Modulation by sudden darkness of apomorphine-induced behavioral responses.

Sudden darkness increases motor activity and decreases anxiety. In the present study, we focused on the role of dopaminergic mechanisms involved in the effects of sudden darkness. The influence of sudden darkness on the behavioral effects of low (0.05 and 0.1 mg/kg) and high (0.25, 0.45 and 0.6 mg/kg) doses of apomorphine (APO) was tested. We assayed the effects of low APO doses on yawning-penile erection syndrome (YES; 0.05 and 0.1 mg/kg) and on motor activity (0.05 mg/kg), and the effects of high APO doses on motor activity (0.25 mg/kg) and stereotyped behavior (0.45 mg/kg and 0.6 mg/kg). Sp…

Into Darkness and Silence: What Caused Helen Keller's Deafblindness?

In 1882, at 19 months of age, Helen Keller developed a febrile illness that left her both deaf and blind. Historical biographies attribute the illness to rubella, scarlet fever, encephalitis, or meningitis. This analysis of her illness suggests she likely had bacterial meningitis, caused by Neisseria meningitidis or possibly Haemophilus influenzae.

Dermatoscopy of "dysplastic nevi": a beacon in diagnostic darkness.

The sequential progression model for melanocytic tumours from common nevus to malignant melanoma was proposed by Clark almost 30 years ago. The "dysplastic nevus" has frequently been considered a logical offspring of this concept and as a direct precursor of melanoma, analogous to the epithelial dysplasia-carcinoma sequence. Despite the use of modern molecular methods, there is no consensus as to if the dysplastic nevus represents a true precursor lesion of melanoma, a separate distinct type of nevus, or a diagnostic dilemma. Currently, the concept of melanocytic dysplasia remains subject to c

Shot in the dark.

A 43-year-old woman presented with decreased vision in the right eye associated with painful eye movements 10 days after receiving her first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine (Pfizer Inc, New York, NY). Two days later she developed painful loss of vision in the left eye. Clinical presentation and magnetic resonance imaging findings were consistent with bilateral optic perineuritis transitioning to optic neuritis. Extensive evaluation including aquaporin-4 immunoglobin G (IgG), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein IgG, and lumbar puncture was unrevealing. Visual

How dark is dark? A reflectance and scattering analysis of black materials.

Black materials play a critical role in applications such as image registration, camera calibration, stray light suppression, and visual des … hysically based rendering driven by the measured BRDFs and a psychophysical evaluation of perceived darkness. Together, these analyses provide a comprehensive assessment of black materials that links reflectance properties to visual appearance and perceptual performance, enabling informed material selection for optical applications.

Dark-EvGS: Event Camera as an Eye for Radiance Field in the Dark.

In low-light environments, conventional cameras often struggle to capture clear multi-view images of objects due to dynamic range limitations and motion blur caused by long exposure. Event cameras, with their high-dynamic range and high-speed properties, have the potential to mitigate these issues. Additionally, 3D Gaussian Splatting (GS) enables radiance field reconstruction, facilitating bright frame synthesis from multiple viewpoints in low-light conditions. However, naively using an event-assisted 3D GS approach still faced challenges because, in low lights, events are noisy, frames lack q

Light After Darkness: A Case Report of Isolated Optic Perineuritis.

This is a report on remarkable visual recovery from blindness in a case of isolated optic perineuritis (OPN). A 68-year-old Chinese lady presented with a two-week history of progressive painless bilateral vision loss. Her vision was 6/18 on the right eye and no perception of light (NPL) on the left eye with positive relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD). Fundus showed hyperaemic and swollen optic disc bilaterally. MRI of the brain and orbit revealed hyperintense periventricular white matter lesions, possibly early changes of multiple sclerosis (MS), and perineural enhancement of optic nerv

Melatonin and human reproduction: shedding light on the darkness hormone.

Melatonin, N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, is a molecule with diverse physiological functions. This neuro-hormone affects reproductive performance in a wide variety of species. In most animals, but not exclusively all, melatonin has an antigonadotrophic effect. The seasonal changes in the number of hours per day that melatonin is secreted mediate the temporal coupling of reproductive activity to seasonal changes in day-length. These observations stimulated a search for a role for the pineal gland and melatonin in human reproduction. Clinical experience related to this issue has yielded inconclus

Attentional demands of perception of passive self-motion in darkness.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether significant attentional resources are required to accurately monitor changes in bodily orientation, using vestibular information. This question was addressed firstly using a dual-task paradigm in which orientation perception tasks and a speeded auditory tone discrimination task were carried out either singly or in combination. For the active orientation perception task, subjects were seated in darkness on a motorised chair which could be rotated about an earth-vertical axis. Following passive angular displacements, subjects were required to re…

Policing hearts of darkness: aspects of the international sanitary conferences.

Internationalism became an important feature of medicine and medical science during the second half of the nineteenth century. Internationalism emerged in a climate of nationalism and the latter sometimes affected cooperation, especially after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, and the increased imperialism of the last third of the century. Against this backdrop, the International Sanitary Conferences, beginning with the first one in Paris in 1851, attempted to provide guidelines to control the spread of disease, especially cholera and plague. Quarantine was seen as a central feature of disea
