Photodegradation Behavior of Nanosilica-Filled PMMA Composite: Cooperative Effect of Mixed Solvents and Interfacial Functional Groups.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and its composites are widely used in industrial applications; therefore, their durability is of great concern. In this study, the photooxidative degradation behavior of nanosilica-filled PMMA composite films and the cooperative effect of mixed solvents containing tetrahydrofuran (THF) and chloroform (TCM), as well as interfacial functional groups, was investigated. The surface functional groups of nanosilica fillers, such as polar, aryl, and alkyl moieties, significantly affect the photodegradation kinetics and pathways for PMMA. The key process lies in the mo

Evaluation of cooperative systems on driver behavior in heavy fog condition based on a driving simulator.

This paper studies the effectiveness of fog warning systems on driving performance and traffic safety in heavy fog condition. A comparison study was conducted for four scenarios in heavy fog condition. First, a series of indexes corresponding to driving speed adjustments and surrogate measures of safety was obtained to explore the impacts that fog warning systems have on driving behavior and traffic safety when approaching a fog area. This study divided the analyzed road into three different zones (clear zone, transition zone, and fog zone) according to visibility levels. Then, multivariate an

Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation in epilepsy patients enhances cooperative behavior in the prisoner's dilemma task.

The vagus nerve constitutes a key link between the autonomic and the central nervous system. Previous studies provide evidence for the impac … a well-established paradigm, i.e., the prisoner's dilemma, we investigate effects of stimulation on cooperative behavior, as well as interactions of stimulation effects with patient characteristics. A repeated-measures ANOVA and a linear mixed-effects model provide converging evidence that tVNS boosts cooperation. Post-hoc correlations reveal that this effect varies a …

Determination of ligand binding constants for the iron-molybdenum cofactor of nitrogenase: monomers, multimers, and cooperative behavior.

Equilibrium titrations in N-methylformamide (NMF) of G-25 gel filtered (ox)-state FeMo cofactor [FeMoco(ox)] from Azotobacter vinelandii nitrogenase were carried out using sodium ethanethiolate and followed using UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy. For Fe-Moco(ox), a non-linear least squares (NLLSQ) fit to the data indicated a strong equilibrium thiolate-binding step with Keq = 1.3+/-0.2x10(6) M(-1). With 245 molar excess imidazole, cooperative binding of three ethanethiolates was observed. The best NLLSQ fit gave Keq=2.0+/-0.1x10(5) M(-2) and a Hill coefficient n=2.0+/-0.3. A Scatchard plot of th

Feedback, competition, and cooperation: Behavioral effects of gamification elements in individual and team settings.

Gamification aims to increase user motivation and engagement by incorporating game design elements into non-game contexts. This study examines how two commonly used gamification elements (progress bars and leaderboards) shape user engagement and contribution behaviors within different participation structures (individual and team-based), drawing on Self-Determination Theory and Social Interdependence Theory as interpretive frameworks. A six-condition experimental design (N = 219) was implemented on an online interaction platform (Board) designed by the researchers, comparing leaderboards, prog

The EphB6 receptor cooperates with c-Cbl to regulate the behavior of breast cancer cells.

Cancer invasiveness plays a major role in the mortality of patients with solid tumors, and deregulated cell adhesion and migration are suspected to drive invasive behavior. Since Eph receptor tyrosine kinases control both cell attachment and migration, they may act to define the level of cancer invasiveness. EphB6 is an unusual Eph receptor, lacking catalytic capacity due to alterations in its kinase domain. Interestingly, increased metastatic activity is associated with reduced EphB6 receptor expression in several tumor types, including breast cancer. This emphasizes the potential of EphB6 to

Positive and negative cooperativities at subsequent steps of oxygenation regulate the allosteric behavior of multistate sebacylhemoglobin.

Cross-linked human hemoglobin (HbA) is obtained by reaction with bis(3,5-dibromosalicyl) sebacate. Peptide maps and crystallographic analyses confirm the presence of the 10 carbon atom long sebacyl residue cross-linking the two beta82 lysines of the beta-cleft (DecHb). The Adair's constants, obtained from the oxygen binding isotherms, show that at the first step of oxygenation normal hemoglobin and DecHb have a very similar oxygen affinity. In DecHb negative binding cooperativity is present at the second step of oxygenation, which has an affinity 27 times lower than at the first step. Positive

New insights into the cooperative adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) and humic acid in water by powdered activated carbon.

