Psychological factors in oral mucosal and orofacial pain conditions.

The psychological aspects of chronic pain conditions represent a key component of the pain experience, and orofacial pain conditions are not an exception. In this review, we highlight how psychological factors affect some common oral mucosal and orofacial pain conditions (namely, oral lichen planus, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, burning mouth syndrome, and temporomandibular disorders) with emphasis on the significance of supplementing classical biomedical treatment modalities with appropriate psychological counseling to improve treatment outcomes in targeted patients. A literature search rest

Psychological conditions of caregivers of adult subjects with Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder. Individuals with PWS face a range of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional challenges that require comprehensive and lifelong care, posing significant demands on their caregivers. The study is not only aimed to assess the psychological conditions of caregivers of adult subjects with PWS focusing on psychological distress and coping, but also to shed light on a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of healthcare. This study aims to compare the psychological well-being of individuals with PWS and their caregivers

Comparison of the Psychological Condition of Chinese Patients with or without Halitosis Complaints.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the psychological condition of Chinese patients with or without a primary complaint of halitosis. METHODS: The psychological condition of 196 Chinese patients who visited the Department of Periodontics was evaluated using the Cornell Medical Index (CMI) health questionnaire. The breath malodour of all patients was scored using the organoleptic test (OLT). RESULTS: More than half of patients (53.1%) complaining of halitosis actually demonstrated pseudo-halitosis. The overall scores and scores for emotional symptoms of CMI were significantly higher in patients with a

A meta-analysis of the effectiveness of psychological interventions for adults with skin conditions.

Skin conditions can be associated with heightened levels of psychological morbidity, suggesting the need for psychological interventions. A number of specific interventions (such as habit reversal) have been developed. However, to date, there has not been a systematic review of the effectiveness of psychological interventions. We sought to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of psychological interventions designed to improve the severity of and adjustment to skin conditions in adults. Database, archival and citation searches were conducted. Studies were included if participants were allo

New strategies in the assessment of psychological factors affecting medical conditions.

In this article, we examine research that may lead to a better assessment of psychological factors affecting medical conditions. We performed a review of the psychosomatic literature using both Medline and manual searches. We selected papers that were judged to be relevant to new strategies of assessment, with particular reference to the use of the Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research. We assessed 8 areas concerned with the assessment of psychological factors in the setting of medical disease: hypochondriasis, disease phobia, persistent somatization, conversion symptoms, illness deni

The psychological impact of infertility: a comparison with patients with other medical conditions.

To compare the psychological symptoms of infertile women with patients with other chronic medical conditions, subjects completed the Symptom Checklist-90 (Revised) (SCL-90R), a standardized, validated and widely used psychological questionnaire, prior to enrolling in a group behavioral treatment program. All subjects were female and the totals in each program were as follows: 149 with infertility, 136 with chronic pain, 22 undergoing cardiac rehabilitation, 93 with cancer, 77 with hypertension, and 11 with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive status. The infertile women had global sympt

[Clinico-psychological examination of children with protracted hypomanic conditions in schizophrenia].

A clinico-psychological study covered 28 children aged 4-13 years with protracted hypomanic states (2-8 years) in 3-10-year-long schizophrenia. The authors investigated peculiarities of the development of cognitive activity (thought and perception). Comparison was made between groups of schizophrenics and control groups (the syndrome of motor disinhibition, schizoid psychopathy). The findings of a clinico-psychological examination have helped to elucidate differences in the development of cognitive activity in the above groups of children which may be used for the differential diagnosis and pr

Transcriptomic analysis of the submandibular gland under psychological stress condition.

BACKGROUND: Psychological stress is associated with changes in salivary flow and composition. However, studies to show the effect of psychological stress on the transcriptome of the salivary gland are limited. This study aims to perform a transcriptomic analysis of the submandibular gland under psychological stress using a chronic restraint stress model of rats. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into stress groups and control groups. Psychological stress was induced in the stress group rats by enclosing them in a plastic tube for 4 h daily over 6 weeks. RNA sequencing was performed on

Associations of Psychologic Factors with Multiple Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions.

AIMS: To characterize psychologic functioning across five chronic overlapping pain conditions (COPCs)-temporomandibular disorders, fibromyalgia, low back pain, headache, and irritable bowel syndrome-and their overlaps. METHODS: Participants were 655 adults in the OPPERA study. Psychologic variables were standardized in separate logistic regression models to compare their relative strength of association with each COPC. Random forest regression was used to explore the association of all psychologic measures with COPCs simultaneously. Linear regression analyses examined whether the count of COP

Bidirectional relationships between psychological health and dermatological conditions in children.

Dermatological conditions are common among children. They are a frequent cause of presentation to health care services and a leading contributor to burden of disease. Evidence supports the notion that bidirectional relationships exist between children's physical and psychological health, whereby the child's dermatological condition can impact their psychological health and well-being, while, in the reverse direction, psychological factors (eg, stress) can impact the severity and course of the child's skin disease. The psychological impact of dermatological conditions in childhood needs to be t

[The psychological behavior of patients in danger of infection under conditions of isolation].

36 patients with agranulocytosis among them 29 cancer patients were treated in a Life Island (LI) during totally 990 days and were studied for their psychological reactions. Another group of 9 patients among them 6 leukemia patients were treated in reverse isolation (RI) during 578 days. The psychological reactions of these patients were equally studied and were compared with those of the first group. Main reactions to the isolation in the LI were signs of deprivation, specially movement deprivation, as well as aggressive and regressive behaviour. The patients in RI showed on the other hand se

[The psychological behavior of tumor patients with agranulocytosis under conditions of isolation].

31 patients with severe leukopenia, including 27 with neoplastic diseases, were treated in a germfree isolator system for a total of 767 days. For this purpose the patients were informed of their diagnosis. Deprivation syndromes as well as aggressive and regressive behaviour patterns were the most common psychological reactions to isolation. In no instance was the isolation terminated because of psychological complications. A variety of factors are of particular importance in the guidance of isolated cancer patients: confidence in medical treatments, adequate information about the disease and

Biochemical and psychological markers of fatigue and recovery in mixed martial arts athletes during strength and conditioning training.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) training imposes significant physiological and psychological demands, increasing the risk of overtraining. This study aimed to assess temporal changes in biochemical and psychological fatigue and recovery markers during a structured 3-week strength and conditioning training program in professional MMA athletes. Ten male MMA athletes (26.2 ± 0.9 years; 7.0 ± 2.0 years of training experience) participated. Blood samples and psychological assessments (Profile of Mood States - POMS) were collected at four time points: pre-training (T-0), and after each training week (T-1,

Psychological factors affecting medical condition: a new proposal for DSM-V.

The DSM category of "psychological factors affecting medical condition" had virtually no impact on clinical practice. However, several clinically relevant psychosomatic syndromes have been described in the literature: disease phobia, persistent somatization, conversion symptoms, illness denial, demoralization, and irritable mood. These syndromes, in addition to the DSM definition of hypochondriasis, can yield clinical specification in the category of "psychological factors affecting medical condition" and eliminate the need for the highly criticized DSM classification of somatoform disorders.
