Croton sylvaticus, a tropical African plant, is traditionally used to treat several diseases, including fever, inflammation, and malaria. Essential oils (EOs) from the plant's leaves, roots, and trunk bark were obtained by hydrodistillation, and their chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major constituents identified were virdiflorene (18.13 ± 0.46%) in root EO, (E)-β-caryophyllene (18.40 ± 0.60%) in trunk bark EO, and farnesyl acetone (15.26 ± 0.25%) in leaf EO. Notably, Cameroonian C. sylvaticus leaf EO exhibited a distinct and newly describe

It has been shown previously that malnourished rats are resistant to acute gastric lesions but not to subchronic gastric ulceration. It also has been demonstrated that the essential oil obtained from the bark of Croton cajucara (Sacaca) has antiulcer properties. In the present study, the ability of this essential oil to prevent the formation of gastric ulcers in rats fed a diet with 17% protein (normoproteic rats) or 6% protein (malnourished rats) was investigated. At a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight, orally, the essential oil significantly reduced the gastric injury caused by indomethacin (25%

Cardiovascular effects of the essential oil of Croton argyrophylloides Muell. Arg. (EOCA) were investigated in normotensive rats. In saline-pretreated anesthetized or conscious rats, intravenous (i.v.) injection of the EOCA induced dose-dependent hypotension. Dose-dependent tachycardia was observed only in conscious rats. In anesthetized rats, cervical bivagotomy failed to enhance EOCA-induced hypotension but unmasked significant bradycardia. In conscious rats, i.v. pretreatment with methylatropine, but not with atenolol or L-NAME, reduced both hypotensive and tachycardiac responses to EOCA. H

Rat pleurisy was induced by intrapleural injection of 0.1 ml of 1% kaolin or 1% croton oil, and the time courses of pleural fluid accumulation and white cell migration were examined. Peak pleural fluid accumulation was observed at respectively 5 and 16 h after the inciter injection. Migration of white cells into the pleural cavity showed a peak at respectively 7 or 24 h after each inciter. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes were predominant in pleural cells of kaolin pleurisy at 3 h, while in croton-oil pleurisy the major white cells were mononuclear cells and lymphocytes at 3 h, and polymorphonucle…

Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is associated with local release of inflammatory mediators such as reactive oxygen species and regulated by various antioxidative enzymes and antioxidants. Although Nqo1 is involved in antioxidative reactions and detoxification, its role in ICD remains unknown. Nqo1-deficient mice exhibited augmented ear swelling accompanied by neutrophil infiltration in the croton oil-induced mouse ICD model. In the skin of Nqo1-deficient mice, Vγ5Vδ1+ dendritic epidermal T cells (DETCs), which are known to suppress ICD, were severely reduced. As the transfer of DETCs into Nq…

Croton linearis Jacq. is an aromatic shrub that has been utilized in traditional medicine in the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Cuba. Recent studies have revealed the antiprotozoal potential of its leaves. The present work is aimed to identify the volatile constituents of essential oil from the stems of C. linearis (CLS-EO) and evaluate its in vitro antileishmanial activity. In addition, an in silico study of the molecular interactions was performed using molecular docking. A gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis of CLS-EO identified 1,8-cineole (27.8%), α-pinene (11.1%), cis-sabinene (8.1%),

A hemorrhoid model was prepared by means of application of croton oil onto the recto-anus of rats. Cotton swab soaked with the inducer, which consisted of water, pyridine, diethylether and 6% croton oil in diethylether, was inserted into the anus. The following conditions were found to be optimal for preparing the model: cotton swab containing 0.16 ml of the inducer solution was applied to the anus of a 6 week-old rat (body wt. about 140 g) for 10 sec. The edema developed linearly until 7-8 hr after application, and the severity of the edema was sustained almost constantly for more than 24 hr.…

Croton zehntneri, a plant native to northeastern Brazil, is widely used in folk medicine to treat gastrointestinal problems and has rich essential oil content. The effects of the essential oil of Croton zehntneri (EOCZ) and its main constituent anethole on several models of gastric lesions were studied in mice and rats. Oral treatment with EOCZ and anethole, both at doses of 30-300 mg/kg, caused similar and dose-dependent gastroprotection against ethanol- and indomethacin-induced gastric damage, but did not change cold-restraint stress-induced ulcers in rats. Furthermore, EOCZ and anethole (bo
