QTL Mapping of Heat Tolerance in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) at Adult Stage.

Heat stress during cucumber production often leads to sunburn of leaves, growth retardation of stems and roots, fruit malformation, and even plant death, which have a great impact on the fruit quality and yield. However, no studies on the genetic inheritance and quantitative trait locus mapping of heat tolerance in cucumber at the adult stage have been reported yet. In this study, a set of 86 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from "99281" (heat-tolerant) and "931" (heat-sensitive) were used to identify the heat tolerance QTL in summer 2018, 2019, and 2020. Eight-week-old plants were expo

Several Yeast Species Induce Iron Deficiency Responses in Cucumber Plants (Cucumis sativus L.).

Iron (Fe) deficiency is a first-order agronomic problem that causes a significant decrease in crop yield and quality. Paradoxically, Fe is very abundant in most soils, mainly in its oxidized form, but is poorly soluble and with low availability for plants. In order to alleviate this situation, plants develop different morphological and physiological Fe-deficiency responses, mainly in their roots, to facilitate Fe mobilization and acquisition. Even so, Fe fertilizers, mainly Fe chelates, are widely used in modern agriculture, causing environmental problems and increasing the costs of production

Combined effect of copper, cadmium, and lead upon Cucumis sativus growth and bioaccumulation.

Cucumis sativus (cucumber) was tested to assess an ecotoxicity in soils contaminated by the heavy metals copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) separately and in combinations. The toxicity endpoint was plant growth, which was measured as shoot and root lengths after 5 day exposure. Sum of toxic unit (TU) at 50% inhibition for the mixture (EC50mix) was calculated from the dose (TU-based)-response relationships by the Trimmed Spearman-Karber method. Binary metal combinations of Cu+Cd, Cu+Pb, and Cd+Pb produced all three types of interactions; concentration additive (EC50mix=1TU), synergistic (…

Evaluation of different rodenticidal baits against rodent population in cucumber (Cucumis sativus) crop fields.

The baits used consisted of 2% zinc phosphide and 0.005% bromadiolone. The baitings were carried out at the flowering stage of cucumber crop. Double baiting treatments comprising zinc phosphide and bromadiolone in different combinations resulted in better reduction of rodent population and crop damage. Deployment of different rodenticidal treatments saved yield loss from 7.00 to 11.82q/ha. Thus, accomplishing cost benefit ratio of 1:88 to 1:107. Bromadiolone followed by bromadiolone, the most profitable combination is suggested for control of rodent population in cucumber crop fields.
