influenza Viruses (H9N2-H5nx) in Pigeons during Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Outbreaks in Iran, in 2016.

Avian influenza (AI) virus (H9N2 and H5 subtypes) infections in birds cause major concerns around the world. The majority of the avian species, such as domestic, pet, and wild birds, are natural and experimental hosts of avian influenza viruses. There are global concerns about members of the Columbidae family, namely pigeons or doves, for their role as the potential interspecies bridge in influenza A viruses ecology. The acquired scientific data in this regard is still not clear since there are doubts about whether or not they transmit viruses between susceptible populations, and spread viruse…

Comparative study of gut microbiota on fat deposition in European meat pigeons and Yuzhong pigeons.

The rate of fat deposition is a critical indicator for assessing the quality of roast squab. Fat deposition in meat pigeons is closely related to their intestinal flora. However, few studies have examined the relationship between gut microbiota structure and fat synthesis in pigeons. This study focused on 28-day-old roast squabs of European meat pigeons and Yuzhong pigeons, which exhibit significant differences in fat synthesis and weight. We analyzed the molecular mechanisms by which the intestinal microbiota of different meat pigeons influences fat deposition. Additionally, we evaluated the

Fatal Sarcocystis calchasi hepatitis in a captive Indian ringneck parakeet (Psittacula krameri manillensis).

An adult Indian ringneck parakeet (Psittacula krameri manillensis) from an outdoor aviary in Sacramento, California was found dead on the nest box. Postmortem examination showed firm, enlarged, yellow‑tinged liver and splenomegaly. Multifocal to coalescing, acute necrosis with macrophages, lymphocytes, plasma cells, and periportal ductular reaction were seen on liver histology with extra- and intracellular schizonts and merozoites. A few schizonts and lymphohistiocytic inflammation were seen in the spleen. Toxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis neurona, S. falcatula and Neospora caninum were ruled out