Chromium and humic acid often co-exist in wastewater and source waters, and the removal of chromium through sorption by activated carbon may be greatly influenced by humic acid. In this study, we systematically evaluated concurrent adsorption of humic acid (HA) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in water by powdered activated carbon (PAC) and further, the effect on conversion to trivalent chromium (Cr(III)). Adsorption of both HA and Cr(VI) was significantly enhanced in the dual adsorbate system as compared to treatments with HA or Cr(VI) alone. The removal of HA increased by 16.0% in the presen

Relational Profiles and Cooperative Behavior Among Early Adolescents: A Cross-Cohort Comparison Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined whether early adolescents' relationship profiles and cooperative behavior differed between pre-pandemic and during-pandemic cohorts. Grounded in a person-centered perspective of bonding social capital, the study focused on relationship patterns across parents, peers, and teachers. METHODS: Using data from two nationally representative cohorts of first-year middle school students (2018, n = 2550; 2021, n = 2452; ages 12-13; approximately 50% male) in South Korea, latent profile analysis identified subgroups based on bonding social capital across relational con…

I. Veterans Affairs Cooperative Study of polyenylphosphatidylcholine in alcoholic liver disease: effects on drinking behavior by nurse/physician teams.

BACKGROUND: This multicenter prospective, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of polyenylphosphatidylcholine against the progression of liver fibrosis toward cirrhosis in alcoholics. Seven hundred eighty-nine alcoholics with an average intake of 16 drinks per day were enrolled. To control excessive drinking, patients were referred to a standard 12-step-based alcoholism treatment program, but most patients refused to attend. Accordingly, study follow-up procedures incorporated the essential features of the brief-intervention approach. An

Resistance or Cooperation? Actor and Partner Effects of Hostile and Benevolent Sexism on Observed Behavior in Couples' Interactions.

Hostile sexism evokes women's resistance necessitating benevolent sexism to promote cross-gender cooperation. Addressing inconsistent, primarily self-report evidence for ambivalent sexism theory principles, we test the actor and partner effects of sexist attitudes on behaviors exhibited within heterosexual couples' interactions (N = 855 dyadic interactions). Showing that men's hostile sexism likely incites resistance, men's hostile sexism predicted more hostile and less responsive behavior by men and their women partners. Providing new behavioral evidence that benevolent sexism may promote het

Narrowly and Broadly Tuned Peripheral Gustatory Neurons Cooperate to Encode Three Behaviorally Relevant Stimulus Categories.

Peripheral taste neurons vary in tuning breadth; some respond selectively to a single stimulus (narrowly tuned), and others respond to multiple stimuli (broadly tuned). How these differences contribute to taste coding remains unclear. We recorded calcium responses from 280 geniculate ganglion neurons to five or seven taste stimuli in male and female mice. Using five stimuli, 47% of neurons were narrowly tuned, while 53% responded to multiple stimuli. Hierarchical cluster analysis revealed five functional groups with five stimuli and six with seven stimuli, suggesting that the number of cluster

Are risky driving, health behaviors, and cardiometabolic risk interrelated? Findings from the cooper center longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: While risky driving behaviors and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors both have deleterious consequences, they are rarely targeted jointly. The present study examines the associations between risky driving behaviors, health-related behaviors, and cardiometabolic risk factors among adults over time. METHODS: Longitudinal examination of 17,846 adults who attended a preventive medicine clinic (Dallas, TX) at least twice (1988-2024). The primary independent variables were risky driving behaviors: not wearing a seat belt, driving after drinking alcohol, angry driving, and speeding, as well as

How are nurses' individual and their colleagues' diversity factors associated with their cooperation behaviors in teams? - Results of an online factorial survey.

BACKGROUND: Diversity within nursing teams in Germany increases due to staff shortages, nurse migration and the current academization of the profession. Little is known about how nurse’s own diversity factors and those of team members impact nurse’s perception and behavior in team situations. This study examines if and how nurses differentiate in the assessment of their colleagues’ nursing abilities in basic care, i.e. patient’s personal hygiene and treatment care, i.e. the set-up of an infusion, as well as their willingness to swap shifts with colleagues. METHODS: A quasi-experimental, cross-

The impact of face-to-face social exclusion on university students' interpersonal cooperation behavior: a hyperscanning study based on fNIRS.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on social exclusion adopt virtual paradigms focusing on unilateral responses, while neglecting real-world face-to-face interaction and its neural basis. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning allows recording of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) during dyadic interaction, providing a novel approach for investigating interpersonal cooperation. METHODS: This study recruited 24 dyads of college students randomly assigned to social exclusion and inclusion groups. Using fNIRS hyperscanning combined with a face-to-face rejection paradigm and th

Fate of Dissolved Organic Matter and Cooperation Behavior of Coagulation: Fenton Combined with MBR Treatment for Pharmaceutical Tail Water.

In this study, the treatment of pharmaceutical tail water (PTW) by coagulation, Fenton combined with membrane bioreactor (MBR), was studied. Optimal parameters were obtained according to batch experiment and central composite design (CCD). Results showed that Polymeric Ferric Sulfate (PFS) was the best coagulant for original pharmaceutical tailwater due to less dosage and higher removal efficiency to TOC, COD, NH4+-N and UV254m, with the optimized pH = 7.25 and 0.53 g/L PFS dosage. The best coagulation performance was achieved when the mixer was stirred at 250 rpm for 3 min, 60 rpm for 10 min,
