INTRODUCTION: Aicardi syndrome (OMIM 304050) was first described in 1965. Its classic triad consists of infantile spasms, partial or total agenesis of the corpus callosum and ocular disorders, such as chorioretinal lacunae. It has been posited that it is due to a mechanism involving X-linked dominant inheritance.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a full-term female, with no pathological familial history or parental consanguinity, with a prenatal diagnosis of Dandy-Walker type malformation, who presented convulsions, coloboma of the optic nerve, thoracic vertebral block with presence of scoli

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a common pain in the orofacial region. Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a congenital malformation of the cerebellar and the fourth ventricle foramina atresia. Dandy-Walker syndrome is rarely found in patients with TN. This article presents a 36-year-old man with the symptoms of typical TN. His physical examination was entirely normal. An enhanced magnetic resonance imaging was taken. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the bilateral lateral ventricle, the fourth and third ventricle significantly enlarged with severe obstructive hydrocephalus, a huge posterior fossa c…

The Klippel-Feil deformity is a complex of osseous and visceral anomalies, which include low hairline, platybasia, fused cervical vertebrae with a short neck, and deafness. Associated central nervous system abnormalities include occipital cephalocele, Chiari I malformation, syrinx, microcephaly, and hydrocephalus. Herein, we report a case with Klippel-Feil syndrome and Dandy-Walker malformation.

We report a fetus affected by Meckel-Gruber syndrome whose phenotype was characterized by macrocephaly, frontal bossing, a saddle nose, marked micrognathia, a distended abdomen, omphalocele, post-axial polydactyly and talipes equinovarus. The main neuropathological finding at autopsy was in a very large cyst located in an abnormally wide posterior cranial fossa consistent with a Dandy-Walker anomaly. Intestinal malrotation, enlarged cystic dysplastic kidneys and hepatic portal fibrosis coexisted. The occurrence of a Dandy-Walker malformation in Meckel-Gruber syndrome confirms a disturbance in

It is rare for Dandy-Walker syndrome to occur together with occipital encephalocele. The authors present a case of Dandy-Walker syndrome together with occipital encephalocele.

We describe a five-month-old male infant with Coffin-Siris syndrome, the so-called Dandy-Walker variant (hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis with cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, but without enlargement of the posterior fossa), and partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. Dandy-Walker malformation and mega cisterna magna, but not Dandy-Walker variant, have been reported in Coffin-Siris syndrome. The presence of Dandy-Walker variant in the infant we described confirms that the full continuum of the Dandy-Walker complex can occur in Coffin-Siris syndrome. The yet unidentified gene(s) f

During the years 1950 to 1978, a total of 21 cases of Dandy-Walker syndrome were seen at the Vancouver General Hospital. Apart from hydrocephalus, the associated brain anomalies included agenesis of the corpus callosum in four cases, occipital meningocele in two and aqueductal stenosis in one patient. Systemic malformations were present in four patients and included two cases of cleft palate, one of polycystic kidneys and one of congenital rubella syndrome. The over-all mortality was 48 per cent, but has declined since 1965. Of the 12 cases treated surgically, only four have died. The number o…

A clinical analysis of 23 patients with Dandy-Walker malformation indicates that more than 85% of them were diagnosed at or before 1 year of age, and that the incidence of associated anomalies is approximately 50%, with a 17% incidence for agenesis of the corpus callosum. The significance of the presence of these anomalies is substantiated by the fact that of the seven deaths recorded, six were related to this disease and five were affected by associated anomalies. The high mortality rate (26%) is comparable to that of other series. The differential diagnosis with posterior fossa extra-axial c

The Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a rare posterior fossa malformation. The DWS can occur associated with other brain or systemic malformations, but ocular abnormalities in this disease are rare and clinical findings mimicking myasthenia gravis have not been described to date. We report a 23-year-old woman who presented mild limitation of the ocular movements with progressive palpebral ptosis, which changed in intensity during the day. The investigation showed negative anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody, repetitive nerve stimulation and "Tensilon test", but the brain magnetic resonance image…

Occipital cephaloceles in the Dandy-Walker syndrome are not rare. To date, 28 cases have been reported. We report on 8 cases of associated occipital meningocele, totalling 16% of all patients with the Dandy-Walker syndrome in our series. In all patients, communication existed between the posterior fossa cyst and the occipital meningocele. In 2 patients, the occipital meningocele disappeared after cerebrospinal fluid shunting and never required surgical repair. It appears that the cranial defect had ossified and resulted in self-closure. Poor intellectual development in persons with the Dandy-W…

In three cases an antenatal diagnosis of isolated Dandy-Walker cyst was made at 22-28 weeks of gestation by ultrasound examination. Biparietal growth and the relative severity of the anomaly remained constant, so that all cases could be safely delivered at term. Postnatally, the diagnosis was confirmed during the first days of life by ultrasound and computed tomography (CT). Early neonatal shunting procedures were performed. Dual shunts were inserted in all three cases, and mental and physical development were observed to be normal during a follow-up of from 1.5 to 4.5 years. Early antenatal d

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a rare congenital brain malformation defined by the presence of an expanded posterior fossa, full or partial absence of the cerebellar vermis, and a cystic expansion of the fourth ventricle. We report an 18-month-old girl with DWS presenting with atypical clinical manifestations and unusual symptoms. She initially presented with persistent vomiting and abdominal pain for four days, not responding to antiemetic medication. In addition, she was found to have abnormal postural arching of the back, extension of the lower limbs, and neck extension. MRI and CT head sug…

It has been very aptly quoted, "Variety is the spice of life"; and so variations exist in all forms and kinds good or bad, and for the worst or the best! Mother nature in all her glory and beauty has been very generous, but what when she fails to provide? It is this very character of nature that gives us variations which sometimes manifest in a cruel way on the human body and gives us the eponym of syndromes. Dandy-Walker malformation is an abnormality of the central nervous system, which leads to hydrocephalus and is associated with other abnormalities. Neurologic symptoms are the norm in aff

We report on two sibs with Dandy-Walker malformation and tetramelic postaxial polydactyly. We conclude that this is a new autosomal recessive syndrome.
