PURPOSE: To describe 3 cases with deep corneal stromal opacity that occurred several months after corneal cross-linking.
METHODS: A 36-year-old man, a 19-year-old man, and a 14-year-old girl underwent corneal cross-linking for their progressive keratoconus. Corneal cross-linking was performed according to the Dresden protocol. The corneal epithelium was ablated using an excimer laser in 2 cases and manually in 1 case. After 30 minutes of riboflavin presoaking, hypotonic riboflavin solution was applied until the corneal stroma swelled, after which the eyes were exposed to ultraviolet irradiati

BACKGROUND: Investigating the efficacy and safety of phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in corneal opacities.
MET … ith final visual outcome. However, a statistically significant relationship between the severity of corneal opacity and improvement range in BCVA (r = - 0.782, P = 0.001) was found by our OCT grading method.
CONCLUSIONS: Phacoemulsification and IOL implantation in selected cases of coexisting cataracts and corneal opacities is safe that can provide suboptimal bu …

We present six patients with typical Hallermann-Streiff syndrome. All have microphthalmia and were operated for congenital cataract. Three of the patients developed a severe glaucoma and one patient presented repeated uveal effusions. Five of our patients have the same pattern of corneal stromal opacities. The opacities are ill defined and bilateral; the stroma between the opacities is clear. The opacities are observed in two children around the age of 5. Follow up of 10 years did not reveal a manifest increase of the lesions. The authors believe that corneal stromal opacities are a feature of

The clinical course and histopathological findings in 17 cases of congenital corneal opacity treated by penetrating keratoplasty are described. On the basis of the histopathological findings 9 of the cases of corneal opacity were diagnosed as Peter's anomaly, 5 cases as sclerocornea or mesenchymal dysgenesis, 2 as choristoma, and 1 case as leukoma. Only 2 of the corneal grafts performed in these infants remained clear. The underlying disease in the 2 cases where surgery was successful was Peter's anomaly, with a clear corneal periphery. From the analysis of the corneal buttons the authors dedu…

Naturally occurring, oval opacities at the junction of the middle and inferior thirds of the cornea were found in an experimental beagle dog colony and were examined by light and electron microscopy. Abnormalities were limited to the anterior stroma and consisted of extracellular rhomboid crystalline spaces. Spherical or elliptical vacuolar spaces, sometimes containing electron-dense amorphous debris, distorted stromal lamellae. Stromal keratocytes in affected areas revealed a range of changes from hyperplasia of organelles to degeneration and necrosis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the visual outcome after optical sector iridectomy in cases of corneal opacities.
METHODS: Seventeen eyes of 17 patients with preoperative visual acuity of <6/60 in the affected eye underwent sector iridectomy in a prospective clinical study at a tertiary eye care center. Of 17 cases, 11 had corneal opacities after healed keratitis, four after trauma, and one each due to alkali burns or trachoma. The sector iridectomy was undertaken in cases in which one sector of the cornea and lens was fairly clear. Success was defined as attainment of ambulatory visual acuity of 6/60 o

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda is an inherited skeletal dysplasia involving the spine and epiphyses of long bones with onset in childhood, giving rise to disproportionate short stature and degenerative spine and hip disease. Associated ocular disease is not commonly recognized. We report a patient with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda and a unique pattern of corneal opacities. Bilateral, irregularly shaped, nodular, deeply posterior opacities confined to the peripheral cornea were noted in this patient. A central stromal granularity was also seen. Minimal visual loss was associated with

PURPOSE: To report a case of acute bilateral corneal opacity related to bacterial blepharoconjunctivitis.
METHODS: Interventional case report. An 18-month-old boy had bilateral red eyes with discharge and periorbital eczema. Bilateral corneal opacity suddenly developed 1 week later.
RESULTS: All clinical assessments and laboratory evaluations of viral infection and autoimmune profiles were negative except for growth of coagulase-negative staphylococcus and propionibacterium acnes from conjunctival discharge. After systemic and topical antibiotic treatment, the opacity and inflammation of bot…

BACKGROUND: Angiogenin (ANG), a component of tears, is involved in the innate immune system and is related with inflammatory disease. We investigated whether ANG has an immune modulatory function in human corneal fibroblasts (HCFs).
METHODS: HCFs were cultured from excised corneal tissues. The gene or protein expression levels of interleukin (IL)-1beta (β), IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, complements, toll-like receptor (TLR)4, myeloid differentiation primary response gene (MYD)88, TANK-binding kinase (TBK)1, IkappaB kinase-epsilon (IKK-ε) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) were analyzed with or with

Bilateral stromal corneal opacity is a differential diagnostic challenge for ophthalmologists. In this article 2 female patients aged 30 and 36 years old, respectively, with different degrees of expression of stromal diffuse corneal opacity will be presented. Patient 1 was of short stature (114 cm) and patient 2 was 172 cm in size. Both patients exhibited altered joint structures of the hands and feet and diffuse stromal corneal opacity. Furthermore, patient 1 had both mitral and aortal insufficiencies and patient 2 an aorta insufficiency. The stromal diffuse corneal opacity was indicative of …
