The impact of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder in perfectionism.

OBJECTIVE: The construct of perfectionism has long been related to Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD), though research has not considered how OCPD could distinguish individuals with elevated perfectionism. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical differences between those with and without OCPD in a sample of individuals with elevated perfectionism. METHODS: Seventy-four university students with elevated perfectionism completed a diagnostic assessment and several self-report measures of clinical characteristics and were randomly assigned to complete an exposure-based treatm…

Altered spontaneous brain activity in obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is one of the most prevalent personality disorders in general population. However, neural mechanisms underlying OCPD remain elusive. The aim of this study is to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine whether OCPD patients will exhibit altered spontaneous brain activity as compared to healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data were acquired in 37 OCPD patients and 37 matched HC. Amplitudes of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) were calculated and compared between the two groups. Correlation analysis wa…

Perceptual strategies of isolation in obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Recent findings have shown that the Defense Mechanism Test, a serial tachistoscopic technique developed inside the percept-genetic frame of reference, discriminates neurotics from normals, neurotics from schizophrenic outpatients, and subjects with histrionic personality disorder from controls. The present research addresses another major class of Axis II pathology, comparing on the Defense Mechanism Test a group with a psychometric diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (n = 26) with a matched sample of noncompulsive controls. As predicted, several variants of isolation were s…

The relation among perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder in individuals with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Perfectionism and obsessionality are core features of eating disorders (ED), yet the nature of their relation remains unknown. Understanding the relation between these traits may enhance our ability to identify relevant behavioral endophenotypes for ED. METHOD: Six-hundred seven individuals with anorexia and bulimia nervosa from the International Price Foundation Genetic Study were assessed for perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). RESULTS: No differences were found across ED subtypes in the prevalence of OCPD and…

Personality disorder traits in young adults with subclinical obsessive-compulsive symptoms: Not just traits related to obsessive- compulsive personality.

Research is scarce regarding personality disorder traits of individuals with subclinical obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Cluster analysis based on obsessional, schizotypal, and borderline personality and autism-spectrum features was conducted on the results for 118 students scoring above cutoff on the Obsessive Compulsive Inventory-Revised. This identified four groups: O, L, S, and A. One third of the sample was represented by individuals with obsessional traits (O), while another third was composed of individuals with low traits (L); the last two profiles corresponded to a cluster with autisti

Schizotypal personality disorder in clinical obsessive-compulsive disorder samples: a brief overview.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and disabling mental disorder characterized by the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions that cause major distress and impair important areas of functioning. About 9 out of 10 patients with OCD have comorbid psychiatric diagnoses. A high proportion of clinically diagnosed OCD patients fulfill diagnostic criteria of a schizophrenia spectrum disorder, to the point that significant evidence in the literature supports the existence and the clinical relevance of a schizo-obsessive spectrum of disorders, including schizotypal personality disorder

Gambling disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder: A frequent but understudied comorbidity.

Background and aims Epidemiological data have suggested that the prevalence of co-occurring personality disorders is particularly high in people with gambling disorder (GD). Among the personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) appears to be the most common problem. The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical presentation of GD with and without co-occurring OCPD. Methods We studied 25 subjects with current GD and lifetime diagnosis of OCPD. They were matched for age and gender with 25 individuals with current GD but no lifetime diagnosis of any perso…

Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder Co-occurring in Individuals with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After participating in this activity, learners should be better able to:• Assess the rates of co-occurring obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)• Identify characteristics related to OCD with co-occurring OCPD. ABSTRACT: The current literature discloses discrepant findings regarding the rates of co-occurring obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In addition, it is not clear which characteristics are related specifically to OCD with co-occurring O…

The neurobiology of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A number of recent investigations have focused on the neurobiology of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). However, there have been few reviews of this literature with no detailed model proposed. We therefore undertook a systematic review of these investigations, aiming to map the available evidence and investigate whether it is possible to formulate a detailed model of the neurobiology of OCPD. METHODS: OCPD can be considered from both categorical and dimensional perspectives. An electronic search was therefore conducted using terms that would address not only OCPD a…

Is obsessive-compulsive personality disorder related to stress-related exhaustion?

