[Bacterial conjunctivitis--diagnosis and therapy update].

Acute bacterial conjunctivitis is a common health-care issue for the general practitioner and the ophthalmologist. Signs and symptoms usually allow a correct diagnosis without conjunctival swab. Primary microbiological investigations are recommended in newborns, immunocompromised patients and cases of hyperacute conjunctivitis. Of concern are methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains which have been isolated with increasing frequency in the last few years. Studies have demonstrated the faster clinical and microbiological cure of acute bacterial conjunctivitis with topical antibiotics

Antibiotics versus placebo for acute bacterial conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Acute bacterial conjunctivitis is an infection of the conjunctiva and is one of the most common ocular disorders in primary care. Antibiotics are generally prescribed on the basis that they may speed recovery, reduce persistence, and prevent keratitis. However, many cases of acute bacterial conjunctivitis are self-limited, resolving without antibiotic therapy. This Cochrane Review was first published in The Cochrane Library in 1999, then updated in 2006, 2012, and 2022. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and side effects of antibiotic therapy in the management of acute bacterial c

Antibiotics versus placebo for acute bacterial conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Acute bacterial conjunctivitis is an infection of the conjunctiva. Both the palpebral and the bulbar ocular conjunctival surfaces are usually affected and typically become red and inflamed. Antibiotic therapy is widely used for the treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. This Cochrane Review was first published in The Cochrane Library in 1999; updated in 2006 and again in 2012. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of antibiotic therapy in the management of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL (which contains the Cochrane Eyes and Vision

Peripheral ulcerative keratitis triggered by bacterial conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Periphpral ulcerative keratitis (PUK) is a disorder consisting of a crescent-shaped destructive inflammation of the perilimbal corneal stroma. CASE: We present a case of PUK following acute bacterial conjunctivitis in a 60-year-old lady with a history of on-and-off joint pain for two years. After admission to the hospital, she underwent conjunctival resection and was given topical and oral steroids. She was prescribed hydroxychloroquine after confirming the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis with a positive RA factor. CONCLUSION: This report highlights the role of infection as a t

Antibiotics versus placebo for acute bacterial conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: There are concerns about whether antibiotic therapy confers significant clinical benefit in the treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to assess the benefit and harm of antibiotic therapy in the management of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (which contains the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Group Trials Register), MEDLINE, EMBASE, SIGLE, NRR, PubMed and the reference lists of identified trial reports. We used the Science Citation Index to look for artic

Acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Bacteriology and clinical implications.

We report the results of eye culture specimens, obtained from patients under 20 years of age, submitted to the Bacteriology Department of our institution from January 1 through April 30, 1983. A total of 72 specimens were positive for one or more strains of bacteria. The most commonly isolated bacteria was Hemophilus influenzae (34 strains, 42%), followed by Staphylococcus epidermidis (11 strains, 13.75%) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (9 strains, 11.25%). Mean age of patients with H. influenzae (excluding a 20-year-old patient) was 15 months with standard deviation of 13 months. Chloramphenicol

The role of besifloxacin in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of besifloxacin in bacterial conjunctivitis treatment. DATA SOURCES: Searches were made on MEDLINE/PubMed and EMBASE (January 2007 to January 2014) using the terms besifloxacin and Besivance. References from these publications were reviewed for additional resources. Additional information was collected from Bausch & Lomb, the manufacturer of Besivance; www.clinicaltrials.gov; and American Academy of Ophthalmology. STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: English-language documents were reviewed for pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety, with priorit

Integrated analysis of three bacterial conjunctivitis trials of besifloxacin ophthalmic suspension, 0.6%: etiology of bacterial conjunctivitis and antibacterial susceptibility profile.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this paper is to report on the bacterial species isolated from patients with bacterial conjunctivitis participating in three clinical trials of besifloxacin ophthalmic suspension, 0.6%, and their in vitro antibacterial susceptibility profiles. METHODS: Microbial data from three clinical studies, conducted at multiple clinical sites in the US and Asia were integrated. Species were identified at a central laboratory, and minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined for various antibiotics, including β-lactams, fluoroquinolones, and macrolides. RESULTS: A total o

[Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Current Aspects of Diagnosis and Therapy].

Bacterial conjunctivitis is a leading cause of infectious conjunctivitis in children and second most common cause in adults. Although often self-limiting, it can lead to complications like corneal scarring and systemic infections in high-risk groups including newborns and immunocompromised patients. Thus, prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential for these vulnerable populations. Common bacterial causes are Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae in adults and Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis in children. Clinical features alone do not reliably identify the causat

Bilateral, chronic, bacterial conjunctivitis in giant fornix syndrome.

Giant fornix syndrome (GFS) results in chronic, relapsing conjunctivitis in elderly patients with enophthalmos and enlarged fornices, in which infectious material collects and perpetuates inflammation. A 98-year-old woman presented with persistent, bilateral, purulent conjunctivitis; corneal epithelial defects and progressive blepharospasm that did not respond to artificial tears, topical antibiotics and steroids and amniotic membrane grafts. Additional findings of deep-set orbits with enlarged upper fornices were diagnostic of GFS. Over the next 2 months, she responded to a combination of top

Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis. Prevention of disastrous results.

Conjunctivitis has many bacterial and viral causes. If the cause is bacterial, treatment with a broad-spectrum antibiotic resolves the problem in 1 to 3 days in almost all cases. If signs and symptoms persist, referral to an ophthalmologist is wise. Most cases of viral conjunctivitis are accompanied by follicular reactions in the inferior fornix, as observed with adult inclusion disease. If dendrites are seen, trifluridine (Viroptic) is preferred for treatment. Referral to an ophthalmologist is advisable because recurrence with scarring and permanent loss of vision is possible. Many topical an

Tear Film Osmolarity in Horses With Bacterial Conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by infectious or non-infectious factors. Infectious conjunctivitis comes in two forms: viral and bacterial. Bacterial conjunctivitis is commonly caused by organisms such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, with the severity of the disease influenced by the specific bacterial species involved. Because both viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are highly contagious, preventive measures are essential to reduce transmission-especially to the unaffected eye. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the tear film osmolality in horses with bacteri

Acute Bacterial Tenonitis and Conjunctivitis following Intravitreal Injection.

A 73-year-old man presented 3 days after intravitreal injection (IVI) with bevacizumab for treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration with pain and redness around the injection site. Examination showed conjunctival edema and injection around the injection site and a central infiltrate at the injection site consistent with infection of Tenon's capsule and the conjunctiva. Infection of a vitreous wick was considered, but vitreous inflammation was not present. Acute bacterial tenonitis and conjunctivitis were diagnosed, and the patient was prescribed topical antibiotic drops. The p

Neisseria sicca: A Rare Cause of Bacterial Conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND Neisseria-associated conjunctivitis is a rare cause of bacterial conjunctivitis in adults, with Neisseria gonorrhoeae as the primarily identified infectious strain. Here, we present a rare case of bacterial conjunctivitis due to Neisseria sicca in a 34-year-old immunocompetent man with no prior medical or ocular history. CASE REPORT A 34-year-old man with no significant past medical or ocular history presented with a 3-day history of left periorbital edema, ocular pain, and copious purulent discharge. Bacterial conjunctivitis was suspected due to the rapidity of onset and purulence.
