Corneal first aid lens: Collagen-based hydrogels loading aFGF as contact lens for treating corneal injuries.

Severe corneal injuries can cause visual impairment even blindness. Surgically stitching or implanting biomaterials have been developed, but their implementation requires professional surgeons, failing to address the immediate need of medical treatment. The pressing challenge lies in developing multifunctional biomaterials that enable self-management of corneal injuries. This study introduces collagen-based hydrogels that can be used as contact lenses, incorporating macromolecular collagen into common polymer materials via a dual-step orthogonal cross-linking process. This method ensures super…

Oxidative stress in corneal injuries of different origin: Utilization of 3D human corneal epithelial tissue model.

The purpose of the current work was to utilize a three dimensional (3D) corneal epithelial tissue model to study dry eye disease and oxidative stress-related corneal epithelial injuries for the advancement of ocular therapeutics. Air-liquid interface cultures of normal human corneal epithelial cells were used to produce 3D corneal epithelial tissues appropriate for physiologically relevant exposure to environmental factors. Oxidative stress was generated by exposing the tissues to non-toxic doses of ultraviolet radiation (UV), hydrogen peroxide, vesicating agent nitrogen mustard, or desiccatin

The role of oxidative stress in corneal diseases and injuries.

In various corneal injuries (such as chemical burns or irradiation of corneas with UVB radiation) and ocular diseases (e.g. dry eye disease, keratokonus, bullous keratopathy, Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy), the expressions of malondialdehyde (a marker of lipid peroxidation) and nitrotyrosine (a marker of oxidative stress) appeared in cells of individual corneal layers and conjunctival cells (dry eye disease). This is in contrast to healthy corneas in which negligible levels of malondialdehyde and no expressions of nitrotyrosine are present. The injured or diseased corneas reveal decreased capac…

Endogenous Therapeutic Agents for Acute Corneal and Ocular Surface Injuries.

Acute corneal injuries vary greatly in morbidity, but can cause severe cases of vision loss. Among these injuries are mechanical corneal traumas and acute chemical burns. The current standard of care in the acute phase of management is aimed at reducing the offending agent, pain management, and infection prevention; however, corneal scarring and limbal stem cell deficiency may result even after the acute management of severe corneal injuries. In the most serious cases, surgical intervention, including cornea or stem cell transplantation, may be required to restore functional vision. As such, t…

[Corneal and ocular surface injuries caused by occult foreign bodies].

The first patient complained of red eye, photophobia, and difficulty in eye-opening of the right eye for 5 months. The second patient complained of grinding pain and difficulty in eye-opening of the left eye for 1 week. The third patient complained of repeated red eye and blurred vision in the left eye for half a year. After detailed examination, a blue suture thread approximately 2 mm in length with a knot was found in the mucosal fold of the first patient, a bee sting was embedded in the middle of the meibomian gland duct in the upper eyelid of the second patient, a glassy foreign body was f

Corneal metallic foreign body injuries due to suboptimal ocular protection.

Retrospective review of 100 consecutive presentations of metallic corneal foreign body to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital emergency department was undertaken between November and December 2009. The majority of the patients (97%) were male with a mean age of 42 ± 13 years (range 19-73 years). The most common mode of injury was grinding (88%). Nearly half (45%) of patients were wearing "safety eye wear" at the time of injury. Combination of 25-gauge needle and burr was the commonest method employed for removal of foreign body. Overall, 88% (n = 88) cases healed with corneal scar at the

Injuries to the iris and corneal endothelium in intraocular surgeries.

The changes in the corneal endothelium at the centre of the cornea were followed after intracapsular cataract extraction and penetrating keratoplasty, by means of specular microscopy and morphometry using a computerized image analyzer. The corneal endothelium undergoes progressive transformation in its size over a period of more than 1 year. In penetrating keratoplasty, progressive increase in the cell size appears to occur over a longer postoperative period. The injury to the iris leaves permanent tissue defects and this is due to insufficient fibroblastic activity of the iris. Iris injury pr

Managing corneal foreign body injuries in a primary eye care setting.

Corneal foreign body removal is a common office-based procedure conducted by primary eye care practitioners globally. In Australia and New Zealand, optometry is a therapeutic profession capable of removing embedded corneal foreign bodies. In Australia, it has been estimated that ocular foreign bodies account for more than 44% of eye-related presentations to a hospital emergency department. Studies have shown that the majority of these patients can be effectively managed by the community optometrist, reducing the burden on hospital admissions. Regardless of the setting, the use of standardised ter

Corneal injury: Clinical and molecular aspects.

Currently, over 10 million people worldwide are affected by corneal blindness. Corneal trauma and disease can cause irreversible distortions to the normal structure and physiology of the cornea often leading to corneal transplantation. However, donors are in short supply and risk of rejection is an ever-present concern. Although significant progress has been made in recent years, the wound healing cascade remains complex and not fully understood. Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine are currently at the apex of investigation in the pursuit of novel corneal therapeutics. This review uni
