Efficacy of metacognitive therapy for hypoactive sexual desire disorder among Iranian couples.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of present study was to compare the efficacy of metacognitive therapy (MCT) against Masters-Johnson sex therapy (MJST) for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in Iranian couples. METHODS: A randomized treatment trial was conducted. Participants were recruited from the family counseling clinics in Tehran and Isfahan. All were suffering from HSDD as defined by DSM-IV-R criteria. They were assigned randomly to two groups that received 10 sessions of either MCT or MJST. A sexual desire questionnaire was completed by participants before and after therapy and at 6-month foll

Effects of coping-oriented couples therapy on depression: a randomized clinical trial.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of treating depression with coping-oriented couples therapy (COCT) as compared with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT; A. T. Beck, C. Ward, & M. Mendelson, 1961) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT; M. M. Weissman, J. C. Markowitz, & G. L. Klerman, 2000). Sixty couples, including 1 clinically depressed partner, completed pre- and posttest questionnaires as well as follow-up assessments at 6-month intervals over the subsequent 1.5 years. Effects of the 3 treatments on depressive symptomatology assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory (A.…

Domestic violence in veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder who seek couples therapy.

Domestic violence rates among veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are higher than those of the general population. Individuals who have been diagnosed with PTSD who seek couples therapy with their partners constitute an understudied population. Self-report measures of domestic violence, relationship satisfaction, and intimacy were administered at intake to 179 couples seeking relationship therapy at a Veterans Affairs clinic. Couples in which the veteran was diagnosed with combat-related PTSD were compared with two other groups based on the veteran's primary diagnosis (depressio…

Empirically Supported Couple Therapy Models for Couple Relationship Distress: A Replication and Update.

This systematic review replicated and updated Baucom and colleagues' (1998) evaluation of empirically supported treatments (ESTs) for couple relationship distress using the Chambless criteria, the primary framework used by the American Psychological Association to classify ESTs. Applying these criteria to 40 eligible studies, we found that, in contrast to Baucom and colleagues, no couple therapy models met the standards for strong empirical support; insufficient sample size and lack of independent replication were the most frequent limitations. Seven models demonstrated modest support: behavio

The Experience of Couples in the Process of Treatment of Pathological Gambling: Couple vs. Individual Therapy.

Context: Couple treatment for pathological gambling is an innovative strategy. There are some results supporting its potential effectiveness, but little is known about the subjective experiences of the participants. Objective: The aim of this article is to document the experiences of gamblers and their partners participating in one of two treatments, namely individual or couple. Method: In a study aiming to evaluate the efficacy of the Integrative Couple Treatment for Pathological Gambling (ICT-PG), couples who were entering specialized treatment for the addiction of one member who was a patho

Impact of marital and psychological distress on therapeutic alliance in couples undergoing couple therapy.

In this study, we describe the psychometric properties of the Couple Therapy Alliance Scale--revised (CTAS-r) and investigates the impact of marital and psychiatric distress on alliance. Seventy-nine couples in therapy completed a French version of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale and of the Psychiatric Symptoms Index at session one, and a French version of the CTAS-r at session three. Results indicate that the French version of the CTAS-r has adequate psychometric properties, although the subscales of the instrument are highly intercorrelated. Furthermore, marital adjustment predicts alliance scor

Adopting a couples' approach to treating chronic cancer-related fatigue: a single-arm pilot trial of a web-based cognitive therapy for couples.

PURPOSE: Many cancer survivors experience chronic cancer-related fatigue (CCRF). While most psychosocial interventions focus exclusively on cancer survivors themselves, increasing evidence suggests that involving partners may enhance and broaden the benefits of these interventions. The primary objective of this study was to assess the acceptability and potential efficacy of COMPANION, a web-based mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for couples (15-20 weeks). Additionally, we examined the feasibility of the trial procedures. METHODS: This single-arm pilot trial included cancer survivors and th

Women with mood disorders and couples conflict: menopause symptom improvement, after group therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Although a public health crisis, intimate partner violence (IPV) has been understudied for middle-aged women with mood disorders during their perimenopausal and postmenopausal years. The aims of this study were to examine the relationship between IPV and hot flashes/night sweats (HF/NS) frequency and severity among women with mood disorders and to test whether the effect of cognitive behavioral group therapy on menopausal symptoms differs between those with and without IPV at baseline and post-test. METHODS: Of 59 participants from a mood disorders outpatient clinic enrolled in the

Implementing Behavioral Couples Therapy for Substance Use Disorders in Real-World Clinical Practice.

Behavioral couple therapy (BCT) is an evidence-based, manualized treatment that has been primarily developed to treat alcohol use disorder. The treatment model leverages the intimate partner relationship to support recovery. Although the efficacy of BCT is well-supported in randomized controlled trials, little attention has been given to the translation of BCT to everyday practice settings. This article presents recommendations for implementing BCT in such settings. We describe a stepwise approach for getting a couple into BCT and determining whether it is an appropriate treatment for the coup

Group Versus Standard Behavioral Couples' Therapy for Alcohol Use Disorder Patients: Cost-Effectiveness.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the costs and cost-effectiveness of two treatments for 101 alcohol use disorder patients and their intimate partners--group behavioral couples' therapy plus individual-based treatment (G-BCT), or standard behavioral couples' therapy plus individual-based treatment (S-BCT). METHOD: We estimated the per-patient cost of each intervention using a microcosting approach that allowed us to estimate costs of specific components in each intervention as well as the overall total costs. Using simple means analysis and multiple regression models, we es

Client Perspectives of Premature Discontinuation in Couple Therapy.

