Gynecologic surgery is associated with various perioperative complications, especially urinary tract injuries. Intraoperative cystoscopy plays an important role in allowing assessment of the bladder to ensure the absence of injuries. OBJECTIVE: Posterior urethral strictures are difficult cases to treat for urologists. Anastomotic open urethroplasty is the major surgical treatment option, and various modifications/manipulations to the procedure have been recommended in the literature. The results of 350 cystoscopic studies, are presented. In 85.7%, urinary incontinence was present, and in 72% one or more of the following symptoms were present: urgency, dysuria, urinary frequency, vesical tenesmus and nycturia. The following were analyzed: age, parity, uroculture and its relation to cystoscopic findings. Most of the patients (64.5%) were 40 to 60 years old, 54% had seven or more deliveries. Most frequent diagnoses were: urethritis alone or with trigonitis (66.8%) and urethral stenosis (meatus) in 31.4%. Uroculture was done in 96% and it was positive in 20% and negative 76%.

This article reviews the case histories of 236 patients who had cystoscopy as part of their major vaginal operations. Seven had cystoscopically detected potential lower urinary tract injuries. Five of these injuries were ureteral obstructions, one occurring after anterior repair, three associated with a McCall culdoplasty, and one associated with a modified Pereyra bladder neck suspension. Cystoscopy and endovesical biopsy of the bladder wall were performed at early stages of investigation prior to the onset of tuberculostatic treatment in 77 patients with destructive renal tuberculosis, verified both bacteriologically and histologically. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to determine whether the use of routine cystoscopy increases lower urinary tract injury detection (bladder and/or ureter) after robotic surgery performed by gynecologic oncologists.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients who presented for robotic hysterectomy from 2009-2012 was performed at 2 separate academic medical centers, one that performed routine cystoscopy and one that did not. Statistical analysis was performed with t tests and χ2 tests.

Flexible carbon dioxide cystoscopy has been carried out in 65 patients using an Olympus BF type 1 TR endoscope (usually used for bronchoscopy). Good views were obtained and comparison with standard cystoscopy confirmed that no lesions were missed. The procedure was well tolerated under local anaesthesia. The flexible cystoscope was particularly useful in examining patients with diverticula, anterior bladder neck lesions or the post-radiation fibrotic pelvis.
