The cranial nerves IX and X emerge from medulla oblongata and have motor, sensory, and parasympathetic functions. Some of these are amenable to neurophysiological assessment. It is often hard to separate the individual contribution of each nerve; in fact, some of the techniques are indeed a composite functional measure of both nerves. The main methods are the evaluation of the swallowing function (combined IX and X), laryngeal electromyogram (predominant motor vagal function), and heart rate variability (predominant parasympathetic vagal function). This review describes, therefore, the techniq…

This Special Issue entitled "Cranial Nerves: phylogeny, ontogeny, morphology and clinical significance" has been divided into two consecutive volumes. This second volume is devoted to morphology and clinical relevance. Articles in this volume examine these topics from a macroscopic point of view and with a surgical interest. This volume includes articles on oculomotor nerves III, IV, and VI and their course in the orbit; intracranial and extracranial views of the V and VII pairs; and branching patterns of IX, X, XI, and XII pairs with medical significance. Together, these articles provide a ge…

The present contribution adopts various points of view to discuss the terminology of the twelve nervi craniales. These are paired nerves and have dual names, terms with Roman ordinal numerals, i.e., the nerves are numbered in the top-to-bottom direction, and descriptive historical names. The time of origin and motivation behind the investigated terms are determined. The majority of terms come from the 17th and 18th centuries. The motivation behind most of them is (a) nerve localization, as this is in conformity with anatomical nomenclature in general, (b) nerve function, and rarely (c) nerve a

The cranial nerves are often involved in head and neck malignancies. Some malignancies have a strong propensity to show perineural spread. Cranial nerve palsy may be the presenting sign of metastatic disease to the skull base. Like metastatic disease to the lungs or liver, the cranial nerves themselves may be the site of metastatic disease. In addition, cranial nerves can be injured by radiation therapy or sacrificed during surgical treatment. This paper focuses on the imaging features of perineural infiltration, skull base neural foramen involvement and metastatic disease in the cranial nerve…

Knowledge of the nuclear origins and the normal course of the cranial nerves, and their functional components, is important in any evaluation of cranial neuropathy. MR imaging allows detailed evaluation of cranial nerve anatomy and pathology. Newer MR sequences allow more sensitive methods of detecting pathology and determining the cause of cranial neuropathy. The correlation of clinical findings with MR images will allow for more definitive evaluation.

Movements of the eye are produced by six extraocular muscles innervated by three cranial nerves: the oculomotor (III), the trochlear (IV), and the abducens (VI). These cranial nerves are discussed together because of the interrelated nuclear origins, neural pathways, and motor functions. The normal anatomic pathway of these three nerves is presented. The clinical and pathologic manifestations of lesions producing both isolated and complex palsies of these nerves are discussed along with imaging correlation.

In order to assess the value of MRI in the depiction of intracranial nerves, we retrospectively reviewed 60 patients investigated over a 2-year period. The purposes of this study were: 1) to determine the score of MRI in detecting cranial nerves III to XII, and 2) to establish accurate landmarks for easy detection of these nerves. Cranial nerves III, V, VII and VIII are well seen (70 to 100%), very often on axial, sagittal and coronal sections. Nerves IX to XII are correctly studied only on axial planes (81 and 83%), but it is difficult to distinguish between the vagus nerve and the glossophar…