OBJECTIVE: Recovery from stress-related diagnoses can, in some cases, be long-lasting, and several different factors could be related to such a lengthy recovery. One plausible aspect is obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), which has previously been seen to be related to stress-related mental health. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate whether recovery from exhaustion disorder (ED) is associated with OCPD. METHODS: This study includes data from 147 patients (78% women, mean age 52.4 ± 9.8 years) who have been treated for ED. Clinical assessment was performed 7-10 years …

Obsessive-compulsive (anankastic) personality disorder: toward the ICD-11 classification.

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is an early-onset disorder characterized by perfectionism, need for control, and cognitive rigidity. Its nosological status is currently under review. Historically, OCPD has been conceptualized as bearing a close relationship with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In this article, we discuss the diagnosis of OCPD in anticipation of its review for the ICD-11, from the perspective of clinical utility, global applicability, and research planning. Considering the recent establishment of an obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRD) categor…

Is comorbid Obsessive-compulsive Personality Disorder responsible for a longer duration of untreated illness in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is marked by a pervasive preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control, often overlapping with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in terms of rigid and repetitive behaviors. While OCD behaviors are ego-dystonic and confined to specific areas of life, OCPD behaviors are ego-syntonic and affect overall functioning. Although the relationship between OCD and OCPD has been object of investigation, the impact of OCPD comorbidity on OCD remains underexplored. This study examines potential clinical differences between …

The impact of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder on obsessive-compulsive disorder: clinical outcomes in the context of bipolarity.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by obsessions and compulsions that significantly impair functioning. Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) co-occurs in 17-45% of OCD patients, worsening outcomes across multiple domains. Therefore, we aimed to study the impact of OCPD in more detail by analyzing selected comorbidities, emotional aspects, and sociodemographic data. This study assessed 78 OCD patients (average age 44.9 years, 34.61% OCPD), using Y-BOCS, BABS, BPAQ, BIS-11, YMRS, HDRS-17, and ASEX. Patients with comorbid OCPD had significantly worse outcomes in symp…

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Comorbid With or Without Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: Conceptual Implications, Clinical Correlates, and Brain Morphometries.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is often comorbid with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). The relationship between OCD and OCPD is complex, and the impact of comorbid OCPD on OCD remains underexplored, necessitating further research. In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical correlates and brain morphometries associated with comorbid OCPD in a large sample of unmedicated patients with OCD. METHODS: A total of 248 unmedicated patients diagnosed with OCD (45 comorbid with OCPD) were included in this study. All participants were assessed for OCD symptoms,…

Impact of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder symptoms in Internet users.

BACKGROUND: Internet use is pervasive in many cultures. Little is known about the impact of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) symptoms on impulsive and compulsive psychopathologies in people who use the Internet. METHODS: Adult Internet users (N = 1,323) completed an online questionnaire quantifying OCPD symptoms, likely occurrence of select mental disorders (obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], problematic Internet use, generalized anxiety disorder), and personality questionnaires of impulsivity and compulsivity. Predictors of the pre…

Personality traits and smoking in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

As opposed to other psychiatric populations, subjects with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) smoke less than the general population. The p … o speed up, than smokers with OCD. Additionally, non-smokers fulfilled significantly more obsessive-compulsive personality disorder criteria as compared to the smokers (P < 0.001). We propose a clinical subtype of OCD related to non-smoking, psychasthenia, anxiety, and pronounced obsessive-compulsive personality disorder traits.

Personality differences between obsessive-compulsive disorder subtypes: washers versus checkers.

Personality differences between 'washer' and 'checker' subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were explored. Fifty-one OCD patients were recruited from several outpatient clinics in Central Israel. OCD was diagnosed according to DSM-III-R using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R, and personality disorders were diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders. Washers were much more likely to have personality disorders than checkers. Personality disorders were diagnosed in 12 of 13 washers vs. three of 11 checkers (chi 2 = 10.75, Fisher

The alliance-outcome association in borderline and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Personality disorders are considered a possible factor affecting the relationship between therapeutic alliance and therapy outcome. The present study investigated the alliance-outcome effect in patient groups with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). Data derived from a sample of n = 66 patients, treated in a day care hospital setting with a dialectical-behavioral and schema therapeutic treatment concept. Patients rated their symptom severity at admission, early alliance after 4-6 therapy sessions and symptom severity as well as alliance a…
