Nuclear lacrimal scan vs dacryocystography.

The lacrimal drainage systems of 78 eyes were studied by technetium scanning at the University of Iowa and, of these, 25 were also subjected to conventional contrast dacryocystography. Twenty-six eyes were asymptomatic for epiphora and normal scans were recorded on all of them. All of the remaining 52 symptomatic eyes had an abnormal lacrimal scan with either a presac or a postsac blockage. In general, there was good correlation with dacryocystography, with the exception of three cases of functional block which had a normal dacryocystogram. Technetium scanning should serve as a valuable tool f…

[The value of digital subtraction dacryocystography].

Dacryocystography is a standard technique for the visualization of the lacrimal pathways. In 1974, Lloyd et al. first described manual subtraction of dacryocystograms. Digital subtraction dacryocystography has definite advantages compared to the conventional dacryocystograms and manual subtraction. Besides the clearly superior topographic display, it also provides information about the functional status of the nasolacrimal pathway. Even though slightly more time consuming, this examination is well justified by the superior quality of the depiction of fine topographic details. Other advantages …

Dacryocystography in a cat with orbital pneumatosis.

A 2-year-old neutered male European short-haired cat was presented for a persistent discharge from the scar of previous left eye enucleation, performed 6 months prior by the referring veterinarian. A surgical exploration of the orbit was performed and retained nictitating membrane glandular and conjunctival tissues were removed. Eleven days later, the cat developed an orbital pneumatosis caused by retrograde movement of air through a patent nasolacrimal system and diagnosed by survey radiographic examination of the skull. Nasolacrimal system patency was assessed by dacryocystography performed …

[Preoperative dacryocystography in patients with epiphora].

In this retrospective study 56 dacryocystographies (DCG) were performed preoperatively in 50 patients with epiphora, due to obstruction in the lacrimal drainage system. We found DCG to be an easy and sufficient examination of patients with uncomplicated epiphora without suspicion of tumour. Tumours in the lacrimal drainage system are rare, and CT-scan or MR-imaging as a routine examination is not indicated. DCG provides a fair prediction regarding success rate of the dacryocystorhinostomy operation (DCR). We found the DCR to be successful in 91.7% when the obstruction was located distally, but

[Dacryocystography in the digital subtraction technic].

Dacryocystorhinostomy is well established as a common surgical approach to the treatment of obstructive epiphora. The importance of a radiological procedure for pre-operative diagnosis and postoperative follow-up is emphasised. Routine imaging (dacryocystography) of the nasolacrimal system is made difficult by the high contrast between bone and air in the sinuses and pharynx, by overlapping structures, and by the very small size of those structures that are of interest. Digital subtraction technique provides significantly improved visualisation even of poorly contrasted structures of the lacri…

[CT dacryocystography: normal findings and pathology].

CT dacryocystography, performed under sterile technique and following local anesthesia, is well tolerated by patients. It is the imaging technique of choice in patients with persistent tearing following clinical examination with non-invasive procedures when patency of the lacrimal drainage system remains uncertain, when a dacryolith or tumor is suspected or following unsuccessful dacryocystorhinostomy. Two techniques are available: instillation or direct cannulation, either initially or after non-visualization of the nasolacrimal system after contrast instillation. Non-specific idiopathic sten…

[Digital subtraction dacryocystography following surgical interventions].

In our series of over 60 dacryocystograms using the digital subtraction technique we report on two cases in which this examination was done … tant detail. The time necessary for both examination techniques is about equal. Digital subtraction dacryocystography has the advantages of immediate availability, the capacity to observe the flow of the contrast medium kinetically and a superior topography display. It is therefore ideal for the evaluation of postoperative topography after lacrimal and sinus surger …

Dynamic MR dacryocystography in patients with epiphora.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the diagnostic value of dynamic MRI dacryocystography (dMR-DCG) for the assessment of nasolacrimal drainage system (NLDS). METHODS: The study population consisted of 35 patients with a history of epiphora. Each patient underwent bilateral dMR-DCG and conventional dacryocystography (DCG) to assess the NLDS. Two radiologists, who were unaware of the clinical data, evaluated the images separately for the level of obstruction at the nasolacrimal passage and the presence or absence of lacrimal sac dilatation. The findings from the dMRI-DCG an…

The value, limitations, and applications of nuclear dacryocystography.

Nuclear dacryocystography is simple, relatively harmless method of evaluating patients suspected of having abnormalities of the nasolacrimal drainage system. A group of normal saline containing approximately 100 muCi of 99mTc-pertechnetate is placed on the conjunctiva near the lateral canthus, and serial scintigrams are obtained as the pertechnetate flows along the tear strips, through the nasolacrimal drainage system, into the nasal fossa. By using a pinhole collimator with a very small aperture (1mm), the canaliculi, the nasolacrimal sac, and the nasolacrimal duct are readily visualized. Whe…

The role of dacryocystography in the management of patients with epiphora.

A retrospective study has been carried out on 114 patients who have undergone dacryocystography (DCG) for epiphora, to assess the role of DCG in their management. It was found that 16/66 (24%) patients who were offered surgery after DCG refused it or were assessed as unfit for surgery, demonstrating the need for careful counselling and assessment of patients prior to investigation. The presence of lacrimal system obstruction on DCG was an important factor in determining whether a patient underwent lacrimal surgery. However, the actual level of the obstruction influenced neither the likelihood …