Premature discontinuation, defined as unilateral termination before goal completion against therapist advice, affects approximately 36% of couples who begin therapy. While research often examines factors predicting premature discontinuation, few studies directly ask clients their reasons for stopping. This study explored these reasons by surveying 160 individuals (61% female, 38% male, 1% other; primarily aged 25-44; 92% heterosexual relationships; median income $50-60k) who prematurely discontinued couple therapy without discussing the decision with their therapist. The sample was predominant

Couple Therapy and Vaginismus: A Single Case Approach.

Although Vaginismus, or an involuntary contraction of the vaginal muscles, is one of the reasons sexual intercourse difficulty is relatively common in Iran, few studies have addressed it. This research is a single-case type (AB) design. Initially, a pretest was taken from all participants. The number of sessions was estimated between 4 and 6 sessions, and the duration of each session was 45-60 minutes. Couple therapy sessions were conducted by an individual with a PhD in sexual and reproductive health. An FSFI questionnaire was completed before counseling, just after counseling, and 4 weeks af

A Dyadic Analysis of Attachment Insecurities and Romantic Disengagement among Couples Seeking Relationship Therapy.

This study sought to assess the role of attachment insecurities on romantic disengagement among couples seeking relationship therapy. Dyadic associations were examined between attachment insecurities and romantic disengagement, accounting for depression, relationship satisfaction, and commitment, using a sample of 171 couples. Partners completed the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale and the Romantic Disengagement Scale. Path analysis revealed that attachment-related avoidance, but not anxiety, was associated with romantic disengagement. Men's attachment-related anxiety was related to gr

HIV transmission in discordant couples in Africa in the context of antiretroviral therapy availability.

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to understand the basis of continued HIV-1 transmission in Zambian and Rwandan HIV-1-discordant couples in the context of antiretroviral therapy (ART). DESIGN: We identified nine Zambian and seven Rwandan acutely infected, epidemiologically-linked couples from government couples' voluntary counseling and testing (CVCT) clinics where transmitting partners reported being on ART near the time of transmission. METHODS: We quantified viral load and plasma antiretroviral drug concentrations near the time of transmission and used these as surrogate measures for adherence.

Post-Therapy Trajectories Following Brief Systemic Couple Therapy for Parents.

This study examined post-therapy trajectories among parent couples who received either the Integrative Brief Systemic Intervention (IBSI)-targeting both romantic and coparenting relationships-or Brief Systemic Therapy as usual (BST-as-usual). Based on previous results showing comparable post-treatment improvements across conditions, participants were analyzed together to identify the typical patterns of change couples follow after therapy. We assessed whether distinct trajectory groups could be identified over the 1-year follow-up and examined whether treatment-related variables (therapy condi

Thinking under fire: Mentalization-based couple therapy for high conflict and domestically abusive couples'.

BACKGROUND: The question of working psychotherapeutically with high conflict and domestically abusive couples is one that continues to raise anxieties within the field. AIMS: Embracing a relational approach offers an alternative perspective to the more familiar individual-based treatment interventions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Drawing on my therapy with a married couple who presented in a crisis following an abusive incident, I will outline how I approached the assessment, my understanding of their presenting problem and the basis on which the therapy was conducted. RESULTS: During the eight

A description of heterosexual couples' sexual adjustment to androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVE: It is estimated that 600,000 men are currently living in North America with castrate levels of testosterone as a result of androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer. The goal of this study was to explore how patients and their partners adjust to changes associated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). METHODS: Eighteen couples were interviewed regarding their adjustment to ADT side effects. RESULTS: Three distinct patterns of adjustment were observed. One group of couples had assumed sex to be impossible after commencing ADT, and quickly accepted the loss of sex in excha

Early therapeutic alliance and trajectories of change across in-person therapy and teletherapy with couples.

OBJECTIVE: Teletherapy has demonstrated outcomes comparable to in-person treatment, yet less is known about how early therapeutic processes and change trajectories unfold across modalities in couple therapy. This study examined whether early alliance predicts outcomes and change trajectories and whether these associations differ by modality and initial distress. METHOD: Data were drawn from 266 different-sex couples at university-based training clinics (2020-2024). Alliance was assessed via the Session Rating Scale (SRS) and functioning via the Outcome Rating Scale (ORS), using dyadic models

Continuity Therapy for couples living with acquired brain injury: a non-randomised uncontrolled feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Brain injuries can have a significant negative impact on marriages/partnerships. Available interventions either require specialists trained in relationship therapy (which most rehabilitation services have no access to) or offer more structured manualised approaches that are restricted in scope and have generally led to only small improvements. Continuity Therapy was developed to provide a manualised approach that can be delivered by brain injury clinicians without specialist training in relationship therapy, and that addresses a broader range of relationship issues. Study aims were

[Diagnosis and therapy of sterile marriages. Retrospective studies on the sterility of 500 childless couples].

In the retrospective analysis of 500 involuntarily childless couples the following results were observed: The pregnancy rate was 37.2%. The age of the women did not influence the conception rate significantly. Women with a sterility of less than 5 years duration had a statistically higher conception rate than those with longer lasting sterility. Patients with oligomenorrhea had a significantly higher pregnancy rate than those with normal menstrual cycle. Cyclofenil therapy resulted in a significantly higher conception rate than treatment without ovulation inducing compounds. Homologeous insemi
