BACKGROUND: Volunteer community health workers (CHWs) are an important link between the public health system and the community. The 'Community Participation Policy for Health' in Cambodia identifies CHWs as key to local health promotion and as a critical link between district health centres and the community. However, research on the challenges CHWs face and identifying what is required to optimise their performance is limited in the Cambodian context. This research explores the views of CHWs in rural Cambodia, on the challenges they face when implementing health initiatives.

Objectives. To examine the roles and activities performed by community health workers (CHWs) involved in the national Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) program and examine differences based on setting characteristics. Methods. We used data from a CHW self-report survey (n = 689) conducted February through March 2024 in the United States. We ran a series of ordered logistic regression models to examine the association between setting characteristics (i.e., type of organizational setting, organizational experience with CHWs, and populations of focus) and

INTRODUCTION: The electronic Community Health Information System (eCHIS) is a mobile health technology that was scaled nationally to community health workers (CHWs) in Kenya beginning in 2023. Since the rapid scale up, reports on eCHIS uptake show varying adoption rates. The overall purpose of this study was to assess the relationships between implementation process and acceptability of eCHIS by CHWs in Kenya.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 5 counties in Kenya with 310 CHWs (40 community health assistants and 270 community health promoters) selected through convenience stra

INTRODUCTION: Communities with low socioeconomic status have disproportionately high rates of tobacco use, and community health workers (CHWs) have an increasing role in delivering tobacco cessation interventions. However, existing tobacco cessation trainings are not appropriate for the CHW model of care. The aim of this study was to identify training needs of CHWs to develop a tailored tobacco cessation curriculum to help them effectively serve their high-risk patients. Incorporating results of a previously conducted needs assessment survey, we developed a preliminary outline of a tobacco ces

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the contribution of community health posts and community health workers (CHWs) to geographical accessibility of primary healthcare (PHC) services at community level and strategies for optimising geographical accessibility to these services.
METHODS: Using a complete georeferenced census of community health posts and CHWs in Niger and other high-resolution spatial datasets, we modelled travel times to community health posts and CHWs between 2000 and 2013, accounting for training, commodities and maximum population capacity. We estimated additional CHWs needed

Canada's primary care system faces persistent challenges related to access, continuity, and coordination. These pressures are commonly framed in terms of health workforce shortages, long waits, and growing demand associated with population aging and immigration. But capacity constraints do not fully account for the problem. Many access failures also arise before and between clinical encounters: needs go unrecognized, entry points are unclear or culturally misaligned, referrals break down across handoffs, and follow-up is not sustained. These breakdowns disproportionately affect people facing s

Community health workers (CHWs) integrated in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care teams undertake a variety of tasks to help patients navigate health care, develop care plans, and address social needs. Given the broad role of CHWs in HIV care, we sought to understand which client attributes are associated with various dimensions of CHW satisfaction using a sample of 204 people with HIV (PWH) from various geographic regions across the United States. Multivariable linear regressions were used to determine which client attributes were associated with complete satisfaction with CHWs using 10 v

PURPOSE: When healthcare workers have stigmatizing attitudes toward people living with HIV it may lead to discriminatory behavior that interferes with prevention, treatment, and care. This research examined the HIV-related stigmatizing attitudes reported by health workers in Santiago, Chile. METHODS: The study used focus group data from the first phase of a larger study to develop and test a HIV prevention intervention for Chilean health workers. Ten focus groups were conducted with Health workers in two communities in Santiago, Chile. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Tw

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic data concerning skin diseases in many rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa are not available. Little is known about the effect of regular treatment schedules by paramedical staff (especially community health workers) in the primary healthcare system on the severity and prevalence of dermatoses.
METHODS: 5780 school and pre-school children from 13 primary schools in four sublocations in rural western Kenya (Kisumu District) were examined for dermatoses by the author, together with community health workers in 1993. On-the-spot training and weekend seminars about important

A community-based health development programme in Saradidi, Kenya had 126 village health helpers (VHH's) for the 56 villages. These volunteer health workers lived in the community and served a total population of about 43,000 in an area of 225 km2. Each VHH served a maximum of 100 households averaging 4.0 persons. Conditions imposed by the community were that the VHH be perceived to be a mature person, to be compassionate and to have a desire to help people and to live in the village. Literacy or formal education were not requirements. VHH's were chosen and supported by the people who lived in

BACKGROUND: Throughout Nigeria malaria is an endemic disease. Efforts to treat malaria can also be combined with other illnesses including pneumonia and diarrhea, which are killing children under five years of age. The use of Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) aids early diagnosis of malaria and informs when other illnesses should be considered. Those with positive RDT results should be treated with Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACTs), while those with negative RDTs results are further investigated for pneumonia and diarrhea. Critical health systems challenges such as human resource constrai

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Lay Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a critical role in reducing mental health disparities, particularly among underserved and vulnerable populations, by bridging gaps in care and promoting mental well-being. This narrative review aimed to identify and characterize training programs designed for CHWs, with a focus on those targeting cancer patients and individuals with chronic conditions.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across databases including PubMed, EBSCOhost, Scielo, Redalyc, and Google Scholar. From an initial pool of 10,372 reference

In Sudan's South White Nile Province the development of a communication strategy for the diarrhoeal disease programme was preceded by the collection of data from community members and health personnel. A majority of health workers had only a limited knowledge of the community's methods of dealing with diarrhoea. Most of these workers had very negative attitudes towards mothers and home interventions. This information was vital for planning a comprehensive educational scheme for both health workers and communities.

INTRODUCTION: In the second half of 2019, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana was selected as 1 of the 3 jump-start pilot jurisdictions for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. Initiative. An innovative community health worker program was among the strategies developed to reduce the number of new HIV infections. In addition to testing for HIV/sexually transmitted infections in nontraditional settings, community health workers provided integrated services, including linkage for people with HIV, pre-exposure prophylaxis navigation, sterile inje

Community health workers (CHWs) in Africa perform indispensable functions across the outbreak response cycle. These include early case detection, contact tracing, risk communication and zoonotic interface monitoring. They depend on community embeddedness, an asset the formal health system cannot replicate in emergencies. Yet despite a substantial evidence base, more than 80% of Africa's 1.4 million CHWs operate under volunteerism frameworks, without formal employment, salaries or enforceable protections. This is not a consequence of resource scarcity. It is a deliberate programme design choice

BACKGROUND: Children with hearing loss (HL) require coordination of care to navigate medical and social services. Strong evidence supports the role of community health workers (CHWs) to identify and address social barriers.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of integrating CHWs into the medical teams of children with HL and identify the social needs associated with their caregivers at a large urban hospital center.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted for 30 children with HL whose caregivers enrolled in a CHW program between August 1, 2017 and Decembe

OBJECTIVES: Global interest in community health worker (CHW) programs in primary health care (PHC) is rising because of their potential to advance universal health coverage and other global health goals. This systematic review examines the evidence on the cost-effectiveness of CHW interventions worldwide, with a focus on vulnerable populations in PHC settings.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, SCOPUS, and EconLit databases. The search was last updated on May 13, 2025. Two reviewers independently selected articles, rated their
